Amount of ARAM accounts keeps growing

Dr Poro··81 votes·7,506 views

If you have a high MMR in ARAM (you can check this site https://euw.whatismymmr.com/dr%20poro ), you have likely encountered many ARAM accounts. These are people who make a new account just for ARAM and only buy the strongest champions to maximize their chances of getting an OP champion. A second problem with ARAM is that people dodge whenever they get a bad champion or team comp because they expect their opponents to have at least 3 OP champs.

Results? You'll keep seeing the same champions over and over in a game mode that is supposed to be ALL RANDOM

How to fix it? ARAM accounts: Use the entire champion pool to pick a champ from. This also allows you to trade with anyone in your team without requiring eachothers champs. It also allows people to get to learn champions in a faster environment than Summoner's Rift where you're stuck for 20+ minutes if you're doing poorly. Dodging: Increase the penalty for dodging in ARAM. Preferably use a mode-specific restriction, for example a 1 day or 1 week restriction from ARAM games when you dodge repetitively (not for first time/occasional dodges).

Here's a poll. It's not mine but it has a big sample size already: http://www.pvpdatabase.com/?p=1253

I have an aram account. I welcome this idea and I really hope riot will finally implement it. Also I think both games should have all champions unlocked also.

honestly ive been playing with the thought of making one too as long as riot refuses to aknowledge the problem.

i dont have to keep dodging when i roll sub par champions for that mode just because i have to assume the enemy team has multiple aram accounts.

As much as I hate ARAM accounts, I've felt the same temptation (haven't given in yet, though). As for dodging, I never do that. I think it's even worse than an ARAM account because it's not only anti-fun, it also wastes time for 9 others.

These two updates have to come out simultaniously, if you only fix one, the other problem will only be stimulated.

I once heard a suggestion for dodging that I thought was absolutely brilliant and solves most of the issues of dodging in aram.

If you dodge, the game saves the champ you dodged with and you're guaranteed to get it next time you queue. (Unless ofc someone else also has the same champion saved in which case it's randomly given to one of you)

Suddenly, the biggest and most common reason for dodging in aram is removed.

The problem falls down to this... if someone like you has an ARAM only account and you have access to all the champs... then why do you buy a champ?

Still need to pay for skins and need to own the champ to have the skins too, so there is that. I guess most people pay for the skins over champs anyway so that wouldn't be a huge drop really.

Edit: I am referring to people that play ARAM only. Not sure what I was thinking when I typed that out but it came out very wrong from what I meant. A player that only plays ARAM just because that's the game they like would have no need to ever buy a champion.

If riot did this I would no longer use an aram account. My main has 96 champions and is sub-par for aram due to aram accounts. Unlocking all Champs for aram would not affect any sales. People would still buy them for skins and chests and stuff.

I hate that people still think "Well I don't want to play certain champs so I shouldn't have to." is a valid excuse to argue against unlocking the entire champion pool. The idea of ARAM being RANDOM is that you get a RANDOM champion (crazy, right?). When something is random, do you really think that it should be biased towards a person's personal opinions? Do you really believe that a random gamemode is only fun when it's just pseudo-random and working in your favor?

The whole point of Riot giving us re-rolls is so that we can get rid of champions that we don't want to play BUT they don't always work out. Maybe you rr twice and still get someone you don't enjoy. You know what you should do then?

LIVE WITH IT

I can personally guarantee that playing a champion you don't like WILL NOT KILL YOU. It's not the end of the world, and I can't honestly understand why people treat it like it is. Suck it up and play something different instead of saying "Well I only enjoy long-ranged poke champs so I can never ever play anything else."

As a side note, dodging more than twice in a row should absolutely be punished. Maybe you had a real reason the first two times, but three or more means you're abusing the system and honestly shouldn't be allowed to play for AT LEAST a day, if not more. /end rant

Considering that there's a specific number of champs you have to own in order to play a Draft Mode (16 because it's 6 bans and 10 picks, you can't have 0 champions to play with), random is still random. It's not like you can buy one champion and then enjoy 0 randomness on ARAM. This is still a random draft for you but with just a smaller number of champions to pool from.

It doesn't mean everyone has to be subjected to the same random number of champions, especially when Riot made sure everyone can enjoy Hextech Crafting. So for the people who have a small champion pool and keep randoming someone outside of it, they will never get the chests.

Hollow Miracles7 votes

I sincerely hope you're not telling me a random choice from a pool of 26 champions is the same as a random choice from a pool of 75+. I get that there is still a "random" element to it but when an ARAM account's choices are limited to characters ranging from "strong" to "overpowered" while the rest of us pick from most (if not all) of the bunch, it simply isn't fair in any capacity.

Don't get me wrong, I realize that there a lot of accounts that simply don't have all the champions unlocked, mine being one of them. When you refuse to spend RP on unlocking champions, it takes a while to make your way through the entire roster. The thing is, I fully intend to purchase all champions at some point. I'm not there yet, just like a lot of others, but I will get there. Those who use ARAM accounts are in the same boat but DO NOT intend on purchasing any champions that aren't considered powerful in ARAM.

This is where we find the main problem: how can we distinguish between ARAM accounts and those that simply haven't played enough to unlock all champions? The answer is actually very simple: we don't. Give everybody equal treatment by unlocking everything for them, and you'll get very close to leveling the playing field. At that point the two biggest factors contributing to a win/loss are luck and skill, the only two things that any ARAM match should have ever depended on.

As for the hextech chests, is that really a problem? ARAM isn't meant to be a place where you can learn a champion in-depth and master their mechanics. The knowledge one gains from playing a champion in ARAM is basic at best, which means that only those who already possessed mastery will ever really have a chance at getting chests consistently. If you want chests, you shouldn't be playing ARAM.

Sorry for the long post btw >.< This topic is a big thing for me considering I play ARAM over normals 99% of the time.

Elikain1 votes

Considering that the community has been giving a hefty amount of flack to Riot for not having the mastery on ARAM as well as on SR from the moment of release, i think it's a big deal to take away hextech chests so that you can "balance" the playing field this way.

The thing is, when i argued that mastery scores shouldn't be allowed on ARAM because i don't consider that mode where you can actually get the mastery the right way (by playing your intended pick and on a lane), people downvoted me. Now i'm arguing that you shouldn't balance the mode if that means screwing over the people who don't have specific ARAM accounts and i'm still getting downvoted.

I believe there should be ARAM balance to prevent these specific accounts to always play their preferred picks but definitely not on the expense of the majority of players who are in the same position with their champion pools but don't intend to become ARAM accounts.

Hollow Miracles2 votes

I honestly believe that champion mastery shouldn't have been implemented in ARAM simply because you cannot master a champion in that mode. I've gotten champions that I would have never played otherwise many many times and done decently with them but I am by no means a master at them, nor do I believe that I deserve any sort of mastery with them. I think that people only asked for mastery implementation on ARAM because they wanted to farm chests/keys in a faster-paced gamemode. This especially benefits those with ARAM accounts because they can, for the most part, only play with the select few champs they own, thereby greatly increasing their chances of getting chests after a game.

For other players in the same small champion pool situation, hextech chests are NOT unobtainable. There is still the chance that they get a champion they own out of the entire roster. Assuming that these accounts plan on continuing to purchase champions, they will eventually reach the point where they own most of them and can obtain chests very easily. This also severely reduce the chances that an account with very few champions (ARAM only) would be less likely to obtain rewards.

I don't want to punish those just starting out but for those who do not intend to have ARAM accounts, the punishment is temporary. As they rise through the levels (and ranks, later on) they'll amass a large number of champions to pull from, resulting in more opportunities for chests and variation in the way ARAM is played. Unless you can think of a way to single out ARAM accounts and stop the game itself from favoring them in matches, this would be a necessary evil. Think of it like this: the more experience/play-time you gain in the game, the better your chances for reward become. Sounds perfectly logical to me.

Elikain1 votes

I am definitely in the boat of still not caring about ARAM mastery problem. I don't play it for the chests, i play it for the keys. However, the problem with people with small champion pools that aren't ARAM accounts is even more screwed up because the chances are relatively small to get something you own and then on top of it, to earn at least an S-. They are not unobtainable for sure but they are close to unobtainable.

You're also assuming that everyone is striving for a whole champion roster. I do not. I own 26 at the moment and my account is not ARAM account. I am happy with what i have and once i consider to branch out or try new things, maybe it will happen. But 26 champions are more than enough to fill the roles i play all the time and even a few on the off roles i would probably want to try in the future. I still have champions i did not even try and i bought because they were at some point, interesting to me.

It just seems half-assed to fix a problem by opening the entire champion pool and then create a problem of hard earned chests because you can't get a champion you own. Which would force people to buy more champions and then accuse Riot of "forcing them to spend money on content for the sole purpose of earning free content". It isn't right to sacrifice the plebs in such a manner so that you can fix a problem of ARAM accounts. People don't like to be thrown under a buss for someone else's problem.

This is the same problem of "smurfs ruin games". Smurfs aren't toxic to League. People who abuse them to circumvent their punishments on their mains and people who intentionally troll or throw games are the problem. ARAM accounts as well as these kinds of smurfs are the problem and implementing the solution everyone is suggesting in the first place on both problems (the logical and easiest of them all), would completely screw over the majority of people who don't abuse the game in this manner.

Hollow Miracles2 votes

There are two things here that I disagree with. They're semi-related so I'll do my best to make them both clear (also keep in mind that we've begun to stray into the realm of opinion rather than objective truths, so this is just my personal stance).

Number One: The fact that people think ARAM should be played for mastery or anything hextech-related. While I understand that it may be a convenient way to gain chests/keys, it should definitely not be based on this principle. Chests and keys should be something you occasionally earn on ARAM as a side-effect of playing well with a champion you happen to own. They should not be expected, nor should they be the goal of those who play it. The gamemode wasn't designed with the hextech system in mind and it really shouldn't cater to it now that such a system exists. It's called "All Random All Mid", not "Hextech Grind" or "Easy Keys and Chests".

Number Two: People would not be FORCED to buy more champions, especially with money. Forced would imply that playing ARAM would require a large champion pool to earn chests/keys, which it wouldn't be. If you want a higher chance of earning those rewards and intend on playing a lot of ARAM, then you buy more champions. If you're comfortable with your pool and don't want to buy more champions atm, then you accept the fact that you will have a lower chance to earn those rewards. If you want a higher chance of earning hextech items (but refuse to buy more champions for whatever reason) then you can play normals, where luck is taken out of the equation and skill becomes the sole determining factor. Also, I've bought every single champion I own with IP alone, and I see no reason why others can't do the same. They would not be forced to spend money, that is a choice all their own.

Point #1 is the big one here. It's not "throwing people under the bus", it's telling them "Listen. You can keep your current roster and lower your chances of winning loot items in ARAM (normals are always available), or you can buy more champions to increase the odds while playing ARAM." Normals have been and should continue to be the prime, reliable source of keys and chests. ARAM is just an extra gamemode that happens to have implemented the system for questionable reasons.

Did you even read the whole thread? I already said that dodging is a serious problem and needs to be punished more severely. It already happens more frequently than in SR while in SR most dodges are by accident (forgetting to pick/ban). Why? Because there's nearly no punishment. Not even if you do it 10 times in a row.

Sohleks2 votes

Holy shezba cool website.

I'm a 2147 aram elo all champion owner

While I imagine owning an aram account and dodging would give an edge, they are pretty beatable. Honestly Riot has done a good job making sure most of the champions in the game can be viable there (playable, but not equal). What honestly matters more is the composition of your team (I roll and trade to improve the teamcomp). With every champion I almost never run out of rerolls before I get something workable.

While waveclear and tower defense is essentially important (just like on SR), Riot has curved away a lot of the exp/gold advantage from an early lead. I think teamfight composition and scaling is ultimately the most important predictor of taking the nexus, especially now with the latest changes. Tank stack is definitely the strongest thing; however most aram accounts are poke and support stacked lel. (tanks being broken if they don't have to lane is an underlying issue with itemization in general)

Most aram account players are easy prey too lel. Mechanically they are boosted.

FillyPhlyerz2 votes

Also, I feel like unlocking the entire pool is smart for Riot on a financial level (though I may be wrong as I have no numbers in front of me to prove so). By unlocking the entire pool, there's a higher chance a player will play a champ they've never played before and, with that, a high chance that a player will find a new champion that they like and want to purchase. Not every purchase will come in the form of RP but I'm sure plenty will.

Basically, it will encourage and inspire players to broaden their owned champion pool for SR.

1000angrybees2 votes

I'd say unlock all of them, sure. But allot more rerolls and give a somewhat higher percentage of rolling a champ you own than one you don't. That way, you're more likely to get someone you like than a champ you don't even remotely want to play.

Don't ruin everyone's fun because there's a couple of bad eggs in the carton.

DreamerP2 votes

The funniest thing about all this is that Riot actually tried to "BALANCE" Thresh and Nasus in ARAM...like of all the things to have done to "Balance" anything you choose these champs...why not balance the map itself first and open the champ pool to allow all champs to be put into the RNG

ABSINTHEged2 votes

Aram is more fun when you're playing with random comps but still playing champions you actually know how to play.

There's a hard balance when trying to create an, "ARAM only," account because the fewer champions you own the more likely to are to get the free week champions which are often. God awful. It kind of balances out in this way.

Small pool aram only accounts tent to fall off pretty hard around 1500-1600 MMR (as calculated by kassad.in) because they really only get you so far. Aram is about knowing how to adapt your build and strategies to fit your moronic comp. It turns out most people aren't actually very good at this, and most real ARAMers tend to separate out from casual aram players fairly quickly.

Always remember:

Tanks win ARAMs. Snowball OP. Catalyst is God tier.

Caítlyn1 votes

This is just sour grapes. Why wouldnt dedicated ARAM players make an acc for it?

Dr Poro4 votes

I think it's okay to make an account for something you're dedicated to like a Mordekaiser main account that plays only one champ. (Although a Rioter stated that smurfs do more harm than good and they'd prefer to see less smurfs).

However, in ARAM it is different. The account doesn't only show their dedication, it also gives them an advantage over a maxed out account (an account with all champions). I think that a situation where "oh boy, you ruined your account, better make a new one if you want to compete in this game mode" shouldn't exist in LoL where winning or losing depends on your decisions ingame and during champion select, where everyone has an even chance (after a minimal runes/champion investment which can be done with ip by the time you reach 30). I dislike it that my 5 years old account is weaker than a 1 month old account in ARAM, one of my favourite game modes.

The Yetii Rider2 votes

Source on the Riot smurf comment? I believe you but I want to read the whole statement in context.

Sohleks2 votes

There's this though. I betchya not all aram accounts are malicious sleezy "I'm gonna make a seperate new account rigged with all zee best random champions (IMO)." I betchya some are just casual league of legends players that never ended up attached to summoner's rift and just play aram and kinda end up accidentally setting their account up with the good picks.

Anyways. Sadly. Riot probably doesn't want to "make aram harder to get into", and alienate their aram account playerbase playing the game maybe even buying skins on two accounts =\ ~ and doesn't want to complicate the level 6 aram experience with the limited free week pool. New players have to learn what enemy champions even do though and as a league player since 2011 I can hardly even imagine this anymore. Still. These are not great reasons perhaps.

Maybe Riot could make it all champions are unlocked in level 30 aram

GaleWinUnleashed7 votes

Dedication is fine. Great, in fact. But in this case it's going against the spirit of the game mode, which is intended to be a random pile of champions thrown together to see what happens. ARAM is supposed to be a somewhat silly game mode that's more light-hearted than Classic mode, but many players are taking it seriously. As I mentioned before, taking it seriously is perfectly fine, but it can be done while also keeping things fun for everyone involved.

Fllesh1 votes

sooo, out of curiosity, how many champions do you think are OP in aram... there are a LOT of champions, and i for one would say a ton of champs are op in aram....

Dr Poro3 votes

While there are many good champions, like sejuani or amumu, they are only good if they have a balanced team comp. You don't need any specific thing in ARAM except for ranged waveclear. Without this, you will get stomped hard in the early game. Another really important thing is poke damage. The funny thing is that these 2 things are usually together on the same champs. Champions who excel at this are OP Xerath Lux Varus Jayce Galio Zyra Jhin . Then there are a few other champs that are just too good in other stuff: Alistar with his heals and insane engage, cc and immunity and Sona with her insane heals and team auras (she's like Soraka, but more).

I wouldn't dare to make a cut off for what is OP and what is not because it's all on a scale. The ones I mentioned are safe to say OP, they're just at the top. Then you have a list of about 30ish champs that are really good. ARAM accounts will have these champs too to diminish the chance of getting free weeks. The bad champs are usually bruisers and tanks that don't have AOE hard CC. There are a ton of these champs, about half the champion pool which makes it so favourable to have an account without any of these (it's not bad to have one bruiser if you have the safe waveclear in your team, but it's REALLY bad to have 3 and your opponent has 4 poke/waveclear champs).

Fllesh1 votes

well... i would make an argument that at least 30+ champs are op on aram but u seem to agree with that idea already... so i will say what is an aram acct? i dont own 30 champs on a lot of accounts because of the price of runes and champs... so u could say they were all aram accts... but they are not....

i totally know what you are getting at, but i think the problem lies with riot... or with the aram "random champ generator" if you prefer... not with the champs people play with.... i like support, mid, and top.... most of the champs in those roles i like are longer range magic users.... this would make them good aram champs....

and this is not even considering peoples play styles... tanks dominate aram with the snowball if they dont die early for no reason... use the towers... play safe and boring for a while and u stack resist.... but then... people dont like to do that often in aram, they just want damage, even against 1 type damage comps... u will still not see people build resist....

people dive nonstop in aram.... they play "for fun" which normally means they dive some more....or as a reason for them having 18 deaths.... thats not a comp problem, thats someone not playing the champ well problem, going in 2v5, taking kills and not letting anyone get assist gold.... aram is still a team game and people forget that i think....

now, all that being said, yes... when the enemy team has a great long range poke comp, with tower siege it can be a horrible stomp if you have only melee on your team..... but there is a lot more to aram than just the champions.... and it does not happen as often as all that...

its just an easy excuse

Dr Poro4 votes

You're giving arguments why OP champs would falsely seem OP in low MMR. All those mistakes are typical for >1500 MMR games. However, the problem is the greatest at higher MMR where everyone plays very well. Snowballs are easily dodged and the suffocating pressure that poke/waveclear comps have is extremely hard to beat. In lower MMR it's less disastrous because a lot of players will be too greedy and ALL-IN with their poke champs, destroying their slow but undeniably deadly poke spam.

An ARAM account doesn't have just the 10 best champs. Because they would have 50% chance to get a free week champ, of which likely half of them would be bad. They generally own around 50 champs. The 50 strongest ones. A few top tier tanks, a lot of mages and ADCs, top tier supports and assassins and voila.

You shouldn't feel bad for coincidentally have a lot of good champs for ARAM. The system favors you, but you didn't abuse it. On the other hand, one is to pity those that prefer bruisers and other melee champions without AOE. They will have a pool full of bad champs in this mode. Perhaps this type of players is less attracted to ARAM because of their preferences, perhaps because of their bad pool. Personally, I prefer bruisers in SR but when I play ARAM, I certainly love a Xerath (which I would NEVER pick in the big and open map of SR because I suck there with squishies that are easily ganked)

You forgot Zilean. If ever there was a completely retard-proof champion for ARAM, it's that asshole.

I think there are a lot of A tier champs in ARAM, but there are about 10-15 S-tiers (Lux, Xerath, Nidalee, etc... you've seen them, probably banned them in poro king if you played it).

Most ARAM only accounts will have all the S tiers that they know how to play unlocked as well as A tiers that they like and nothing else, meaning that while I have a chance to get champs that are maybe B tier (who are decent, but not broken/amazing, maybe because they can't abuse mark/dash), an ARAM only account will always have a more favorable pick than me.

The flipside is that I accrue rerolls much faster, but since I'm still more likely to roll a garbo champ since I own everything, I'm at an innate disadvantage at all times.
