Riot is Trying Too Hard to Stay Relevant

LoL is still probably the most popular game even if it doesn't have the explosive growth it once did but a lot of Riot's moves reek of desperation. There are many changes that seem to exist only for the sake of change itself. Likewise, there are reworks of balanced and interesting champions like Kog'Maw (destroying his AP Mid in the process). I've seen more new items, reworks and changes in the last year than in all the previous seasons combined.

Normally, this is a good thing but it seems to lack direction or reason and this process just seems to make the game balance more difficult and worse. I'd rather have fewer cool new items or reworks on champions which are fine but get a more refined and balanced game. I don't want LoL to be in a good balance state only for Worlds and if this game is to have longevity, you have to focus less on being "cool" and more on being "good" - which means balance and gameplay above all.

When a game is actually good and balanced, you don't need to make so many changes and most of those changes trying to fight off any threat of decline will just doom it by lowering its quality in favor of glitz. I don't want Riot to go down this way. Some of the most popular sports haven't changed in hundreds of years and while that's not the same as a video game just make sure that you don't make arbitrary changes which will only make the game worse in the next few months. A reputation for quality and balance will matter more than a few new champions or items.

Yeah, another Riot is dying post on the boards.

Don't worry I'm sure it will be right this time.

Yeah, another white knight defending Riot on the Boards.

Don't worry, I'm sure it will get recognition this time.

What is the OP your alt account?

I just think these post are funny. Fun fact, Riot has been dying since I joined at the beginning of season 3. So here is hope that they keep "dying."

Vistha Kai4 votes

You know what's actually funny?

That OP never said "Riot is dying".

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

That's what he is implying, its not rocket science.

He says riot changing things up is a sign of desperation, which implies that the game would be on a downward trend. Neither is true.

If OP isn't your alt, and you are really this desperate to defend him, take an L cause this is sad.

Vistha Kai5 votes

He's saying changes Riot is doing lately are not thought-through as if they were desparate.

While of course Riot won't "die" because of that, as there are always going to be people in denial like you.

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

In denial of what lol. Nothing the OP or you are saying is true.

He just typed a salty little essay about how changes for the game are bad and a sign of desperation. Name one game that has stood the test of time without changes.

Vistha Kai4 votes

You sure love to put words in people's mouths, don't you?

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

No I don't. OP said that the changes are a sign of desperation, which is not true.

You said I was in denial, which is not true.

Both of you are implying that the game is on a downward trend, again not true.

You done? You had to result to insults, Ironically doing what you accused me of (White knight and Denial).

Vistha Kai3 votes

Me: You sure love to put words in people's mouths, don't you? You: No I don't. Me having flashbacks of "He just typed a salty little essay about how changes for the game are bad."

Yeah, totally not true.

Let's rearrange what you said and remove one word, shall we?

Both of you are implying that the game is on a downward trend, which is true.

You said I was in denial, again true.

Now, we're talking.

If you want me to take you seriously - I really mean it - Stop being in denial. Oh, you say you aren't? Too bad the only thing you could say so far was "That is not true."

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

You think I want you to take me serious lol. I don't care about your opinion, nor did I ask for it.

No your right, OP's message wasn't full of salt. That's why he typed a 3 paragraph rant about something that isn't even true.

The game is still being played by millions of people. The game is still being watched by thousands. The changes are doing nothing to hurt this.

Just stop replying bruh, you're wrong. No matter how many times you reply, insult, and make things up wont change that.

Vistha Kai3 votes

I love talking with people like you.

No matter what I'll say, nothing will get through and you will continue to unknowingly embarrass yourself.

What isn't true exactly? Preempting your surprising response, "Everything" is a poor answer.

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

Well, the game is still played by millions and the player base isn't taking a noticeable dive. The game is still watched by thousands and that number is growing as well.

Better yet, you show me how you are right. Show me how these changes are hurting the game Show me the amount of players lost, and views that have gone down.

No matter what you say, it wont get through, becasue their is no point in listening in to wrong information. Also lol at embarrassing myself. Yeah I fell real embarrassed about a few people on these boards disagreeing with me.

Stick to meme's and games.

You don't and most likely never will have those numbers.

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

Riot releases the numbers annually. Both the viewership and player base has done nothing but increase year after year. If they opposite were happening you would see the same type of coverage WoW got when they lost a large portion of their subscribers. But that's not happening.

Didn't even watch the video, you're gonna need something better than "Random LoL Moments" to prove your point.

chess...4000 years and counting

checkers

halo

any console game with limited online functions

any sport

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

Comparing a real sport to LoL?

The only game that is similar to LoL in that list is Halo, and not exactly the pinnacle of popularity. Certainly no where near as popular as LoL ever. And you really think that game is still the same?

3TWarrior1 votes

lol, there are memes and videos about halo re-releasing the same game because the updated content wasn't ready for live XD

there are also a surprising number of similarities between a virtual competition and a physical one such as practice, dedication, countless hours spent, a fan-base, profiteering off of consumerism(seriously...people pay to watch sports and even pay to watch LoL...)

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

And at the same time people always complain that the new Halo's are worse, must not be the same game.

Also how exactly is LoL comparable to a real sport if the whole reason you brought it up is that they remain popular while never changing? This game gets a new patch every two weeks, it changes every two weeks.

3TWarrior1 votes

because you asked for any game that has withstood the test of time

redniwediS1 votes

Uh....

Saying Riot isn't dying is not defending them in any way, shape, or form. It's simply saying they are not dying. Next time maybe you should take a moment to think about what is said before jumping the gun on the whole "white knight" thing.

YCitizenSnipsY2 votes

It's hilarious that he jumped to the defense of some random poster making a salty thread, but calls me the white knight.

Vistha Kai4 votes

And... how exactly are those two things related?

Vistha Kai4 votes

Oh, I worder it poorly, but unlike YCitizenSnipsY and apparently you, I at least read OP's post.

redniwediS1 votes

I read it too. YCitizen may have made an incorrect assumption, but that doesn't make your post correct.

That's all I meant to do with my post; say that your "white knight" comment was very, very premature.

Uiraya4 votes

Balance and gameplay don't bring in eSports dollars so Riot doesn't care about them anymore.

Resent3 votes

yeah and they could stop with the new cancerous mechanics, along with the minigames.

LaughingStapler3 votes

I don't think anyone even read the OP lmao.

Vistha Kai4 votes

All they've seen was "Riot is dying"... which OP didn't even say in the first place.

AscendedxBlade2 votes

hey they are dying look at dynamic que and lower exp tp get to 30 they are trying to make it easyer to smurf and boost so they pay their bills.

These changes come for certain reasons, the only one that is a bit stupid is some of the changes they've made to Kog'Maw, and that is literally the only example you have put to back your statement.

The changes to Kog'Maw, or at least this is how I am seeing it, is like the big boss Riot putting his foot down and forcing him into a certain way of playing; Similarly like that did with Gragas (Smashing his style of AP glass cannon, and making him a tanky jungler). As much as the community might not like it that is what they have done, and have made it clear they don't intend to change it.

This entire post is just one ENORMOUS assumption, based on what little evidence you have supplied to back it.

Masteries weren't an issue. Adding keystones, alright, but the overarching mastery revamp was poorly done and forces you into choices you don't even want in some cases.

The keystones have blatant balance-favoritism relative to champions. Swain, malz, etc get nerfed because of DFT? Well what about all of the champions that are broken with Fervor, Thunderlord's, etc. Hell, Warlord's, hasn't even gotten Nasus nerfed. What the actual fuck?

Making towers paper.

Extending death timers.

Making minions self-push without any compensation, such as an exp boost. They gave an exp boost to supers, so this is right in line with that.

Making damage so over-loaded early that some champions essentially can't function because they take too long to ramp up.

Nothing being done about the state of the game and how hypercarries relate to it.

The fact that renekton isn't even viable right now when everything about the meta says he should be.

The state of ADC itemization and how some ADCs still remain 'unviable' despite the itemization making the majority completely broken after one item because each one is so insanely slot-efficient.

The state of Fiora (even after Yi gets his bruiser nerfs).

There are a lot of problems with league right now. Kog is not the only thing wrong with the game.

Most of the issues stem from unwarranted changes that only served to regress the state of the game. Kog'Maw, unlike these changes, did demand some alterations with the direction Riot wanted to push the game.

Well in kogs case. Ap kog was extremely un fun to play against.

3TWarrior1 votes

if the team actually had a protect the kog setup...which required like diamond level cooperation
