Visual support for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Players

I have a friend who's seen me play League & he's become interested in learning the game. I explained to him that some abilities have audio triggers that don't have any accompanying visual signals (Sion ult, Kled ult, etc.). Has Riot ever thought about adding deaf/hard of hearing support like an option to replace all sole audio signals with visual ones? (e.g., Sion ult triggers the screen border to flash red once).

I believe a similar post popped up a few weeks ago, so I'm going to put my two cents in again. Thank you for reminding us of this.

Being profoundly deaf myself - although I wear implants and can hear relatively well with them - I believe that creating an alternative option to sound effects for those with hearing impairments is an important change to make, and that Riot should consider it.

Sound effects are among the strongest cues in League - they warn you about an incoming enemy ability, when a turret was switched focus to you, and even tell you whether or not you actually last hit that cannon minion (since we all know they're so important). Being deaf basically takes away half of the gameplay, since sound effects not only are indicators, but also include regular game sound, like the announcer, background music, and champion lines (yes, I listen to those). As a result, giving deaf players visual options to make up for the sound effects they cannot hear - at the very least, the sound effects that impact gameplay - is a step Riot definitely should take.

About 1 in 20 people (I'm no expert on statistics, but I believe this is about right) have some form of hearing loss, ranging from mild to profoundly deaf, and tens of millions of people - possibly hundreds of millions now - play League (in 2014, 27 million people were reporting playing per day, and that was 3 years ago). So, it stands to reason that there are at least a significant number of deaf players in League, and therefore Riot should create visual options to replace the sound effects they cannot hear. Disabling the sound when the visual indicators are activated is a fair tradeoff, so the combination of the two doesn't become an unfair advantage to hearing players.

This is a gameplay update I personally believe Riot should implement, and I hope that someday they will implement it. After all, they have color-blind options, so surely the next step is to cater to the deaf player base, and improve their League experience.

That's still a problem for "healthy" people tho. Some games, I don't want to be bothered with league sounds (gets really boring) and turn on some music instead. If the enemy team has Sion or Kled, I think that it's a pretty disadvantage not to know when they do use their ults. Maybe add a quote in the chat ?

I don't know why Riot hasn't fixed this for players with hearing problems. I've seen posts months ago like this.

A worthy idea indeed. Perhaps they could go a slight bit further and add in an optional comic style text such as "GRAAAAAWWWWWUUURG!" and "CHHHAAARRGE" in a special font off to the top right/left as well as the screen edges or have them simply flash a red-spectrum colour as to not be too distracting. The font being a removable option within the client menu of course. This would just be for fun.

yeah in the very least for ults like sion and kled and tahm your screen edges could flash a certain color briefly (dark red flash for sion ult, orange for kled, teal for tahm etc) doesn't seem too hard or inherently gamebreaking

My post from months ago has some good comments that address this and similar issues, too. Here is a link: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/iGdEixrh-champion-voice-lines-and-deaf-players?sort_type=best

It would be nice, but hearing stuff can help across the board. Then you have to think about who gets the boarder flash. Is it the whole team? just people in the range? How big is the boarder? Does it stay for awhile or just a short blip? Does the boarder give too much to the players against sion? Normally you can be attentive and hear the ult if he goes for the long haul, but with the boarder flash anyone could just mosey on out of the way. Can't fix everything man.
