It's pretty easy to predict.

  • Are squishy champions in range of the immobile burst mage?
  • Are they close together so the stun will hit both of them?
  • Does Annie have the damage to quickly kill them?

She's probably going to ult you.

Annie's counterplay lies in the fact that she is immobile and short-ranged. Many mid-laners can poke her down without allowing her to retaliate and she can't reliably initiation fights unless she successfully flanks you or has Flash up. Typically, Annie will counter-engage or follow-up on her team's initiation.

Don't face-check bushes if you don't know where the enemy team is or ward sufficiently so that you don't risk it?

Alternatively, have the tank lead and slightly apart when the enemy has an AoE CC to initiation with?

Counterplay isn't always based on abilities or items. In many situations, the counterplay is to use your judgement to make the correct decisions or to adjust your play-style to accommodate for the abilities of the enemy team.
