Why I believe MMR exists, and why I believe it is a negative.

This is a topic I have avoided because too many players use it as an excuse why they are not in challenger and why their teammates are monkeys or something. But I feel I can address this in a civil manner.

I've been trying to figure out why MMR even exists. If I am drastically better or worse than the people I am playing with why not allow me to slingshot myself up/down? Why limit me with an arbitrary system that matches me vs people better or worse than me just to slow down my climb/descent? Shouldn't I just play people in my tier, and if not available for queue health closest to my tier? Then I figured it out...

Grinding = game time = better game statistics = more money. If people could slingshot to their respective tier by playing well some would just quit for the season in ranked and just hover for the sake of safety and no necessity for climbing(this could be countered with more ranked decay). But! If you slow them down an give them an even win rate, you make sure it takes them all year to get where they belong, thus like time gates in an MMO, Riot uses MMR to 'extend' the duration of ranked content so you don't 'beat the game' to fast.

To me that seems like a bad thing. If we play better just let us rise, if we play worse just let us fall. Add more ranked decay in all tiers to counter hovering. Match us vs people in our tier. This would reduce the number of people propped up by their team mates and crappy MMR and those who fall because they are matched against harder enemies will be able to rise to their deserved rank.

For me personally, this wouldn't make me play rank less, it would make my rank climb feel more valid and I would play it more.

I'm not going to propose a specific design solution, I am not going to say whether LP changing based on MMR should stay or not. But I certainly should not be forced to play against better people, with worse people on my team, just to time gate my climb and slow it down. I don't know exactly what system should be for LoL ranked, and I do know they try to compensate you for your MMR with LP gains and losses. But I still think the system is bad and should be replaced with something more transparent, simple and fair.

Disclaimer: Oh and I intentionally posted this while on a winning spree with a high win rate in ranked as both my main champion and overall. So don't even try saying this is a rage post because I lost a game, it isn't.

It doesn't slow down your ascent. If you have high MMR for your division, you will receive drastically more LP for a win than you lose for a loss. Even holding a 50% winrate at this higher MMR will catapult you through the ranks

Except it does, if I am winning 70-80% of games vs S2 people, or 50% vs G1 people, the small increase in LP per win is not drastic enough to account for that.

You're assuming there is a massive difference between S2 and G5 lol. There isn't nearly enough of a difference that the same player would experience 70% winrate in S2 but only 50% in G5. Thats not the case.

It took me ~60 games to climb from S5 to G5 last year with a 67% win rate. I was playing against platinums in S2. It didn't slow me down even a little.

It will until you get close to g1, where it will slow down because that appears to be the true elo of the player in the example.

I'd like to just go against people of my tier. That'd be nice.

ELO always has been the real ranked system since Riot released the game.

The league system is only there purely so that babies don't have to worry about losing their precious silver and dropping to bronze. It's just the shiny coating that you get to see and for the most part means little.

Not sure why people are downvoting you when this is 100% correct - before the division system was introduced in season 3 to combat "ladder anxiety" the hidden number that we today call MMR was what our rank was. ___________________________________- Poll: Do you run Flash on D or F?

Riot needs to choose one or the other. That's really what it comes down to.

Welcome to human society, where we advocate and enable greed, and then complain about said greed. ^^

I sure do love it.

I feel like MMR punishes you for only being a little better, but rewards you super fucking hard if you are significantly better. It makes smurfing easier, but at the same time, it makes smurfs ruining games a lot less because their MMR will be rocking highrolls and shit and they'll get placed with significantly better people really quickly. On the other hand, good f*cking luck cimbling if your winrate isn't above ~54% (With normal MMR).

LoL rank system is kinda shit, im not a very good player im currently silver 4 with 2 lp (FeelsSilverMan) and i rather be able to drop to bronze 5 then sit through so many games to just reach one tier higher.

i cant really pin point it but it feels so unrevarding to climb and takes time with the promotion games adding stress and being being on edge from being in promos and then you still lose LP and oh boy here we go again chopping iron with a wooden axe.

if i lose a lot and i drop down to silver 5 or bronze 1 thats fine i can alsways climb back up, but it sucks because it takes such a long time and i dont have that much time to play.

(i might just be shit, and my opinion is just that) [zombie-nunu-bummed]
