Riot, brushing off the boards complaints is not a good idea.

KnifeCat··185 votes·22,205 views

The majority of current “complaints” are not the same ole “boards complain bout anything” complaints. this is different. Back in previous seasons, “complaining” was someone raging about something that was OP, raging about the flavor of the month.

However, since s8, the majority of the boards have complained about the STATE OF THE GAME. Sure maybe in the past there was a complaint here or there about game state, but for the most part, that’s not what people complained about. So Rito brushing these complaints off as “usual boards complaints” is a bad idea, because the majority of complaints are voicing their opinion on major game state issues, such as damage creep and snowballing. This is not people just raging about the flavor of the month. People are not having fun. This has been going on for the entirety of season 8. The game has changed too much for the worse, and with no signs of getting better, and people are getting pissed off. Brushing it off as the “same ole boards complaints” is very foolish.

But this isn't Reddit, Rioters don't even come here anymore.

Why would they be on the official League of Legends site, come on! Get your act together!

Although in all seriousness, I do completely agree. Players are people who play the game no matter what site or form of communication they're using. The fact that Boards can so easily go completely ignored to basically promote a different site is mind blowing to me.

Eedat10 votes

How is it mind blowing? The amount of LoL players that visit the main Reddit absolutely dwarfs this board. Why is it such a surprise that this board isn't listened to as much when it's just common sense?

Marshbouy4 votes

Because people are angry and salty about how riot "ruined" the boards years ago or something.

Vhan876514 votes

I understand going to where the larger crowd is, especially when realistically you're not going to put too much of a dent into the people who prefer Reddit over Boards. What blows my mind though is why any company, not even Riot specifically, would completely abandon their own site to all be on a different one. There is so much information on the League site that tons of players end up completely unaware of solely because they never use the League website. Even something so little as knowing there are some Rioters who browse Boards and make it feel like what playerbase is here have some degree of a voice at least would be captivating enough to bring some life back to Boards and maybe give it a bit more credibility. Ultimately you're never going to pull the people who use Reddit away from Reddit, but at the same time too I don't understand Riot not promoting their site at all or even give players a reason to be here.

An advert for a AMA/Q&A for the Aatrox rework, advertised on this forum for Reddit. Why no just have it here?

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

Why not have it on Reddit? It has a big, just as big, or even bigger audience as the boards does. The people on Reddit are no more or less of a player than us on the boards. There shouldn't be any inherent bonus (As in, X site will always get more stuff) to choosing one site or another, things will be posted wherever people think they'll do the best. AMA's have typically always been done on Reddit, Meddler's Balance discussions are on the boards.

Is it ideal? I don't know, I think it's fine, but it's nowhere near 'completely abandon their own site' when plenty of discussions and red posts are still seen here daily. It's hyperbole to the extreme.

Jaspers4 votes

Not everyone has a Reddit account. Everyone (who plays league and are therefore interested in the this AMA) has a League account and can log into this website. I understand why they do it but it seems odd that you come here to download the game, register, for support, news on patches etc but when it comes to discussing things, off to Reddit you go. I know it's not as extreme as that but my post was more of an example of how something that could have easily been done here it shipped off to Reddit for some reason.

It's not like Riot get a cut of Reddit's ad revenues.... or maybe they do. Hmm.

They do. But it's usually on the Dev official discussion page rather than Gameplay/General discussion. It takes a pretty strong referral from a board moderator for them to come HERE specifically, and that's healthy, because 95% of it's utter garbage posts with biased opinions, not real facts.

If you go on the lol korean forum there isn't a single complaint about the status of the game in the first 10 pages ... but there are like 10-20 post about the Garen border.

So since this is no more a western game but a fan service MOBA for the Asian playerbase they think they are doing fine.

just look above you ... a good chunk of the EUW players write here in the NA board :/ .... The OT is from OCE btw.

Fact is that EU//OCE Boards rarely recive any answer or attention from the most influential Rioters, and this lead lots of us here on the NA board.

Back in 2016 the count of red post was like 1 for EUW every 10 in NA ... and the EUW ones where generally related to Supports and Bugs

It wasn't really dying back than, it was just unbalanced, but it wasn't really so off balance that people were jumping ship, but now it's gotten so unbalanced that it's not like people are leaving because they're unhappy with their champs, it's because their champs have become unplayable. This meta is so cookie cutter that if you play anything outside the meta you'll get absolutely destroyed. Which makes this game not fun at all.

League of Legeneds .. #1 PC game .... not much else to say.

3TWarrior2 votes

realistically, when a game has to attract NEW players, it is in its most unstable state

when league was young, it was at a point where its population started to explode

now, we're seeing the opposite and the company is trying desperately to attract new players instead of keeping the interest of the old players

name one game that hasn't snowballed downhill when the company makes too many mistakes

look at command and conquer, a franchise that used to be TOP OF THE WORLD...it has only a few thousand players left if that and most of them are eastern

starcraft, the game that started to dethrone CnC, shared a similar fate and starcraft 2 with its everything online must protect copyrite yada yada..who knows how many players are on it

every time I try to enjoy a genre I enjoy in SC2, I quit because local AI is purchase-only and online AI is worthless to a player on satellite internet

Jaghatai3 votes

You're really not thinking through your own argument there. OF COURSE A GAME WANTS NEW PLAYERS. That's how you keep growing and maintaining your market. Trying to attract new players isn't a sign of weakness at all. It's a sign of normal marketing.

Should all sales of Settlers of Catan be suspended because that company should "rely on its core audience?" NO of course not. You need to keep selling, you need to create new fans and new player.

That's like saying Disney should just rely on all kids born in the 50's to keep their theme parks and movies afloat. That Disney should keep making cartoons and movies for a 50's audience. NO! You always need to be acting to attract a new generation of fans as your previous fans grow up. "Snow White" is a very different movie than "Aladdin" which is very different than "CoCo" or "Moana" - things evolve and you update with the times for new audiences. Should Disney have stopped changing and updating their look and feel and writing since the 90's were so amazing for them? No, that hurt the company when they ended flopping several movies in a row because they weren't adapting.

EA repackages evergreen products like Madden Football every year to attract gasp new players.

DE regularly checks their new player experience to continue to attract new players to Warframe.

Command and Conquer is an awful example. Westwood studios sold out to EA. EA cannibalized that company. Further C&C was NEVER the powerhouse that League is. C&C failed because they didn't ship Tiberium Sun for 4 years, despite advertising it in the ending of the first game. Why did that happen?! Originally it was supposed to be a voxel engine game, but a little thing called Quake 1 happened that completely rewrote the gaming landscape and how we made games. Suddenly, they were reconsidering what engine the game should be made in and it took them 4 years to replace it. When the game was finally released it, it played like a game that would have been good in 1996 not 1999. That is what killed C&C. Red Alert did well for itself as a franchise and Generals did OK as well. But Westwood had to sell off to EA in 1998 because they failed to release C&C 2 and we all know what that means. Star Craft had nothing to do with the demise of C&C.

Ghostcrawler video :

random guy Don't you think item 2047 is really OP in ARAM and makes Shaco Teemo completely useless, so if you rolled them the game turns into a 4v5 or even 3v5 if you get both in your team ?

Ghostcrawler answer : Aside of Shaco and Teemo that hardly impacts them, I don't think it's an issue.

This really shows the new mental state of the game. They only care about the current "popular champions", and leave the other ones in the gutter. This answer infuriated me, because negating 2 champions to actually nerf others is really stupid. Take a look at Lissandra in her current state, she has no passive. Yasuo has 2 passives but directly got numerous buffs because he's popular and item 3031 actually made it make sense and have his passive meaning something, not having 100% crit and the same damage as any crit user with 2 items.

Ghostcrawler answer : Aside of Shaco and Teemo that hardly impacts them, I don't think it's an issue.

he couldnt say the truth, because that might have offended people who play these champions.

those two champions would be worse than aids if oracles didnt exist. you have the option of either making them automatically win every game in the most cancerous way possible, by making it impossible for the enemy team to advance even if they should win a fight, or to make them a bit weak, if their opponents buy oracles. id take the second option aswell.

its not like summoners rift, where these traps are already anoying enough, but you can avoid trapped up areas. on the howling abyss without oracles, you literally have no option but to constantly walk into them.

sinZsoul4 votes

So I want to start off by saying league is a popular game. For everyone who has one thought, another person might have another thought.

About teemo and shaco. I personally hate teemo, so my answer is definitely biased. However, having said that, losing to teemo shrooms in Aram is one of the worst feelings I can have in league. I'm sure there's a lot of people who agree with me on that one. It's just cancer to play against and a good teemo versus an enemy team that doesn't know what oracle's is will win at a very high percentage. Even with oracle's, I've seen good teemos top damage charts over and over and bad ones do like second or third most. Shaco is not as cancerous to play against (for me), but he's still a really strong champion in any case also at the high end of the damage charts. There's plenty of champs that don't do well in aram compared to those two. In fact, if anything I think most people want teemo to be nerfed more.

Lissandra I'm not going to comment on because I don't know when you wrote this comment. I also haven't looked up her reworked passive. I will say her old passive allowed her to shove Lane harder in the early game to try and get a lead, but yea it was pretty useless otherwise.

I hate yasuo and I always ban him. That being said, he's still at an under 50% win rate so I mean... I actually would agree his win rate should be even lower than what it is right now, but taking in the fact that it was historically a lot lower for a super long period of time, I'm willing to let yasuo players enjoy the game a little. I understand you might not share my feeling, but I would encourage you to try normal draft instead of blind. I used to hate normal draft, but riot has done a good job of updating it and I actually like it better than blind now. Just realized I assumed you were doing blind. If you're not banning yas,I really encourage you to ban him. A good yas will carry the game if it gets to a certain point and there's little counterplay.

I mean sure, some players feel that way, but no one has the actual numbers of how all players feel. No one has actual verified numbers that prove anything. Not to take away from your opinion, which you're entitled to have.

I also think that they have a lot at stake if players are actually leaving in droves. It's in their best interest to identify and address those reasons and react accordingly.

Yet it's not always beneficial to engage every single post on these boards. First of a it's not plausible. Secondly, if you already feel the way you do, aka you are convinced, what could Riot say to assuage you?

The best bet is for Riot to continue working towards whatever goal they've identified and monitor the result.

It seems to me they do exactly that.

I think it's foolish that a majority of posters on this board expect a immediate response to their complaint followed by a patch that contains their fix.

I think it's good that players post their grievances here and I hope they keep it up. But have realistic expectations.

No company anywhere can just change their process on a whim. It takes time, planning, etcetera.

Keep in mind this board represents a small portion of the player base too.

I for one am having fun, I have no plans on rage quitting the game.

In fact, I'll state something very crazy, I'd be happy if they kept the current meta if they can (and that's coming in season 9) fix the match making and ranked queues. I'm not sure I'll be happy, but I'm eager to see. And I'm confident they'll continue to tweak it over time.

You may not like this meta and that's fine, but it isn't (in my opinion) broken. There isn't any champ you can play right now that gurantees a win.

Best we can do is embrace and learn the meta, adjust our play accordingly and keep communicating to Riot.

But don't come off all arrogant and make demands and claims that you couldn't yourself implment, or back up with actual evidence.

the difference is that people just complained about who was the strongest in the meta, all we really complained about was mages were too strong, mid was too influential, bruisers were too strong, assassins were too strong, ezreal and yi are abusing X item intended for junglers/mages etc

now it's that there's very few things to not complain about, the game is just a giant fiesta, allowing "every champion to go everywhere" which really just means making everything that counters assassins and juggernauts too weak to oppose them, really makes the game feel unoriginal and bad

then you have the fact that we've taken the strategy out majorly in favor of dueling mechanics and snowballing early leads, so the only games you can play scaling champions in are in fucking silver elo...just sucks

the games are more fun when they last about 10 minutes longer, so people who play early game champs have to actually have macro skills to close early, and people who play scaling champions have to fight that win condition, and you had siege comps as well, rotate comps, split push comps, now it's whoever wins the most lanes(top counts as honestly up to 3 lanes being won) and teamfights the best / gets the only baron anyone gets because 5 minutes is WAY TOO FUCKING LONG - wins the game
