% damage reduction on tanky champions?

For example: Garen.

Let's say he built: item 3047 item 3143 item 3065 item 3071 (Which is a plausible build for him) At level 18, with stacked W, this gives him a total of 3249 HP, 199 Armor, and 138 MR (ignoring the active part of W)

Then he adds item 3046; its 12% damage reduction, added to this build, equals roughly 167 extra Armor and 95 extra MR (if it stacks additively with resists) or 41 extra Armor and 32 extra MR (if it stacks multiplicatively)

This means that when dueling someone, in addition to speed and offensive stats, in the worst case scenario Garen gets item 3193 's stats for free, while in the best case scenario he gets 4 times more of those.

Now, my question is: has anyone actually tried building item 3046 (or item 3812 or even binding another tank with item 3109 ) on a tanky champion? Does it work or is there an aspect I missed?

P.S. DrMundo and Sion would probably make a better use of item 3046 , but I didn't consider them at first and I'm too lazy to re-do the math for them :p

not too sure what it is you are asking o.O it sounds like you are saying tanks are too tanky, but armor and MR stops being nearly as useful lategame. I could have 80% AD reduction through armor on garen for example, and still get shredded by vayne, draven, or really any adc that can crit and kite half way decently.

The big issue is that it's much harder for A garen to utilize that shit. He has no in-combat sustain from his kit, his E does aoe so only 33% from deaths dance, and he needs to get into melee range to use it, so the 30%bleed will not help him alot, it even hurts him by delaying his passive for an aditional 3 sec. And for PD, he has some Crit scaleing, but next to no AS synergie, and he once again needs to get into melee range first to applie the debuff, while his main issue is getting kited to death. So DD has anti synergie with him and PD has not a great effect either.

You certainly can make some melees work with that shit, but the big question is: **Why bother? ** Ranged champs with that setup have a higher payoff and worke more reliable. A darius could get pretty hard to kill with a built like that and a dedicated support, but his damage will still be lower than that of an adc and he be less reliable at applying it due to beeing a low mobillity melee. You basically run a greater risk for a lower reward.
