Riot, make grade public and have be available IN THE GAME (for lvl30 normals only)
By giving the most accurate measure of one's performance on a per game basis available to everyone, you can see how you stack up at a given point in the game and see who is performing poorly. No, a Jinx going 2/3/4 is VERY different from a Lucian going 2/3/4. Champions peek at different times in the game, and knowing more concretely and explicitly how people are performing I believe is necessary because of my theory:
Being able to see how much you are contributing to the team will reduce toxicity. My theory is based on the fact that no one brags about their points or scores in TF2 and more importantly, no one beats down on people for being DFL on the score board. In fact, the only thing a few people will brag about is the KDR they have which they have to calculate and look up because the game almost hides it, and that's few and far between.
I do not believe it's by random chance; there's a policy or system at work that stems the desire to divide people into castes like we do or DotA2 does or WoW ranked pvp does, and I believe that system is publicizing an accurate measure of your contribution to the team.
Why I think this reduces toxicity:
-
Humans feel poor performance more strongly than good performance. It's just a fact of psychology. We concentrate on the bad so we can avoid it. So we will remember that throw we had at tribush even though nothing really came of it and 3 minutes prior was us destroying the enemy. Being able to more explicitly measure what happened will mitigate our overestimation of how royally we or someone else fucked up.
-
Even if you have a bad game, knowing that people are worse than you is actually a bit of an uplift. Every racer in collegiate sports will always take losing hard, but as long as they didn't come in DFL, they're still ok about it.
-
So let's say you are that poor shmuck who did come in DFL. Well first of all, you can't lie to yourself you did alright because your gold was 100 gold high or you had somewhat better position or (God forbid) you had a better KDR. You can't ignore it and are forced to process it. Knowing you did poorly is the first step not only to avoiding tilt but also _ getting off_ tilt. When you're on tilt, you get mad because you just know you can do something. You're better than this. If it wasn't for XYZ, you'd be able to destroy this little bitch. But you can't, because you did poorly and your performance later is affected by your performance now. Once you identify you are on tilt, you can take a break. You didn't lose because of someone else. People don't go on tilt because of an AFK. People go on tilt because they unconsciously refuse to accept the consequences of their own actions. Therefore, it will be much easier to leave a losing streak instead of trudging on unhappy and on tilt.
-
But finally, because it's live, you're not set in stone. Yes, you fucked up and now you have a D-, but you pulled off that awesome play and are now sitting at a B. You know how awesome that feels? That's a great way to get picked up again and get back to being focused.
Why I believe people won't belittle others:
-
The new system kicks in and bans/restricts people extremely quickly. End of story.
-
Despite what people may think, teams lose together in this game. If you're belittling someone for doing extremely poorly, your grade is also suffering because you also performed poorly. What, you thought it's not your responsibility to help a struggling teammate? That it's actually possible to get an S+ or higher than a B if your team is doing poorly grade-wise? You're just shooting yourself in the foot. You can't hide behind some statistic you see like gold or wards placed or kills or deaths. That grade is there, and it's how you performed compared to the rest of the server and it's much more meaningful than any other single statistic.
-
The grade system actually has the potential to be a better reinforcement/punishment than the honor system. We want that coveted S+. It's something about as tangible but with a live grade much more immediate than a win or LP gains. The temporal proximity of actions to reinforcement or punishment will allow players to more unconsciously gauge what actions are being reinforced and punished even by a mechanical standard and not behavioral. However, when players start trash talking and their grade immediately starts to waver or stop increasing how they expect, they will notice this. Trash talk itself does not mean you are bad, but it indirectly affects your own performance by affecting your mental state as well as just locking out your control over your character. This negative reinforcement of taking away a good grade will not fly under the radar so long as the grade is EASILY visible at ANY point in the game and NOT hidden.
Now, I am human, I could be 100% wrong on this. That is why I would ask Riot for some preliminary internal testing and then BETA test this on NORMALS at lvl 30 ONLY. If it's bad, scrap it. If it's good, keep it and then apply it to ranked later.
