You know who plays like a tactician? Gangplank

Catastrophic··69 votes·2,673 views

Swain rework is on the way, and rito said they want to dive into his "Master Tactician" theme. And I was thinking about it, and Gangplank really plays like a tactician. His management of his barrels and their cooldowns and placements, how he sets up traps and barrels around him before a fight, and how he can outplay multiple opponents using trickery and tactics to proc multiple barrels or Trial by fire procs. Just some showerthoughts. Discuss

No. Riot said that for now he supposed to be tactician but is Drain Mage BUT also said they want to dive into his "Noxus leader" theme. So the tactician is put away

I do hope they go for a tactician theme in another champion though. A champion focused on pre-planned combat rather than moment-to-moment decisions sounds quite fun.

It sounds fun until the moment you realize you're playing a team game and your allies can and will ruin all of your carefully laid-out plans in an instant for no reason. And then flame you for it.

I say keep Swain as a Demon-Bird drain tanking monstrosity. He even says it himself, "If we approach strategically from the flank, we can.... Oh who am I kidding, let's just morph and eat them!"

Votable Jester1 votes

You could make that into more of a split-push type champion, but I think it could work even in chaotic teamfight situations.

Also I specifically said that they should make a different champion sometime with a tactician theme in mind.

Dataless1 votes

I didn't catch that, thanks for the clarification friend.

Like illaoi and heimer?

Nymzo9 votes

Not really, both of them are more ''set-up'' and ''come fight me in my safe zone if you dare'' champions.

3lo Booster4 votes

That's the tactic. Like standing on highground

Nymzo9 votes

Don't try it

But that's not planning ahead, especially Illaoi who needs to ult in an instant to get her set-up.

Hell, Heimer 90% of time will place his ult turret DURING the fight, that's not planning ahead either.

3lo Booster1 votes

Only strategical masterminds will put heimers ult down DURING THE FIGHT because they whittled down enemy cds with masterful planning sometimes a full minute ahead.

EternalFrostFire1 votes

I guess you could argue Syndra with not much CDR is a tactician if she wants to pull off a large number of sphere'd ult. She will only have a window of a few seconds to ult with lots of spheres before it dies down again. She has to predict when she will need her ult the most and ramp up spheres while using her W accordingly. And there's the ball positioning, but the ball positioning is kinda easy and not really setting things up, most of the time its just placing them down and doing something to them.

There's also Azir, who kinda but not really plays like a tactician through managing his cooldowns carefully.

not necessarily put away, just not the focus. likely put away though

Play GP for ten games.

Then you're allowed to talk out your ass when it comes to belittling GP's tactical play.

Tails90161 votes

Ten? try 2, should be enough assuming he survives laning phase both times

Nymzo13 votes

That's a weird way to say Abathur.

Direct combat, not recommanded.

Abathur is a HoTs character who relys on buffing his teammates and spawning minions. He just sits in base spawning a special parasite over a teammate, from there he has spikes to shoot and a heal/shield for them. He also passivly spawns minions that soak exp from the lane he's in (in HoTs theres team level, which is how you get stronger) and spawn mines to defend his body while he's looking elsewhere. His ultimate then creates a clone of a teammate or a siege monster, (with the right upgrades its a fucking beast, healing tons and pushing like crazy). Very tactical champion.

ArbiterOfTruth2 votes

Psst he knows who Abathur is. "Unclear" is just one of his quotes.

Also well-timed oranges, all-range ults (sometimes that boost movespeed) and having both melee and ranged boosts to seamlessly weave between the two as he needs. Yeah, he does pretty well for himself, doesn't he?

Tactician? Coward is the word you are looking for!

Gangplank doesn't run, He just searches for different opponents!

You forgot Mister Teeto and his strategic placement of fungi

how is it 'tactical' to instantly ignore 40% armour, blow up barrels instantly, and full lethality build 1 shot someone with q.

where is the tactic to cleansing ALL forms of cc with a fucking orange.

I would just like to say, I would totally read/watch a series called "Showerthoughts with James Borne." I imagine it being mildly profound and vaguely sexy.

Crow placement. Place crows and activate them later to hunt down and slay enemies. Ult remains unchanged for the most part. Bam. Tactician, and still a drain mage.

Catastrophic1 votes

I think that idea has potential, it seems micro-management is the theme

Yep.

But here's what Riot will do. That isn't fancy sounding enough, so instead they'll put 2-3 minigames into his kit and call it a great success as everybody laments the loss of Swain, because simple=/= good obviously.

Serika Zero1 votes

This is why all reworks are going to fail and piss off champion mains. Even if they are in relative small numer. They choose to recreate focusing on lore. But the reason anyone plays a certain champion over 50 games is either because its fucking broken/op or they enjoy the play style it offers

And every single rework, the ones that get fucked up the most are the people that invested the most time and put most passion in playing with that hero. Its so sad that its hilarious.

ShadowParker2 votes

Why the hate? What VGU's do you hate?

Serika Zero1 votes

all, all of the champions that i've tried to main and got rework no longer have any itzy bit of similar gameplay in them as they used to meanwhile, the overwhelming majority is hyped about it, says its amazing

but after a few months, they start crying op and unhealthy once more

Azteryz2 votes

answer his question, which champion are you referring to when you say none of their pre existing gameplay doesnt transfer over post rework?

Galio. Urgot. Sion kind of (The only thing from his old kit is the shield right?) Poppy, etc

JaxMoonStealer4 votes

Because Sion, Poppy and Urgot were so healthy and fun lol.

I'll give you Galio though.

Azteryz1 votes

galio still has a tornado, his ult is basically on his w not, he is an even better anti mage

sion was a disaster pre rework and they still kept his w and made him an actual undead warrior and not some front jawed Arnold schwarzenegger wannabe

poppy still kept her charge stun and made her q and w more interactive and fuck her old ult and if you only played old poppy because of her ult then fuck you too

seriously tho you cant say that these champs have nothing similar at all to them it makes no sense instead of having a 0.0001% play rate they have 100 times more and are in a better place now

50000000000000002 votes

Poppy can still go in, tank a shit ton of damage, and also output a ton of damage, depending on how you build her and how ahead she is.

Serika Zero1 votes

take your time and read the first word in my reply to him. read it again and again and again until you finally figure it out ;)

and don't you dare make the unhealthy argument. EVERYTHING in this can IS unhealthy or toxic. Mainly because everything in this game can either get you killed or deny you the kills you want. Hence, the 'healthy' argument is biased as fuck.

Meanwhile, the 'playstyle' argument is not. And its also the one area riot is NOT interested when doing reworks. Which, once more, pisses off champion mains. ALL OF THEM

Azteryz1 votes

coming from someone who used women as an analogy for this

and i think you're forgetting what the point of a rework is

yes mains will be upset that their messed up kits on their favorite champions are now fixed but understand that there wasnt a lot of mains to begin with because of their messed/unhealthy prior kits

and playstyle doesnt mean anything because intially you had a problem because they didnt have skills that they didnt have anything from pre-rework which is just not true

Serika Zero1 votes

play style means everything, its about the feeling you get and its different............ with the reworks, totally different

and the more you invested into that hero the more betrayed you will feel

Maddened King 1 votes

I'm really fucking hoping that his rework has him maintaining Curses and DoT's like an Aff lock. Getting the most uptime on multiple targets by refreshing them. God that would be my favorite champion in the game if they can get that rolling.

EternalFrostFire1 votes

Ahem Brand, except he doesn't really refresh his DoTs, he just applies them again, over each other.

... No, not Brand. Brand is not about applying dots to people, it is about getting 3 stack passive with an AOE combo and causing explosions. Not even close to the theme I want.
