So..What exactly is Vayne and Caitlyn's roles now?

Freeza with an I··30 votes·13,071 views

This isn't a hate post against them, it's more confusion of the way Riot's been balancing them as of late.

When I started playing in S4, I remember that Caitlyn and Vayne both had set roles as ADC's. What I mean by this is Caitlyn was an early-mid game monster where she'd bully her opponents but would fall off hard later.

Vayne was the opposite, early game she had no way of easily killing someone but mid and late she became extremely strong.

So..What's going on anymore? Cait is oppressive in lane and oppressive until late game, Vayne has strength early and tons of strength late game. I really wish they'd put them back into their set paths. It's really annoying that late game Cait can just one shot anyone and early game Vayne can deal extremely high damage.

Though Vayne has weakness early still, Caitlyn kinda doesn't have a point in the game where she's weakened at all. I think this needs adjustment since no champ should be built around all-game power. It should be reserved for specific parts of the game instead of all game

I mean Vayne is still awful early.

https://lolalytics.com/ranked/worldwide/platinum/plus/champion/Vayne/

45% WR in games under 15 minutes and doesn't cross the 50% threshold until 25-30 minutes

Caits also lines up

https://lolalytics.com/ranked/worldwide/platinum/plus/champion/Caitlyn/ADC/

Highest WR early then falls off as the game goes

Both of them line up with the descriptions you gave.

Like I said, Vayne still isn't a god early since the initial nerfs. But Cait still doesn't have as much trouble as she should near end-game.

Vayne isn't even good early. She's trash early. Cait's isn't as pronounced but the trend is still there

Cait never had trouble late game. Safety is extremely important late game, and her E, traps and range give a ton of safety while items make up for the dps her kit otherwise lacks.

Her classic winrate by game length was u-shaped; high winrate early (when she is a bully) low midgame (where her lack of dps hurts her) and then high again very late (where items give her all the dps she needs). She still fits that pattern just fine.

She's never struggled late game, and there is no reason to expect her to now.

I remember vividly back before her rework she was weaker than a lot of other ADC's late game due to her power being reserved early. Now she has so much base and scaling power it doesn't matter what point of the game she's in, she'll still easily poke you away and one shot you for a slight mess up.

No matter how vivid your memory is, it's still incorrect. She's always been good late game. Stats don't lie, and her winrate always jumped up after 40 minutes, even back as far as season 2. Her scaling has actually been hit over time. Hell, she used to have an insanely high base attack speed (it's been reduced from 0.668 to 0.568, which is a major hit to scaling), and significant armor penetration on headshots.

Cait is good late and early. That has always been true, and it still is. So long as she has long range and an escape mechanic, it will continue to be true for the foreseeable future.

Nah, she was always a mid-game carry up until her rework.

What kind of stupidly used statistic is that? A late game scaling champion should not have a near-50% winrate in games under 15 mins. She's a late game anti tank champ, and tanks are late game champs as well, so why would she do even vaguely well early? She's a squishy scaling champ. This is an example of Vayne being strong, to say the least, when a late game squishy can still do pretty well when one team is snowballing hard, especially when most early snowball champs are assassins or other heavy burst champs, all of which counter Vayne early. Unless those statistics are HEAVILY skewed by feeding and AFK's there's no way she should have a 45% WR in games under 15 mins.

Nik Nikerson1 votes

Why shouldn't she? It is actually possible to drag a late game champ to an early victory.

Morgana Q Misser2 votes

You'll see Caitlyn players that feed and deal 0 damage, you'll see Vayne players that go 7 0 in lane... you can't just say the fed version or more importantly the version that succeeds in lane should represent how the champion performs in average games

Try playing Cait against something with´proper armor and you´ll see where she falls off compared to say vayne/Kog.

Provided those armor users werent so dang rare, if there is no armor involved then no marksman really "falls" off.

Adcs arent balanced with roles in mind all they know is this adc has 2% less winrate so buff them because why would adcs have varying win and play rates while champions like volibear and yorick can allowed to be stuck in hardly played places

Mordepool4 votes

1 answer for both, stat check from range.

OhBilly3 votes

They are both incredibly safe and frustrating to play against, with access to CC/self peel. I can see why Vayne's early is considered subpar- but she is by no means weak. Cait is simply more of a bully and harasser, and Vayne turns out to be a 1 v 5 champion with her ultimate up, as she was forever problematic with her %HP kit.

The latter is even more problematic now when there is no real itemization to counter attack speed monsters that got a single kill, ala Yi or Vayne. Frozen heart, thornemail, tabis, and omen- all insufficient to stop this style of play.

youngdrago2 votes

Idk what kind of universe you live in but Vayne compared to any other adc early will be bad not including supports in the equation. Vayne has zero attack speed steroid, is short ranged, and her e is super situational.

PB4UAME2 votes

Maybe compare her to more than just RIOT's favorite class, and the other 10 overloaded, over stated monstrosities, and look at the other 135 champions in the game?

youngdrago1 votes

Vaynr like any other ranged champion can bully a immobile melee any day of the week. Plus she has a w that does true damage with is a natural counter to tanks so of course vayne tip would be seen as oppressive but it’s not and isolated thing. Plenty of champion go to lanes the typically don’t play in as counters. Look at all the bruisers in mid recently or the fact that trundle supp has been a counter to armor stacking supp for ages. Learn to play a matchup instead of complaint about not being able to auto win a lane as a tank with bonkers base stats.

He's only weak early in the top lane. He's quite a bit less exploitable in mid lane since you can't catch him out mid lane and then just run him straight down like you can in top with ghost flash and most bruisers.

Tr4shB4NSYST3M1 votes

Yeah hes very safe early midlane unless the enemy mid/jg duo can dive him, but that doesn't mean he's strong early.

And I do agree he should be more punishable early, but that doesn't mean he's strong early.

Aatrox Airlines1 votes

He can literally bully melees toplane while sustaining off the wave. He beats bruisers early, he beats bruisers midgame and proceeds to beat bruisers late game. Not the only example.

Vayne's garbage early game.

Win rates pre 30 minutes prove that.

Bârd2 votes

Cait bullies her lane opponent early game. Mid game, she sucks at actually fighting but has damn good area control with traps. She comes back online after she completes a third item.

The Kombinator2 votes

In current style everything goes everywhere. You can see Garen+Yuumi bot, or Yasuo ADC, top Vayne, mid Cait, Lissandra support etc..

As for powerscale the early is always a support dependent stuff. Vayne going with an early power support such as Leona, or Nautilus can balance out her weakness. Cait just feels the damage overpowered style in general. She meant to be weak in midgame, but she is no longer that weak, because all damage is strong.

For other lanes, if they bring Vayne, then it is usually to counter something. Which again balance out her early weakness.

Pretty much. The only reason i ever saw it was to counter my toplaner premade who is main Garen/Illaoi.

So what is the problem with that?

That's 0.3% not 1%

Caitlyn is a sieging champion. She's strong in lane because she can consistently poke you down over 3-4 waves, but lacks the burst that other ADCs have. This makes her really bad when rotating, so she's not very good midgame unless she gets a lead.

Daddy Ants1 votes

wow 3 times over a thousand games!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that I think their should be clearer "power spikes" for all champs and roles, but also supports being busted makes it so hard to determine information from just statistics. If they bad vayne has as good pyke, they still win lane

Snowbrand1 votes

Cait is supposed to have a strong early and late game, but a bad mid game. That's what I've heard

Tr4shB4NSYST3M1 votes

Cait's power curve is more like strong early weak midgame and then strong again late. Also Cait has a role as a sieger with the trap line.

Vayne imo doesn't have a super defined role in this meta because we aren't seeing too many tanks.

ZephyrDrake1 votes

Cait has never had any moments where she was "weak" or struggling. Her biggest "low" was her mid game with her late being average when compared to other ADCs. She never had a "bad" late game. Cait's identity has always been "lane bully that transitions into a safe late game carry but doesn't offer as much as other carries as a result".
