Why is malphite so strong as a pure tank?

Just a question really, why is malphite so strong and does so much damage with only a tank build? like my last game he did 26k damage as a pure tank. Our jinx did 27k. That doesn't seem to add up.

Because his E's damage actually scales with the armor he's buying and his abilities have pretty decent base damage. Also helps that Sunfire is pretty common for him and that adds up over the course of a game. Seems like a low amount of damage by Jinx though, the game couldn't have gone very long.

Q base damage is really high at 270, W is basically a Tiamat that scales off of armor, E scales off of armor, his ult is AOE with 400 base damage, and sunfire cape does a surprising amount of damage throughout a game if he built that.

Edit: I just looked up the game and saw a big reason for it. Your team had 4 ad squishies against a tank who scales off of armor. Any time 4 squishy ad champions are against Taric Rammus or Malphite the chances of winning are very slim because they can just stack armor and their damage will scale up pretty high off of just armor. It is wise to divide the damage between physical and magical for this reason.

You really think a tank doesn't need damage?

But of coarse they do, they need the damage to clear the minion waves, otherwise they would get constantly pushed in by champion that can farm better. (Like the everlasting complaint about ranged top laners)

Jungle tanks need to clear camps. It doesn't suffice to trade clear speed for HP and sustain, because it puts the Jungler behind in camps, gold and xp.

The only tank that doesn't need to worry about damage is the Support Tank.

The main way tanks differ from Juggernauts is that Tank damage is usually in the form of burst, often paired with their engage and lock down. (Imagine Sion unleashing his Ult Q W in a short window) Also they often do this damage in an AoE. So when Maphite did 26K damage to the enemy team, he probably did so split among more targets. Also because he's a tank, he probably stayed in the fight longer, and if he had a sun fire, he would be doing constant damage while he's in the middle of everything.

To add to that, all champions actually classified as tanks scale off of defensive stats or get free defensive stats in some way.

Alistar ult damage reduction Amumu w damage reduction Chogath ult free hp Galio passive ap from mr, shield/heal, and 50% damage reduction during ult Gragas damage reduction and passive heal scaling off of hp Leona w both scales on mr and armor and gives mr and armor Malphite explained already Maokai passive heal scaled from hp and damage reduction on ult Nautilus shield scaling off hp Nunu free health from q Poppy shield scaling from hp and free mr and armor from w Rammus w gives mr and armor and its damage scales from armor and passive gives free ad from armor Sejuani w damage scales off hp Shen passive shield scales from hp and q and e damage scale from hp Singed passive converts mana to hp and ult gives free stats Sion w gives free hp and damage/size scale from max hp TahmKench biggest shield in game which essentially doubles his hp and his passive gives AA damage from HP Taric passive gives AA magic damage from armor, Q scales on hp, W gives both him and ally armor based on armor and shields based on max hp, and e damage scales from armor Volibear passive heals for % max hp and w scales on hp Zac passive heals for 4% max hp
