why do tanks get less damage despite not buying armor.

MunchCrunchLunch··1 votes·726 views

the logic of the game says if you have armor or MR damage from AD or AP is reduced. but tanks just naturally seem to get less damage from those despite buying no armor. let me give you an example. a lvl 1 teemo will take WAY more damage than a level 1 garen from the same hit despite their starting armors are not that much different. am sure there is stuff under the hood but why isn't that in the numbers that we see

if you don't trust me go please try it out for yourself. just don't buy any items. no masteries. and go take a turret hit with a tank and a squishy and then tell me am wrong

There are factors such as raw HP to take into account, along damage reduction from abilities, runes, masteries, defensive stat growths, and so on.

There's no big secret to it, just numbers.

Are you taking runes, masteries, and starting items into account?

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

i noticed all this throughout the game. and I tried it myself different champs take different damage and i don't use any defense masteries. and really? starting items?

Probably the main thing you need to take into account is what runes they are running. Whenever I am playing a tank champ I go straight armor and magic resist. That on top of the current 4-8% damage reduction keystone mastery.

Your health has a lot to do with it.

I don't know the numbers off the top of my head but I believe teemo has around 550 hp lvl 1 while garen is close to 900.

No champion comes even close to 900 hp at level 1 even with runes you high af dude!

what crack where you smoking because i'd love to have it. garen starting health is around 600. 616 to be exact

garens base health is 616 + 84.25/lvl

@op: first of all, garen is not a tank.

second, at least after the changes he tends to pick defensive masteries, that grant a lot of health, and sustain bonuses where teemo would take offensive masteries.

garen is melee, while teemo is ranged. auto attack range is one of the stats with the largest impact in the game. he can constantly poke at garen and auto attack from a safe distance without having to get into garens threat range.

that alone warrants a lot higher base defensive stats on garen than teemo. he needs some way to deal with the constant free poke hes eating. and if he ever manages to get in range he needs to be able to hit teemo hard enough for it to count.

additionally, melee champs get scaling mr per level, while most ranged champs dont. the reason is, that melees usually have to sit in the front lines and get into the middle of the enemy team to be effective. as such, theyre taking a lot of poke and area of attack damage while theyre shielding your ass that hides behind them.

ranged champs usually have a lot more freedom when it comes to chosing a position from where they can be effective. they can sit in a spot where they dont take any damage whatsoever and still shred an opponent to pieces, while that garen has to sit in that kennen ult to fight the adc and his support.

Because some champions are meant for specific roles. You're not suppose to go Assassin Garen, or Tanky Varus.

yeah exactly i get that but why is the information not tangible. can I get some numbers.

The numbers are right on the goddamn HUD in front of your face! What do you want here?!

You can find all the stats on champions online on wiki's and whatnot.

I think its in your head because tanks will usually get and hp/resists item first and their kit has defensive abilities in it. As an example garens w gives him resists and %reduced damage when activated.

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

no no no. there is something called the tab button that I look into and see what people bought

Wolfram Oxford1 votes

I was pointing out that these champions are naturally tanky with their abilities, and then the items they buy are good against both magic and physical damage...

I will make a video about this to show yall. I can't believe i noticed this and veterans dont

Masteries and base stats make up a huuuuuge difference at level 1.

Tanks do have more armor and they have more health. Individually those two difference may not seem much, but the two stats interact making the result more noticeable.

Also the difference between 20 and 25 armor is bigger than the difference between 120 and 125, so a little difference in base values actually means a lot.

Also a lot of tanks (Garen being one) have abbilities that increase defense or reduce damage. That's why they are Tanks.

No, there isn't. Armor and MR are the only things that reduce damage unless there is a champion specific ability (like if Garen activates his W for temporary damage reduction). If one champion is taking less damage than another, it's all due to resistances.

Tanks aren't getting any kind of extra stat bonus over other champions. They take damage according to the armor/MR formula just like everyone else. The only difference is that a tank might have the 4% damage resistance mastery.
