Why do People Hate Darius These Days?

Troll for Trump··9 votes·3,153 views

20%+ Ban Rate for a long time, near consistently.

So why?

You see people complaining about Panth or Renekton,Galio (triple doran's, which is being nerfed soon) or Fiora.

Yet he has a higher banrate than all of those.

Even beyond that, there's Lee, Cait, Yi, Draven, Vayne, LB, Ahri, Kass, Ivern, Blitz, Graves, Luc, Twitch, and Brand.

Have you played a melee against him? There, you get your answer.

Ahristocats9 votes

yes i did lol Renekton never lost against darius as renek Aatrox Yorick never won against them as darius

Penns13 votes

How do u not beat Aatrox as Darius tho o

Big Lincoln5 votes

aatrox is one of his hardest matchups tf is this being upvoted for

oh because "le aatrocks is bad"

Penns1 votes

How tho?

Big Lincoln3 votes

beat his ass

Penns1 votes

But then he also beats his ass and gets like 35 ad while Aatrox gets nothing cause his passive takes longer to stack

Ahristocats3 votes

aatrox passive can be stacked against minions

Penns1 votes

In my head he just gets all inned / zoned and fked before he can stack his passive. His win rate against Darius is also like 48%

Ahristocats1 votes

dafuq? where did you get this number? his win rate is increased by 7% against darius according to league of graph

Penns1 votes

http://lolalytics.com/champion/Aatrox/Top/ At "counters" it says 47.89 against Darius in plat+, 49.75 if you set it to dia+ and 46.32 in Korea.

But if you just look at the matchup.. how does Aatrox win? He gets 2 stacks with Q and E then he needs to get the other 3 with W autos which takes way too long against Darius.

Or he needs to stack it on minions first but I dont think Darius is gonna let him to do that as lane bully with a ranged hook. I dont even think Aatrox beats Darius with his passive-mode-thing early. Darius probably gets outscaled tho with life steal.

Ahristocats1 votes

league of graph says something else

and how can aatrox win? ressourceless poke+sustain+once he has passive he can run into darius, starts to trade if darius tries to flee, he slows+Q if darius tries to Q, then once darius has no Q (it has a long cd until mid game) it's a free win for aatrox especially since darius passive takes a long time to charge

Oelyk3 votes

Because Darius loses a large margin of trading power if he doesn't hit Edge Q, which is his only sustain. Aatrox can surpass that barrier easily, out trade easily being all Autos, and poke easily with E, NOT TO MENTION his passive counters Darius's ultimate. A good Aatrox will mind his fury bar, look for opportunities to poke with E, and wait for darius to blow his Q on a minion wave to make a decision wether or not to engage. A good Darius will try to side step E, make short trades, and back the fuck up if he uses Q and misses.

Troll for Trump1 votes

I think Yorick is actually really strong against Darius. Statistically, at least, and from what I've heard. Not many people play Yorick, so that could be it too.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what Aatrox top is supposed to win lane against

TheSingularity3 votes

While this may be true and kled can be added as a skill match up.

He leaves no room for many more than his narrow "pick me if you want dari to suffer" pool to use.

His counterplay isn't do this or this. It's pick this champion and don't pick any of these champions. That is a problem

Ahristocats1 votes

{quoted}

oh yes i know but he asked if melees could win against him, nothing else

i agree that darius suffers of this counterpick problem just like old morde

i would prefer if darius was balanced around botlane like morde since the EXACT same logic of old morde can be applied to darius (match up decided either in selection or by junglers)

TheOvermind1 votes

Jax can beat him in lane if he uses his E properly for trades, I've seen Wings of Death and Dyrus pull it off consistently. GP has an easy time against him in lane due to his safety, range and kite. Riven also can beat him up pretty hard at lvs 3-9, which is where she spikes hard and can burst him down. After darius gets armor it's over though. Box Box has explained this match up in depth many times. Camille dumpstered him on release, Not sure what happens now though, after all the nerfs.

Troll for Trump3 votes

Yeah, with Talon, and Maokai. I really don't see the issues. Talon, I first blooded like any other mid laner. Maokai (pre-rework) just sat there and took the abuse relatively easily until late game, where he gets locked out of fight by cc

Vekkna9 votes

Because for most players it's way harder to play against Darius than play as him. He's also a pretty common pick. He can also be really hard to kill, but he does too much damage to ignore. So that forces you to deal with a tank carry, which gives the other carries more time to dps. But if you go for the squishier carries first, Darius is still good at cleaning up a fight.

Also, Darius falls off some, but his chance of winning is never below average. Renekton feels cheap early, but he has to race against the clock. Darius' cheap early game doesn't come at a cost to his late game. It just feels like you have to survive 20 minutes of an unfair fight, and the "reward" is another 20 minutes of fights that are actually fair.

Zetto8 votes

Darius is a champion that just kinda has a lot of bullshit going for him.

First things first, darius is just one of those champions where you win or lose in champ select. Most melee top laners lose super hard to him, and even in the very small pool of melee champions that do win against him, like kled or renekton, the skill required to do so is still plenty more than the amount required to do as well on darius.

If you're second pick top lane, and he's last pick? Sorry dude, if you picked a champion that doesn't kick the crap out of him, you're probably going to lose. Combine this with the fact that he's very easy to pick up and do well with relative to a lot of other top laners, which means he tends to be a very common pick, and you have a pretty decent choice for a ban.

He's got the uber oppressive early game of pantheon, without making the tradeoff of a god awful late game that panth, and to a smaller extent renekton, have to deal with, which means that not only will you ever actually truly put him out of the game, there's never really a point where he's weak. He's strong pretty much always, and his only real limiting factor is how well the enemy team can kite him, which in part is removed from the equation by summoner 4 /summoner 6

In lane he sustains out the ass from his Q, forces you to give up lots of farm in order to not die (provided you're melee), can easily 1v2 past level 6, wins every 1v1 at level 1 (once again, if melee), is really good for ganks due to his slows and his pull, can kill you if you escape/ flash out with small amounts of health with his bs bleed, can fully proc the armor shred on cleaver from 1 AA and his passive, and gets insane amounts of extra AD from his 5 stack passive, which also feeds back into the damage on his bleed.

On top of that it isn't actually possible to effectively itemize against him. Rush armor? His true damage ult is gonna take advantage of the fact that you're not building extra health. Rush Health? The armor pen from E is gonna reduce what little you have, and with no extra resistances the damage is gonna hurt quite a bit. Rush damage? You better pray to god you can 100-0 him in one rotation, because you likely wont survive past that. It's not possible to effectively itemize against his damage while still building damage, which is what you'll need to actually try and fight him.

It doesn't help that he's very flexible in what you take for summoner spells and masteries, summoner 4 summoner 6 summoner 14 summoner 3 summoner 12 are all pretty viable picks on him, and he can make very good use out of grasp, fervor, and stormraiders, so he's very versatile in how you build his masteries.

I myself, as I've been spamming top lane Kled for a while now, tend to either ban renekton or darius. While renekton just kinda shits on kled, darius is more of a skill matchup, but its not freelo like some people say it is, and while I may stomp on a darius who doesn't know what he's doing, if im going up against a more experienced darius, it could easily go either way.

Is he the most BS thing on the planet? Probably not. But darius just kinda hits that glorious tri-fecta of oppressive ass early game, very low skill floor (which tends to result in high play rates), and countering a massive amount of the more common top lane champions, as well just abusing the crap out of a lot of smaller things, like his interactions with cleaver, that tends to put a gigantic target on his back for bans.

While there are lot of champions that are also targets for bans, like say, fiora, twitch, and blitz, in many cases its only a couple things about them that tend to be the issue, such as twitch's AOE burst, or blitz's hooks, whereas with darius, kinda everything makes him banworthy.

6Sfool6 votes

He warps the game a lot, and I can't think of any champion that's more important to peel and kite, but I never ban him. He's never an easy kill but I can keep him in check. Rather ban Fiora who can deal way more damage even faster, and is much harder to peel or kill.

Troll for Trump2 votes

If he's your third hardest, why not ban your hardest counter?

Ahristocats2 votes

vayne? LB? blitz?

are you listing low elo ban? or?

Troll for Trump2 votes

People seem to hate those champs, especially at low Elo. Isn't that the same with Darius?

Common thing people say is something along the lines of "People can't deal with Darius at low elos, he should be banned more there." His winrate is lower in lower elos, so what's the issue?

When Dar got nerfed a while ago on his passive, many high elo players said the nerfs were unjustified (I think phylol was one of them? Or youmuus? Not sure).

So what was the reasoning behind, that, for instance?

Ahristocats2 votes

pretty sure youmuus isn't high elo and darius was indeed nerfed for what i consider low elo which is plat+

he didn't deserve any nerf for above d1+, thing is darius is balanced around the fact that people in low elo do not know that his outer Q is worse than his inner Q, and balanced around the fact that people do not know that he can be killed easily before he reaches 5 stacks

Troll for Trump2 votes

Mb, but either he or phylol or whoever said that high elo players generally agreed Darius was fine.

Dar has a lower winrate in low elo than high elo.

If we're going by your definition of high elo, he currently has a winrate in diamond+ of 51.1% (League of graphs), while his winrate for Bronze+ is 50.2%

You do have to account for onetricks in Diamond, and lower playrate, but people in diamond should have a much easier time dealing with juggernauts than low elos, so it should somewhat cancel out.

The Darius nerfs occurred in 7.2, late January. Back then, he had a whopping (roughly) 54% winrate, and 11.5% playrate in diamond+ while having a 52% winrate and 13% playrate, before the nerfs. So what were the issues with Darius? Not a particularly high winrate vs playrate ratio to warrant a nerf compared to other things around that time (Poppy). The reason his winrate was high at that time was because of his interaction with the then newly released CoTC, which was overtuned, hence leading to Poppy being meta. After 7.2, his winrate and playrate dipped quite a bit.

So, why exactly were people complaining about him, to the degree that he needed nerfs?

Ahristocats1 votes

LMAO

he had 52% win rate in plat+ and nearly 51% win rate in diamond+ his win rate in diamond+ didn't change because darius killing someone at lvl 3 is extremely rare in high elo

and my definition of high elo isn't diamond+ but at least diamond1+ where you don't have a win rate for that, and i know that balancing the game around a small amount of players isn't riot's goal, even if in my own opinion it should be the goal because those players know how to play against darius

Troll for Trump1 votes

Are you sure about the 52%/51%?

I was looking at early January (right on top of the January 2017 on the x-axis), because that would be a better indicator of his power level before his nerfs in patch 7.2 during late January.

MB on the misinterpretation of your high elo definition

Either way, what exactly about him warranted those nerfs?

Ahristocats1 votes

patch notes, pwyff said that darius could kill someone at lvl 1 with old noxian might ad damage

i immediatly knew that this nerf was made for plat+ in high elo darius can't kill someone at lvl 1, and can't kill someon at lvl 3

meta toplaners all go even against darius or destroy him if played by a high elo player

Troll for Trump1 votes

What the heck is wrong with punishing someone for getting autoattacked 5 times by a melee champ with no mobility at lvl 1

Vekkna1 votes

Your idea of "low elo" is 98.7% of the global League population. But you already know that, which is why I call humblebrag.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge that Darius' Q does less damage in the handle area. It's less common knowledge that you can somehow outmaneuver Darius when you're slowed by 90%. Like...avoiding the blade is easy until he has a 350+ MS advantage on you.

Ahristocats1 votes

{quoted}

so that implies that: you don't have a cc you don't have a dash

i find it quite rare for a top laner

Vekkna3 votes

DrMundo Illaoi Kayle Malphite Mordekaiser Nasus Olaf Singed Teemo Trundle Urgot Garen TahmKench

These guys have like 20%+ play rate combined, so it's not exactly uncommon to see a top lacking a dash or hard cc that can be applied in under .75 seconds.

But when you look at the matchup stats, there isn't a consistent pattern of Darius losing to champs with dashes and hard cc, or winning against champs who lack both. The pattern is that Darius loses to champs with high dps that can avoid getting caught in the first place.

Darius builds a phage and boots, and runs your ass down. At that point it's really a matter of whether 1) you can outrun him all the time without getting zoned off the wave, or 2) you can kill him 1v1 before you hit execute range. Down here in the bottom 98.7% it's just way harder to dance perfectly around the Darius without losing CS than it is for the Darius land a pull.

RealČernochHours1 votes

DrMundo : Can farm from a safe distance with cleavers and poke him quite well if he runs up for a Q. Illaoi : Will have to use his W to clear tentacles fast before she slams him with her W. Kayle : Slow, speedup, ranged form, and the absolute cockblock ult. If you loose with her against Darius you just suck, sorry but bad doesnt describe it well enough. Mordekaiser : Skill Match-up but Morde should have the edge if he knows what he is doing. Olaf: Just straight out beats him with W lifesteal+Ats and Q dmg. Teemo: Darius will most likely start with apprehend so you just have to blind him so he can't use his AA+W. Garen: Can break free with his Q TahmKench: Cockblock shield and up to 33% max health dmg on W.

He's the most popular Juggernaut who is fairly simple to pick up and do well on. Because of how his kit works he basically has a free win against many melee matchups barring heavy jungler interference or a severe skill margin. He's a huge lane bully that doesn't drop off and has all the tools to punish enemies for simply trying to lane against him.

Not necessarily broken. But unfun to play against, popular, and perhaps too good when compared to others of his class.

agbudar2 votes

stupid sustain basically determines what can be played in toplane. Renekton bar anyone? never falls of relatively easy to pick up and tbh when played right he doesn't really have any counters.

and no its never fair being melee against him.

Standgrounding1 votes

Not fair being ranged either, since item 3142 (a smart Darius **will **buy one against a Kayle or Teemo )item 3071 and item 3009 give stupid amount of movespeed for the juggernaut

Arcus Diabolus1 votes

I ban Renekton, but if I would ban Darius, it would be because he is almost impossible to beat without a ranged poke or a ton of skill I do not have yet, as well as the fact that he is incredibly common.

He has an issue that many other tanky champs have. Riot need to get away from the concept of zero damage carries. There are champs that can deal way too much damage while building little to no defenses thanks to damage scaling from your own defenses, damage scaling from enemy defenses, or simply too high base damage inflations, or multiple of the previous choices, while being inherently tanky because of their kits+itemization.

I think a great way to re-tune darius into being more of a longer lasting fighter is heavily nerfing the damage and steroid of his passive, and buffing the cool down and mana cost of his sweep. Similar point with many other tanky champs that are in a bit to much of that zero damage carry grouping. Nerf the damage and buff the defenses/utility.

Troll for Trump1 votes

The thing is he isn't meant to be utility, he's meant to do dmg while being tanky. And yeah, I get why people hate that.

I guess you could split champs between Dmg, mobility, utility and tankiness.

Most champs are dmg+mobility or dmg+tankiness.

The problem is when they have 3 of those.

Just Blame Jenny1 votes

He's also kind of, uh, broken in teamfights in low elo.

It's very important to play around his passive, but half the people down here don't know what his passive is, let alone how it works. This allows Darius to clean up very easily and become a massive threat during team fights, even if he got dunked on during the laning phase.

Sexy Jack Rabbit1 votes

He's not op or some shit. He's just fucking annoying lol.

He's a binary champ that basically says: You either have some sort of mobility, or you die almost every time I apprehend you.
