Is this Really Such A Noob Thing?

I get alot of heat sometimes for playing who i like instead of who is good. A couple months back I had a support tell me i should uninstall because i didnt want to play Tristana. When I said Tristana was no fun for me the support continued to flame me and said it was my fault we lost, even though i did fine in lane.

Is it really so bad to play only the champions you like? I have been doing exactly that since i started playing league.

Play what you want, but know that other people may not like your selfish pick and it could set the tone for your entire game.

I would suggest you inform them that even though "XXXX" Champion is currently op you are not proficient with them like you are with "XXXX" Champion and pick what you enjoy. If they persist then tell them that their best chance to win with you on their team is for you to play your best / better champions.

If reason does not work, then dodge or mute the offenders and continue on your way. There are those that are so competitive that you picking non currently op champions is " trolling " and will cause them to counter troll with a pick they suck at.

Example would be you picking Graves and the person that is complaining picking Urgot Olaf Yorick . If they are complaining about your less than optimal pick and then pick one of these, DODGE. These types of people are only going to pick something that is perceived to be op, so non meta picks are a clear sign of troll inc..

EvilRabbitt6 votes

I do non meta picks all the time, but never to troll. Case in point, Jungle Jinx and Support Yasuo and Support Ahri. I pick these because I'm good at them and love their playstyle, and they fulfill their roles. Jinx has hard cc for ganks (traps and slow are more than enough along with across map executes), Yasuo wind wall is a straight up negate for ADC v ADC and gives you advantage, and Ahri has a pull that scales with time and increases damage dealt to target by 20%. =) Must fight for my friends and I that do non meta things like Team Yordle.

I am a Mordekaiser main. Just those in general are incredibly hard to come by. However, I do not play him mid, I play him on top due to several reasons. Amazingly, I have yet to have anyone really rage at me for taking More top, even when the top 3 top laners were Renek, Shyv, and Mundo.

I am actually somewhat surprised to see that no one has really raged at me for picking him AND sending him top. The only time they do is if I end up having a bad game with him.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

Cuz Morde really does do best top. I've also found him to be quite the jungler as well. Not many ganks but near infinite sustain without any spellvamp. With the Stalker smite you can probly pull ganks off.

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

I'm a Mordekaiser main, and I find him much better mid. Mid champs are usually squishy, and generally assassins now. He can insta-burst them, and completely nullify their "burst".

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

Mordekaiser is extremely gank susceptable though. Thus why he generally doesn't fare well in the mid lane where ganks are the most common in occurence. Top lane is much safer. Still gank susceptable as hell, but safer. He is good as a counterpick to a few champs in mid though regardless of his gank susceptability and is overall great in lane should the jungler not gank at all.

ShemsuHor1 votes

Agree with your first two sections but Graves is phenomenal and has some of the highest burst and mobility in the game. A good urgot cant lose lane. Look up Latrom if you think olaf is only a troll pick. Yorick is basically the same as urgot SO hard to lose lane.

Speaking as a Support main, allow me to apologize on behalf of all supports everywhere. That's just incredibly lame of him.

As long as you're playing a champ in a role that works for them, and you can actually play them well, I don't care who you pick. I've had ADCTeemo Teemos and won handily before.

Which champ were you using as ADC?

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

(Another support main.) Yeah, I'd much rather have you play someone you're good at and have fun with, and I have a big enough stable of champs that I can play well with whoever you pick. Between Sona Blitzcrank Braum Nami Thresh there should be someone that synergizes well with your pick.

Delioth5 votes

Psh why are you limiting the support role? The support's job is to make advantages for the team- if you kill the enemy laners over and over, you and your adc have a handy advantage- Tryndamere Darius Ryze Udyr are actually pretty good in a support role; you just have to realize that it's not the champion that makes a support, it's the playstyle. All of these guys have enough damage (or threat of damage) to give your adc free farm by scaring off the other laners- and when they engage they've got the damage and enough CC to just kill them. When you get used to some of them (Darius and Tryndamere) you can just pick off the support and get a free kill (especially if they go with Sona/Nami/any squishy support)

Quoting this for attention, as people need to realize that breaking the meta with good thinking and careful planning can be very strong. Darius support is something I did as a joke with a friend (Darius Draven lane), and we crushed three games in a row. The threat of the pull and sheer damage of that lane caused many lanes to just starve to death.

DeynaTaggerung1 votes

The key point is "good thinking and careful planning". That kind of a pick can be good if it synergizes well and the opponents are caught off guard. However in generally if you look at what Darius can bring to not only the lane but to a teamfight as opposed to say Leona you'll see a stark contrast. The cc, shielding, healing is incredibly crucial to a successful 5v5 as elo goes up.This is why playing supports who were made with that job in mind is still a good idea most of the time. To show I'm not entirely against you though I'll say Anivia and Vayne is just waaay too cool.

Tsunday1 votes

Actually Anivia is a classified support. It's just plain disrespectful to say that you support people using supports that aren't classified supports like Leona is, and then pick another secondary support listed under the same standard as Leona is for supporting and then say 'see I support lanes with supports that aren't really supports'

DeynaTaggerung1 votes

But she's non-meta. And in any case that was just a shout-out to an awesome lane duo that shows the idea of a unique combo.

Tsunday1 votes

I'm honestly glad she's not meta. Annie 'support' wasn't scary but Anivia support :'(

DeynaTaggerung1 votes

The question is scary for her adc or her enemies? :P Which really depends on who's the person playing her.

Tsunday8 votes

While when I play ADC I don't care who my support plays, those are not supports because of their playstyle. A support isn't meant to feed an adc they sit there in lane to protect them because ADCs have a weak early game and the supports can't really do their job until team fights. The support's playstyle is that of A control mage or sometimes a cc tank when the team has a lot of built in sustain. Their playstyle is meant to balance their allies and enemies. They flow the control of the battlefield not by dealing tons of damage but by restricting their enemies through CC and saving their allies with sustain. Their playstyle is that of a tactician. They have to make the strongest enemies more susceptible to damage as well as the allies best in position more equipped (with damage buffs) to dish out the damage.

The champions you listed can very well give your team an advantage as a kill lane botlane. But when it comes to the team fight stage they don't get the control of the battlefield that a support does. They can do damage, they can create picks, but in personally believe there is nothing more rewarding than to hit a Janna ult that both heals and saves a dying ally, and separates an enemy carry from their team.

You can play whatever support you want in lane but you cannot claim that those champions fit the support playstyle if they do not encompass the support's team fight duties.

i think you just said the same thing as AlexZandria just using different words

Tsunday1 votes

Your first 2 paragraphs are EXACTLY what I said. Your last paragraph is just wrong. The support's job is never to be the assassin. You have a midlane to carry, an ADC to carry, you might be a bursty support, but it is not your job to assassinate anything. It is your job to peel and allow your teammates to do damage. Disrupter, control mage, tank, utility bruiser, bodyguard, utility mage. Not assassinate.

The person above me claimed that Tryndamere and Darius were supports because they could feed their ADC. I told them that wasn't a support's job. Because like you said it isn't

shalexade2 votes

I got to gold maining support Syndra.

I assassinated the living heck out of the other team. :D

Tsunday1 votes

Syndra is classified as a support by Riot for her surplus in utility. I told you I consider a utility mage a support, I've played Syndra support before. Honestly when I play Syndra support the difference is how I use her ult. I go R > E to nuke a priority target and then to stun the whole enemy team, whereas if I was playing her midlane I'd not be going for an AoE stun and instead save my E for a guaranteed second kill.

I also believe Syndra is only a support if you buy Frost Queen (or Talisman, your choice) and a sightstone. Otherwise she might be a support in lane but she becomes a second APC in teamfights. That's what I hated about Annie support. They'd always get mad in all chat that their ADCs KSd them and I'd say 'you're the support you don't have to get all the kills' and then 15 minutes later they'd one shot you and be like 'lololol you just got killed by the SUPPORT' and I'm just like 'bro, sorc boots, dcap, void staff, and chalice do not make you a support you're building APC'. With mage supports like Karma and Orianna I used to love building them Sightstone, Dcap, Crucible (if they were mana hungry) and then a mixture of Banner, Ohm, Twin Shadows, Frost Queen. They were all items with decent AP for my damage, and then supportive actives for my team. It always allowed me to be helpful as the 'supportive' champion on the team while allowing me to play my character as a mage.

I was so excited when Ardent Censor came out because Banner + Ohm + Ardent on Karma pretty much meant if you could get to their towers with your Mantra E up then it was instantly gone. I personally believe Riot nerfed Mage Supports who actually played their champions as supports by turning away from AP items with supportive actives and turning them into tank items. I don't want to build support Syndra with health and armor. I want to build her with AP and still be the support.

shalexade1 votes

Sight stone kills your power spike because early game, you are buying health- and investing in wards for the next 20 minutes. I much prefer to buy them as needs be, rather than pay for 20 minutes worth upfront.

Same as frost queen- there's simply no need to go that far up the tree. Frostfang alone gives you the cash, upgrading it just offers a little more utility (which you are fine without).

Add in a chalice, and you can spam Q's in lane til the sun comes down. Which winds up quite profitable with the Frostfang.

Pick up a death grasp and take their carry out of fights, before picking up a Rylais and turning every 3-second-Q into an AOE slow.

Above all else however, know how to play your champ, and play them well- and you'll do fine.

Tsunday1 votes

SIghtstone isn't gold efficient if you don't place enough wards and it's a waste of money to buy wards all game if you're going to get a sightstone. I think it really depends on your position when you leave lane. Sometimes as support I first item a chalice and if I have 1600 or more I get a needlessly on a lot of my supports, but you're in a 2v2 lane. Never underestimate the importance of a little extra hp when you are getting harass from 2 sources for the first 20 minutes.

THANK YOU. I've tried playing Teemo bot lane and I get told to go back to playing bots and stop being a retard. At least someone supports bot lane Teemo.

Tsunday1 votes

Find somebody to duo Donger support for you and get him to first item Abyssal since it's a double AP lane. My friend and I did this for a while, and they see one of us lock in and get ragey and then they see the other one of us lock in and they're like 'well the enemy botlane is screwed'

jinxedchef8 votes

I never mind "less than optimal picks" as ADC. And by that I mean ADCs who are not top 3 or whatever. However, straight troll picks are frustrating, like if you played ADC Ryze or such. Only you have to remember that just doing good in lane is not what a ADC needs to do. An ADC is in the game to do massive "deeps" later in the game. So while I have seen ADC Teemo, Kennen, Jayce, even Thresh do well in lane, but once team fighting starts your team is gimped and may not be able to win. To me ADC is the only position that has to be filled in almost every game. You can have a AD champ mid, can run 2v1 top, or other non meta things, but without an ADC you really have to crush the other team's ADC to hope to win.

DeynaTaggerung6 votes

No, noobs are the people who can only do well when they're playing op champs. Get good on a more midrange pick and you'll do better as well as enjoy yourself a whole lot, more which is important because..I hate to state the obvious but.....it's a game -.-

My husband loves to play Quinn, but never gets to because people threaten to dodge or AFK. It's sad because he sucks as ADC UNLESS he plays Quinn; yet, somehow, he's the noob for wanting to play her. I sometimes get people harassing me for picking Alistar... Yes, ALISTAR! (I guess Bronze players think Alistar is a horrible support...)

All you can do is tell them you are better with "BLA BLA CHAMPION". You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. You can explain things to a noob, but you can't make them understand. Play who you want, ignore other players, and do your best. Just report when the game is over. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this... It's really annoying when people judge your picks.

It's not that they are bronze. Alistar isn't too great as a support except with a few ADC's (Lucian/Jinx being the best ones imo). With no poke and weak sustain you're needing an all-in duo and he's going to be really weak as a tank mid-game because of the low gold on supports.

For Quinn, he should maybe switch to top lane with her. I've seen some really good Quinn's top lane and if you have the right sup/jungle you can own even later in the game. Just she's not a hypercarry and that seems to be what folks want nowadays. I do love being in game with a good Tristana/Vayne, but I'd rather have Lucian or Corki if being on the hypercarry means they are going to suck.

Ali support depend on the support match-up, not on the champ you are paired with(unless your mate has a very low damage ADC like Ashe/Sivir, in which case Ali is probably going to be bad regardless And also, Lucian is not one of the best lane partners for Ali, imho. You would not be able to follow his moves as he has so much mobility that you will not capable to stay close to him to disengage if enemies sucessfully engage 2 vs 1 vs him. And they'll likely try to counter Lucian with someone with long range, which means that you as Ali will have more trouble to reach them to unleash your combo when walking in the bushes withoput suffering too much damage

Tsunday1 votes

Honestly I like seeing Alistars. Nobody really plays him and the ones who do tend to be pretty good with him. I pretty much only play Cait, Ashe, and MF adc and even if I'm someone like Ashe (and I'm an Ashe who starts E and Avarice for the gold Advantage normally) I still tend to win lane really hard with an Ali's help. If he builds his runes/masteries right though he should have no problem with gold income.

Play whoever you want, but that doesn't mean your teammates are wrong. They're wrong in flaming you, but the jist of what they're saying is true.

Sure, you might not like playing Tristana when she's OP. But you can't deny that in a close game, if you were to play Tristana (and you weren't complete shit with her) that you would of won the game as opposed to an Ezreal or Sivir. You can and will consistently win more games by picking stronger champions if you can play them close to the level of your "worse picks".

I'm sure you can jungle Jinx or support Ahri at a decent level. If you were to play jungle Lee/Panth or support Nami/Janna at an equal or even slightly less level than those champions, your team would have a better chance of winning just based on your picks. Whether you agree or not, the champions not only fulfil, but they excel at that role. Teemo can jungle, but he's not a jungler. You can have a 70% win rate with Teemo jungle, that doesn't mean it's a good or viable pick. And it certainly doesn't mean he's as good or better than a Warwick jungle.

If you're as good or even slightly worse at the meta picks than you are with the "troll" picks, you will see more success in your play. Not to mention you wont throw your team on tilt by your uncommon picks.

Now, I'm not saying don't play Ahri support because she isn't a meta pick. Play whoever you want, have fun. What I am saying is that if winning is your priority, you'll put yourself in the best situation to win and that if you're picking uncommon champions, whether you agree with your teammates or not, it is expected (and will) upset at least half of them. Ignore it and do your best.

Drewbie01 votes

Skill can trump an OP champion in many cases... Just sayin'... So yes you can deny that if one played the OP champ instead of the one they are better at they would have won.

Terff2 votes

I only play champions I like, they tend to fit into the lane that I put them in, but I've played a few support mordekaisers before... xD I still think you should play champions made for the role though (nobody wants to be put with a adc/marksman zilean or velkoz) If you want to play zilean play him mid or support. For adc bot most people want someone who has ranged attacks and has abilities that scale off of AD, a few exceptions would be tristana and occasionally teemo, but I still think teemo is waaaay better AP same goes for twisted fate and lulu.

Basically if I'm support and I see you playing adc zilean I wont help you. But I'd help an urgot any day. If you do play teemo/tf/lulu bot as a carry, build them AP, they are still the same, just better.

EvilRabbitt2 votes

ADC Lulu is spooky. That machine gun pixie doh. >.> run far, run fast.

Terff1 votes

The only thing is yeah pretty freakin spooky but the pixie scales off of AP which is why I don't understand building her AD except for the small amount of AP bonus damage added on to her regular AA.

Tsunday1 votes

She's kind of like ADC Thresh. It doesn't matter that her Pix scales of AP because she can tie you down a lot longer than a normal ADC, She's going to get vision of you, use that to slow you, if you start doing tons of damage she'll polymorph you to finish you off. Lulu has good base damage (I love playing her mid against Kat/Akali, seriously start the 2 mantles for Abyssal and a chalice and you'll kill them in an all in even with no damage built) so her spells still chunk you, but you can't build against her because she uses hybrid damage to kill you off.

My personal favorite is when I can Ashe support for my friend's Lulu ADC. Nobody ever realizes what is going on until mid game when I laugh at them for 'focusing the support' and then both teams realize I'm the one with the talisman and sightstone.

Spacesuit Spiff2 votes

Also check out League of Children on youtube. It's basically just dozens of episodes of people playing dumb, dying, and going in allchat "report our ashe mid"

xRangii1 votes

Sucks that you had to deal with a nasty support. All in all, being a support main myself... I honestly don't give two hoots about what my ADC plays. If you are comfortable playing the champion you prefer, I welcome you to do so. I'd rather have my ADC be in their comfort zone than trying to figure out how to play a specific champion because "its the best pick".

Sure, having a good team comp is important. But knowing how to play a champion you like is just as important.

If my ADC flamed me to go Blitzcrank/Thresh/Leona, I probably would do horrid compared to if I stuck with my favourite main champion Janna.

Tsunday1 votes

Lol best part is when you lock in Janna anyway and then the enemy team picks one of those supports. Your team always rages at you as soon as the enemy locks in Leo or Thresh and you're just like 'I'm Janna, not only is this my main but I'm pretty much their strongest counter'.

I was really upset that one game when someone on my team banned Janna. Nobody bans Janna in my Elo so I didn't ask them not to and when I was like 'why ban Janna?' 1st pick said 'well I didn't ban her because she's good, honestly Janna really sucks, but nobody in Bronze knows how to play against her' ;-;

There's nothing more rewarding than playing a good Janna game <3

I came in around the beginning of season 4, where the tanky engage supports were still popular. Everyone got mad at me for my picks because I'd play a squishy support with a bunch of disengage ;w;

Little did they know that.. Disengage > Engage by the end of the season..

I don't see why that person would say she isn't good. Certainly she's not tanky and she doesn't have as much engage potential as Thresh or Leona, but its her disengage that could turn the ENTIRE tide of the battle ~

Tsunday1 votes

That's pretty much when I started, right before pre-season 4 started. Soraka and Sona were my first mains while leveling up but by the time I started ranked Nami and Lulu were my mains. Disengage, utility mages. Nobody really yelled at me for my picks because Lulu because pretty popular during season 4 and I did eventually learn the tanky supports (because everyone wants to go yi jungle and teemo top) but you'll often see me click on Karma, Janna, Nami, Lulu before I click on someone like Leona.

That and there is nothing in this game more rewarding than a good Janna ult. Saving your allies, displacing the enemy carries from their frontline, shuffling the whole battlefield in your favor all at once. It feels way too good to ever not want to play Janna. It's just sometimes your team needs more tank or more damage than Janna (which often just makes me sad)

ShemsuHor1 votes

Naw man play who you like and get really good with them. The "bad" champs typically require more knowledge/skill to outplay someone but if its "your" champ it doesnt matter 90% of the time. Theres probably 2 champs at each roll you just shouldnt play. Taric cough

If someone doesn't understand that proficiency with a champion is generally more important than a champions current power in the meta/patch, then they don't understand this game enough to bother listening to.

Obviously there are, or have been, a few edge cases where a champion is SO strong that, even when played like crap, they can still dominate, but these are the exception, not the standard.
