Champ select bans should be both Reactive and Proactive.

Currently they are only proactive.

By this I mean that each team bans 3 things they think are OP or do not want to deal with. THis is proactive.

More proactive bans are really not needed and making teams ban 4 or 5 champs proactively is not going to do anything but just have a higher pool of perma banned/take turns being banned champs. This is not really a improvement on the game overall.

However there is another kind of ban, Reactive.

Reactive is more strategic especially for non LCS games where you have no idea who you are going up against. The idea is to ban based more on what the enemy team seems to be planning based on champs they already have picked.

Examples? The enemy team has Ali and Malphite picked so you ban Orianna to prevent the cowball/rockball delivery from being a potential threat. Enemy team has Shen picked? Ban Twisted fate to stop the global ult madness. Enemy team has Yasuo picked? Ban Janna and Malphite so he has fewer means to use his ult.

How it would the pick ban order go? Both teams ban 3 champs proactively Then Blue team picks 1 and Red picks 2. Both team ban one more champ. Both team pick 1 champ to use. Both team ban one more champ. Both team pick 1 champ to use. Both team ban one more champ. Finally Blue team picks 2 and Red picks one.

Assuming 6 total bans on each side this would increase the number of champs involved in pick/bans to be 22 up from the current 16. And each player gets 1 ban except for the first pick who the first and last ban.

In order for the whole strategic ban to work at all levels of play and not just LCS, Riot would have to increase overall balance in the game. Currently people ban for two reasons:

  • They don't like playing against the champion because they have a very gimmicky kit

    • A good example is Blitzcrank or Soraka (Keep in mind that these champions may be considered as unbalanced too but are banned purely for that gimmicky concept that makes them unbalanced)
  • They don't like playing versus a completely unbalanced champion

  • A good example is Ekko or Zed

I do not expect it to work at lower levels of play as well as it works at higher levels of play unless players are actually considering things that could be problems.

Expecting it to be treated the same by bronze 5 and challengers is a fools illusion since mind sets are often fairly different between the 2 groups.

Less strategic players would call them meh bans but something while strategic players would view it as means to try and stop enemy teams insane combos.

Just another tool in the box. How it is to be used is up to you.

I get the whole "they wont be the same" thing but the concept should be similar at different elos, at least from Gold and up.

I ban blitz because the enemy always pays off my blitz to be garbage. I wish they would pay me too :(

Personally I'd go with 2 bans in the first rotation, for a total of 5. It's a really good idea though. If Riot actually cared about competitive integrity at all I'm sure they'd look at it.

The 3 proactive bans are more just League having about 30 more playable characters then Dota 2. Reducing the number of proactive bans from what currently is in league does not seem like something that needs to be done but if Riot were to decide otherwise then that would be fine.

I'd either do that or just have two reactive bans. I think it's better if each player gets a single ban rather than one getting two.

Another post about Dota 2 Captains Mode being adapted for league?

It is by all means a better overall style in that you can respond to the enemy team's picks without having to pick it yourself I will say that much.

And your one trick pony is showing in not wanting more "proactive bans"

I am guilty of loving this aspect of Dota 2 competitive play. I don't know the in's and out's of every hero in that game but the ban system adds more levels of complexity and can force enemy teams to pick specific things sooner rather then later.

Actually this is so simple and and right there insn't a real reason to don't do it. Number of bans are the same since forever (when we had WAY less champs). Just one thing, why not just keep the number of bans at 5? 6 seems a little too much, also with 2 more reactive bans you can give the chance to ban to first and second pick AFTER they locked their champ (avoiding** to some degree** to ban proactively even then ). But overall i really think this is a good idea that would bring more strategy to games that more often than not are decided in champ select in low elo.

Too many bans would be a different issue. Also the pick ban phase should end sometime, spending 10+ minutes in pick ban phase would be over doing it.

I'd propose to change the order to this: Same first 3 bans each Blue pick 1 Red pick 2 Blue pick 1 Each ban one Blue pick 1 Red pick 1 Each ban one Red pick 1 Blue pick 2 Red pick 1

I think 5 bans each is enough (1 per player), AND it seems more fair to give each team bans with the same number of champions picked (rather than one team having more picks in place when bans are added).

Hard to say if better or worse. But the 3 proactive bans are there mainly because they are already in the game.

We're overdue for more bans, and one of the most common concerns about such a system is that an entire role would get banned out... which is also perfectly addressed by such a phase system of picks and bans.

And hell, if we've waiting this long for increased bans, we should probably be asking for more than 5 per side. Heaven knows when will be the next time we'd get an increase in bans after the first.
