support items and gold generation

I just watched a commentary that riot wants to make sure suport gold generation items actually give gold to SUPORTS not laners.

so how about rewarding heal/shield supports for actually shielding and healing?

only 1 out of 3 of the support items even gives an ally gold though.

He means Laners - as in Nasus and Gangplank taking item 3302 top lane, or Evelynn taking item 3303 in the jungle.

He is discussing the fact that Riot has acknowledged that there are abuse cases where non-supports are taking support items for gold generation and massive gold advantage.

Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that the item description would get obnoxious, I'd just rework the support starter items to manage experience gains. I feel like, done well, this could fix so many issues about the support role.

would be difficult to balance as right now the other 3 have some amount of risk to them Coin: need to be by minions. Relic: Need to kill minions to proc. Spelthief's: need to attack other champions/towers.

All of these put you at some amount of risk because in order to be by minions, you need to be in a position of at least some risk. In order to attack minions in lane to execute them, you need to be close enough to AA them. This allows the enemy to attack you. The same affect applies to coin, but to a lesser extent. This applies especially with spelthiefs where you actually need to be attacking enemy champions or towers in order to get gold.

With a gold for shielding item you could theoretically just sit in base in order to get gold. You could stand completely out of range of any harass, occasionally shield your adc, and get gold for it. There is no risk involved whatsoever.

In order for this item to be balanced for how risk averse it is, it would have to have a very low gold turnout. Then there wouldn't really be a point in picking it over coin.
