The thing about matchmaking

I've been playing a new champ, in a role that I'm not familiar with. Riots matchmaker seems to respond accordingly, putting me in lower elo games. This is good overall probably. Every so often though, someone will ban my pick and I'll ask to switch to something I'm more comfortable with. Last night i then proceeded to wafflestomp the whole team, getting multiple triple and quads. I went 29-1-7, and I seriously LOLd before going to bed. Certainly this happens the other way sometimes and I end up on the receiving end, which sucks.

I'm curious. How do you get put lower than bronze 5? That is your rank isn't it? Wafflestomping in lower than bronze 5. That idea is hilarious.

Easy, I play mostly on weekends so I don't bother with ranked. Normal mode has its own Elo calculation apparently. Think of it as playing against people who haven't been playing it like a full time job.

Matchmaking doesn't actually place you in lower elo games when you're playing unfamiliar champs, since it doesn't know what champ you'll pick at the time of matchmaking (as the match is already made once you get to champ select). Probably just the luck of the draw since you're referring to normals, where the difficulty of a match can vary pretty wildly due to premades having people with mmrs all over the place.

I don't think its directly champ related, but performance related. As I hadn't played adc before, I expect I was underperforming the average over a significant number of games and thus the calculation difference.

When you lose games, your mmr does go down, and mmr is how you're matched. So if you lost a bunch of games (potentially due to underperforming, but also even if you're playing like a challenger god who just couldn't quite manage the 1v9), your mmr would be lower, and hence you'd be matched with lower skill players.

MMR doesn't care about how well you actually do (which is pretty subjective, since sometimes game winning plays can produce 'worse' stats), just win/lose.

The old team builder actually did artificially deflate ones MMR based on champ/role if you were inexperienced on them since you chose those things before you entered the queue, but regular queues these days just use mmr which is an account level thing, not champ/role.

Normals mmr is separate from ranked mmr (so sometimes high rank players have low normals mmr, and are hence matched in games well below their skill level), and normals is also potentially a complete fiesta since theres basically no good way to match a bronze queuing with a diamond for example even if they did have appropriate normal mmrs.
