Are we ever going to change Rune prices?

Darth West··96 votes·3,029 views

Why exactly are Runes that are NECESSARY so high in price? You need them for games sometimes.. Forcing a player to spend all his IP on Runes makes it where people don't even want to buy them in general since they rather get a champion, seriously.

With this being the biggest online game, this is sad. You'd expect more.

I know it seems rough for you, but anyone who's been here for more than 2 years arent going to have much sympathy to give out.

There used to be 3 tiers of runes. tier one you used until level 10 when you unlocked tier 2, and tier 2 until 20 which unlocked level 3.

then about ~ 1.5 years ago Riot dropped all of the rune costs by anywhere between 20-80%depending on the rune type. Tier 2 was unlocked at level one and no longer forced you to 10 and essentially eliminated tier 1 altogether. I haven't looked at runes in a long time but i think all of Tier 1 is like 1 -15 Ip each now. meaning you can fill enitire pages in a day, run to level 20, and start on your tier 3 runes with out and major hit in stats or cost. this also made it so you could just jump straight into decent runes that cost as much as the original tier 2 rune sets. Tier 3's had their cost cut roughly in half for a full page.

So Riot has already drastically cut prices on their rune costs recently and wont be doing so again because they've already stated they want to find a way to do away with the entire rune system altogether. meaning any further effort on smoothing out the process would be arbitrary as they're planning on scrapping it the moment they find a proper replacement.

so in the mean time, while it sucks, atleast consider that had you been playing earlier, your runes prices would be double what they are now.

So while most people dont like it, there's your grain of salt.

7380IP on 9 crappy dodge runes just because i saw it on a couple of guides on moba fire. it was horrible

New players can buy runes slightly less powerful for 1 lp each, until they save enough for the best ones.

a greater mark of attack damage is like +.95 AD

the tier 2 option a mark of attack damage is +.74 AD

you get 75% of the value for 1 ip.

Runes are "free" in terms of real cash... though i suppose the boosts to earn them are where the $ come from. If you look at it from the perspective of a RPG, you just have to manage your IP budget. you want the good stuff, you grind for them either as a rare drop or to farm gold/gil/mesos whatever to buy them. Even RPGs don't let you buy legendary equips for 1 gold, you either work for it through difficult bosses, impossible minigames or a 0.001% drop rate.

If you want a larger champion roster, you sacrifice by having a smaller pool of runes/rune pages, and vice versa. Since it is unrealistic to master a large number of champs in a short time, my opinion is that you are better off spending more on runes and less on champs. By the time you mastered a large champion pool to require more specific pages, you'd usually have loads of ip already.

The bare minimum you need is an general AD page and an AP page, because there is absolutely no champ that does not make use of either of those, even tanks are all either AD or AP based, and those are reasonably cheap.

50000000000000001 votes

Somewhat off topic, but I'd suggest AP tanks take AD runes to help CS, anyway.

Need Gold 4 Tent1 votes

a lot of ap carries take magic pen reds, which magic tanks especially love with their low scalings and high base damages. the standard 2 sets are 15 ad/13 armor/12 mr and 8.5 magic pen/15 ap/13 armor/12 mr. a magic tank can go without magic pen (it works) for AD, but they usually have a way to farm anyway in forms of aoe waveclear (cho/sejuani/zac/malphite) or in-built last-hitting tools (nasus/shen).

Thus the AD would only be beneficial probably only until level 5 when they get rank up their skill to level 3 while magic pen gives a % damage increase that scales even more lategame.

Shrek Luigi1 votes

i like attack speed because a lot of AP tanks have really goofy autoattack frames hehe. since they're perpetually in combat and generally have gapclosers and/or ranged CC there's no need to take the wanderer mastery over savagery for those few points of damage at lv1. mao and naut instantly sprung to mind.

50000000000000001 votes

Nautilus with his passive has great last hitting, so he could benefit from MPen also. I'd take AD on Maokai, although it's been a while since I last played him.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Attack speed is probably better because:

Iceborn gauntlet (for the really rare occasions when you buy it)

and, more importantly, a faster proc on your passive.

Need Gold 4 Tent1 votes

I find that Abyssal/IBG/Sunfire are a kind of generalist ap tank build that can fit any tank (even manaless tanks like Shen can make use of them too, although with a bit of wasted stats). IBG can be a go-to buy rather than a rare one.

DUH.

Thats the entire point. Deflect some of the in game currency to runes to persuade people to purchase a few champs with RP.

Welcome to the free-to-play structure. There has to be some incentive to spend $ or the company goes under and we have no game to play. I don't understand this mentality of people who refuse to spend $20 for a few champs they like. If you've been playing a game for 20+ hours, it's really not a bad deal to drop $20 on it. At least they let you test the game out before you spent a dime.

Keep in mind you didnt have to spend a $60 charge for the game itself. You don't have to pay any subscription fee. There are no 'DLC' bundles to buy. Weird how nobody complains about that part though huh?

They don't make money off of runes. Runes are purely purchased with IP. Thus the point that Riot are a for profit company is moot, because they don't get one cent when you buy a rune, even the really insane 2k IP quints. Runes inhibit the desire of newer players to play the game more seriously when they look at how little IP they have, how slow it is to get more, and how expensive it is to put together one competitive rune page.

Eedat2 votes

You're not very bright.

Make runes IP purchase only. Players spend the IP they earn on them. No IP to purchase champs. Incentives purchasing champions for RP.

Or had you not figured this out yet?

Yeah, I get that. The issue isn't whether players have an incentive or not to buy RP for champions. I'm pretty sure Riot make more money off of skins and other things that don't actually impact game play at all than on champion bought with RP. The problem is that having to purchase runes creates another lock that players have to work to get through. Riot, at least at the start of season 7, was considering getting rid of Normal Draft games. Meaning that if you wanted to play an actual good match that wasn't just a clash of all the permaban champions in mirror matches, you have to play ranked. The problem is that, in order to play ranked, you already need to both read level 30 AND have enough champions unlocked on your account before you can go into a rank queue. Fair enough, they need to make money somehow.

But realistically, if you don't have a proper, all tier 3 rune page for every champion you play in ranked, you will be handicapped, since your opponents will have 30 tier 3 runes, and you start off the game at a disadvantage. Riot want to give more incentive to play ranked, but the difficulty of actually being useful in a ranked game before you even start playing remains largely the same.

Now, I understand that Riot can get you to spend more money by forcing you to burn all your IP on runes. But consider this: if that was the only consideration, then why did they allow new accounts to level up faster? Surely they should have kept the experience curve of levelling your account in the same time consuming state that it was previously, right? I mean, you can spend money on an EXP Boost in the store, to help you level up faster. So, why make levelling up happen faster? The lost money, right? But they did it anyway.

Personally, I think it would be more beneficial to new players to have a longer "levelling up" period in their account than to have to burn all their IP on runes, ESPECIALLY since there are so many useless runes in the game. Like energy regen, flat energy, scaling energy regen, revival runes, experience runes, in addition to the other runes that really just suck despite carrying useful stats, like Cooldown Reds (.2% CDR for 1 tier 3 Rune, utter trash).

In addition to this, if making money is such a big deal that they have to eat up all your IP with runes so that you're forced to buy champions with money, why not go a step further? How about making Masteries cost IP as well? You get one mastery page, and each of the other 19 that you can purchase cost 2k IP. Then, each point you invest in a Mastery page costs an additional 50 IP. That's 3500 IP per full Mastery Page. Then, just to make sure the money keeps rolling in, resetting the page after you've saved it costs 100 IP, just to keep the profits topped off, and to make sure people can't just sit on one mastery page if they ever want to play more than one champion while grinding to unlock other.

At the end of the day, a bigger player base means more people who could potentially give money to the company in exchange for champion skins, chromas, ward skins, icons, new champions, hextech keys and chests, and anything else Riot come up with. A lower "entry level" into being able to play on an even playing field, ie. removing the IP cost of runes that, for some ludicrous reason can exceed the IP cost of many champions for only one rune, will allow more players to start the game with the same level of power and potential to win lane as their opponents. This means a larger gross rate of player turnover from "new player" to "long time player", and thus more people spending money.

TL;DR

XP Boosts are still on sale, but Riot still made levelling up a new account faster, thus raw money gained per player is not their only consideration. They also don't charge anything at all for Mastery Pages or Mastery Points, meaning they are willing to leave money on the table. Removing the IP cost of runes makes it easier for newer players, and therefore new revenue sources for Riot, to get into playing the game regularly. Conclusion: in a big picture sense it is of a benefit to EVERYONE for Riot to lower or outright remove the IP cost of runes.

What do you mean with "high prise". They already turned these Rune Prices down to the bottom. When i played in season 3 i saved up ...idk...20k IP to get my 2 standart rune pages. Now you can get both runepages for like 10k IP. Its already half price since Season 5 or 6, when ever the rune price change was.

Greater mark of attack damage: 102 IP x 9 = 918 IP

Greater armor seal: 102 IP x 9 = 918 IP

Greater Glyph of magic resist: 102 IP x 9 = 918 IP

Greater Quintensence of Attack damage = 512 IP x 3 = 1536 IP

The AP runes are the exact same price except:

Greater mark of magic penetration: 205 IP x 9 = 1840 IP

It isnt bad at all lol. Guess what? It makes almost no difference running lethality as opposed to flat AD reds. Or other minute differences

While I agree that these generalist runes are cheap enough. cause those were my first sets. But being a gangplank main, I have to tell you, lethality runes make all the difference in the world.

They have already said they are looking at changes. I would expect something next preseason, probably, based on when they said they were looking into it. They've been pretty quiet about it, so it's hard to speculate, but it might mean they found something they like and are refining the idea so they can implement it later this year.

I'm pretty sure it is. Just search biggest online game on google and it comes to be at top position. I believe the last time their release their player base numbers was in 2014 and it was with 27 million daily players and 67 monthly players. I believe the community has been only growing the past few years. (it might be slowing down right now, from a personal entourage perspective) That'd be speculation tho.

i personally want Quints to get reworked similar to Keystones to make things more interesting

Aeszarck1 votes

You say that like they haven't already been changed, twice. Tier 2 Runes are now laughably cheap and some Tier 3 Runes are cheaper. Riot is going to rework the Rune system sometime in the future and they're not going to change their prices again. Tier 2 Runes are good anyways, the difference between them and their Tier 3 counterparts is negligible if you run the math. You can function just fine with Tier 2s and just buy Champions. The extra stats will almost never make any difference because the difference in stats is just so small.

Terchio1 votes

To all those who are talking about the Rune Rework:

Yeah, that's a thing. A really old thing, actually. I think it's been discussed at least since early season 4, when runes were rebalanced to be streamlined and simple by making a few stronger picks stand out, like attack speed quints and cooldown reduction (which was flattened to collect into values divisible by 5). There were discussions of ditching them even before that, but that was supposed to be a holdover until the new system came out.

As much as the current system sucks, I disagree with the sentiment that it sucks by design, and instead think it's by neglect. They haven't seen improvements (real improvements, to freshen up the system) since before season 4, and the improvements that have been proposed sound like rehashing the mastery system, moreso the keystones. I am not for that. The keystones are an annoyance in general, and I feel that they aren't only going to be a sub-par infusion into the Runes system, but they'll tout its successes by comparing it to a system that has seen questionable improvements at best since the beta.

In short, I want to see a Warwick rework of the runes, mostly just a freshening up. However, I'm prepared to see another Skarner.

Elikain1 votes

Riot did say they intend to rework runes and the plan to do so may be this year. Nothing has been confirmed but it was talked about in their video, i believe in /dev diary or something. As far as i can assess, since rune overhaul would be a major systemic change, that would be somewhere in the pre-season 8 at earliest, in my opinion.

DarkRitual1 votes

Unlikely untill we get the full rune system overhaul.

yingwhy1 votes

Because if they were cheap people wouldn't spend money to buy champions and resulting in Riot losing money.

Rune update was supposed to be this midseason but got delayed because they need to finish the new client for that which is only now comming into its final stages. Expect it for nextpreseason or midseason if the run into mayor issues and shit gets seriously delayed.
