Are passive supports garbage right now?
The last 3 games I've played as adc I've had passive supports and lost terribly. Are they that trash? Why? How?

What are you classifying as passive supports?
What are you classifying as passive supports?
Things like
,
as opposed to aggressive supports like
,
Both of those supports have a higher win rate than Thresh/Morgana... who btw are below 50% win rate. It's not the support.
Sorta what I figured. IMO, it has more to do with how the support is playing than what they are playing. Things like Janna, Soraka, and Nami are most definitely capable of playing forward in the lane and holding an aggressive stance. And the way bot lane plays out right now, I think more aggressive play on support is often the better way to go than more passive play.
But a lot also comes down to the support reading their carry and aligning with them. If the carry is content to sit back and farm, then holding a more defensive stance might be okay. But if the other team is playing tentatively, the support should probably step up a bit and try to apply more pressure (and see if they can get their carry to follow suit).
Janna win rate 53% Soraka win rate ~52% Zilean win rate 52% Sona 52%
No, passive supports aren't garbage. However, the support isn't there solely for the whims of the ADC. The adc needs to know how to work with supports as well. If you're with a passive support, you can't be as aggressive.

Sona isn't passive... neither zilean... and certainly not janna
ok, so what supports are passive. Is it just Soraka? Then her win rate is still in there. Still above 50%.
EDIT: Even the few Sorakas I've faced recently are pretty aggressive to get that HoT on themselves from... their Starfall? I think
soraka aint even passive
if you find yourself laning against her youll find that her starcall spam is quite aggressive
all champions can be played passively or aggressively, but some champions just have tools for better engage
True, I was however, trying to just answer the OP with the best there was to offer. (Also I say the exact same thing as you in my EDIT). I listed the champions that I see played most passively whenever I encounter them.

Janna isn't passive? excuse me
Janna isn't passive? excuse me
IKR lol. I mean you can play aggressive with her but she does no damage.
They are passive though. Passive supports prefer to poke/peel, where as active supports initiate a fight. I'll admit it's a strange thing to say, as active supports often play more passively between fights, but the point stands.

Are those across all elos?
No, higher elo. Low elo champion win rates matter less because the player isn't as skilled at LoL and win rate could very much be attributed to your skill as a player as opposed to Champion balance.
Yeah, thats the problem. Other people. By all means, don't self reflect.
I'm only seeing a Lucian game from April (iirc) and the Bard fed (though got more gold than you?) I doubt the problem is 3 other people and not you, but unless you link to your games, I can't assess. Also, let me know what supports you had.

It must have not updated. I was on a 5 game win streak if you want to bring up win rates so badly. each game only died once and had 5+ kills. I can make myself look good just like you can make me look bad. I'm asking a serious question, are they bad? I record my games and go over my personal gameplay. I reflect more than anyone on the boards can reflect for me. Please stick to the topic at hand, thank you.
What you define as passive supports are better in teamfights. If your team as a whole can work together then Janna soraka and zilean can carry through utility. I think the reason theyre not played as much in lower elos because aggressive ap or engaging tank supports feel like they make a difference. I main zyra now because I know that even if my adc is terrible I can 2v1 if I position right. Honestly supports can win/lose a game in the champ select. If you can grab someone who counters most the enemy team you will excel. Janna is a team fight god. If you build utility on her and can ult in a good position you can plit the enemy team. They all have their uses and weaknesses.

Isn't zyra op right now? Haven't played her since she got changed. I know what you mean tho.
Zyra is OP because people haven't figure out how to play around her. Her spells do almost no damage but the plants still do about the same and last half the time. All you have to do against a zyra is dodge the root and step on seeds. You have to keep stepping on them before there are multiple on the lane. Shes meant to be a midlaner so that is kind of a pain in the ass but a good tank support can do it without too much trouble. People think shes op because they ignore the seeds, go to engage, and then its 2v2 plus 3-4 or more plants all shredding you. Her ult makes them attack twice as fast which gets a bit nasty but whose ult doesn't change the fight.. edit: ever since the new zyra was released, flash is optional if you know how to ward and position. her W seeds have further range than a ward can be placed. mid game you can farm jungle camps on your way to gank without losing health.
but whose ult doesn't change the fight..

Who brought up win rates? Also, I'm not making you look bad, but the statement "I've had passive supports and lost terribly" implies the supports are the reason you're losing.

You brought it up when you went into my match history. I'm trying not to call out someone for playing poorly. I've literally had my supports give up first blood in like 5 straight games as adc but I don't care about that as long as I'm playing well and they can provide decent lane pressure.
I went to see which supports you had because you didn't list them and, as a support main, I didn't know what "passive support" meant. I never mentioned who often you won.
Maybe I should just main support. Tired of the teleport Sorakas.
Maybe it's the choice of adc? I could be like everyone else and spam Lucancer.
Passive supports are useful if the person is half decent with them
Aggressive supports that get in the enemies face is usually more useful 20 minutes in
Idk. May be the elo I'm playing at. Gotta get gud.
Passivity is a play style, not a type of champion. You can be an aggressive Janna or a passive Thresh etc.
I call them traditional supports. To answer your question, the meta is a good mix of both atm.
