I know old champs are a problem and it's impossible to balance when half the cast is playing as if this was still old school DotA.
I believe the issue is a two front problem in that summoner's rift needs to be redesigned as well.
Riot seems to be in the state of wanting to have its cake and it eat it too. They want to have a hyper fast paced arena fighter like smite, Battlerite or even comparatively to Overwatch while trying to still some how make it about Objects instead of just killing each other.
I think Heros of the Storm is a good game mostly because it does eliminate most of the problems with most MMOBAs, slow paced, farming, items, and other mechanics that make people fall behind. The reason why I see people just hate it is because it's so objective focus that teamwork valued over the individual. One thing I noticed when I do play DotA2 is that the whole 1v1 mentality doesn't really exist there or it's not as noticeable. League seems to insist upon it self that combat is the be all win all and that you have to "git gud." The problem with that is that it implies that counters shouldn't exist. like champions who whole kit design is to deny another champ. Many champs are designed to say no to others or to win by playing a numbers game which is what late game carries do. They just scale so great that there is fuck all you can do.
League sometimes wants to pretend to be a fighting game where we are counting frames then likes to say now this is actually a game of convulated rock, paper, scissors. You argue all MMOBAs are like this but League keeps moving more and more to skill shots and this counter play philosophy. While also trying to make supports that are damage focused. Which is fine and all but it's like if you look at Akali it would seem her damage would come from her passive and it's about resetting it. Instead it's just a utility tool to get into position to burst people. I would like to have fun running around using her passive because it's more fun but she just dies too easily or your opponent dies to fully realize the fighting game style she triea to emulate.
