How do you encourage your ADC to actually fight with you in trading hits?

I absolutely hate when my ADC plays absurdly passive.

you don't. you leave the lane and support another.

Well it depends on your and (your adcs) skill level combined. Without one or the other it's not a "bot lane" it's basically just a adc and support doing their own thing. Sometimes Adcs play passively until late game because it's a safer option, but some (players) aren't that skill wise and will just play extremely passively. Just depends on who your Adc is.
