To be honest, Heroes of the Storm has better balance and hero design
I can't quite figure out why I am still compelled to keep playing this instead though
some special quality I can't describe I suppose

Heroes of the Storm is alright, but it doesn't reward your good gameplay as much as League does. Kind of annoying.

What? Samuro had like a 75% winrate for months.
And kerrigan also has had a absurdly high win rate for close to a year.
I do like specialists though and wish Lol could invent crazy random characters without people complaining.
EDIT: lol samuro is still #1 least he's down to 54% now

win rate really isn't a very good indicator of balance
If you pick a Champion an auto win 3 of 4 games - that's no sign of sore balance? OK.

could just as well be a sign that the opponents don't know how to fight your champion
ecks dee
It's REALLY not hard to balance a ame without Runes, Masteries, Summoners AND ITEMS! All they have to do is balancing out the max. 2-3 viable Skill-paths (that mostly don't have HUGE impact) as well as the Champions Base-Stats.
That's not hard to do.
Actually the fact HotS STILL has some outliners is quite funny.
Maybe if you think Tic Tac Toe is better than chess.
heros of the storm is a discrace to mobas as a whole and don't say good hero design when there are multiple heros that have the same abilitys with different names on them. there are so many other reasons I could rant on about why hots cant even be considered a moba but im too lazy to do that
heroes is better than league in the aspect that the maps are interesting and there are more objectives, i like some hero designs too

So... what was the point of this post?
I'll start off with Hero design, since that'll be the easiest to tackle. Heroes of the Storm doesn't have better Hero design, it has safer Hero design. Most of the Heroes' kits are already preconceived, and just need to get some stuff picked out to be put into a kit.
Varian? Just use Warrior abilities from World of Warcraft. Jaina? Frost mage stuff. Basically any Nephalem from Diablo? (Nazeebo, Valla, Sonya, Li-Ming, Johanna) literally just pull abilities from the games their classes show up in.
I suppose I can say they have "better Hero design" for the fact that a lot of their Heroes are already really well-liked (god bless Malthael), but holistically, they're nothing new, and I think a design should kind of lose points for pulling from other works. (which is kinda the whole point of Heroes of the Storm, but, still.)
But, now, to talk about balance: Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends, as MOBAs, are highly PVP oriented. As with anything, these sorts of things have to be meticulously balanced so that nothing dominates play and ruins things for everyone. Blizzard, with all respect due to them, does not have a reputation for good PVP balance. (in fact, they have a reputation for PVP in World of Warcraft being implemented as an after-thought.)
Reputations aside, Blizzard actually has a lot more of a chaotic, scattered sense of "balance" than Riot has. If the Heroes of the Storm tagline "Heroes defy" holds any meaning (which it does), then it also comes with the obvious discord of breaking rules and setting new ones, which inevitably results in balance problems.
To try and name a few; Varian (Fury builds with inane amounts of lifesteal), The Lost Vikings (Erik can go invisible and just camp an objective point forever and stall it out), Chromie (high damage artillery mage/Assassin who gets her Talents 1 level earlier) - but those are just to name a few.
While Blizzard may have some decent enough balance on their part, constant rule-breaking is only bound to constantly upset game balance as they go along with it. And that isn't to say that League of Legends is the picture of balance for everything to be held to, either - but more to say that it's a game whose mission statement won't cause them long-term problems.
League of Legends does have some balance issues of its own, some of which are glaringly difficult to work around (untargetability, invisibility/camouflage, high mobility, lifesteal, etc.), and while not perfect, they do their best to work around it all. And in having an item system, ability levels, and several other factors in place, they do have an impressive workload.
And, of course, there's more than just Champion/character specific stuff in terms of balance, there's map-related stuff, too. (Mercenary Camps/Jungle Camps, Bosses, Tower AI, etc.) - I'd love to go into much better detail with this all, but I'm already starting to work up a migraine, so I'm just gonna wrap this up.
Heroes of the Storm holistically has easier balance, but not better balance, than League of Legends, and also easier Hero design. But, in the same respects, Heroes of the Storm does some things right that League of Legends doesn't - and vice versa.
Personally, I take to League of Legends (PVP) for gratifying play, and Heroes of the Storm (Co-op Vs. AI) for relaxation and to blow off steam.
