Maybe it's just OCD

So I remember a while back Lyte talked about going to a system like team builder draft for ranked (que for main role and off role, end up in one of those two for ranked draft game). It seems to me that you probably don't need 16 champions for 2 roles in order to never be banned/picked out of options. Personally I don't use 16 champs consistently in ranked even playing more than 2 roles as we currently do, and I've had riot delete champs I don't use/use often from my account twice now bc I don't like the clutter. Would it ever make sense or be possible to maybe have like a 10 champ ranked requirement with the new system? Please Rito, I just want my pokemon box to be pretty and organized into a single neat little row when I pull up owned champs.

Edit: I put this in game play and balance because the number of champs available in champ select for ranked does change balance, specifically you couldn't really do this if the balance isn't changed to only need 2 roles in ranked.

Just get LSI and make a custom champ filter that picks out only the ones you want to show up. When you go into champ select you can type the name of the filter in the search box and voila, it will only display those champs. I use this to keep track of all the champions who use swords.

No, You have to think 3 bans per side plus 5 picks per side. That's 6 bans and 10 Champs picked per side. If you are last pick you would have to be able to have a champion left after everyone else. It would never happen I know, but just leaving the possibility for it to happen is enough to keep them from changing Ranked Champ requirements.

That can be statistically invalidated though if you are guaranteed to have one of two roles, because there is not a perfect overlap of all roles being played w/ the same champs. I go into more detail in the other response, but for instance I would lay money that even if one team goes a kill lane bot there is one ranged champ in every ranked game, so if you're top mid and don't play an adc up there then there will always be 15 champs at the most that could be needed bc 1 champ will be picked not from your champ pool.

Like I said Statistically speaking you'd probably never run into this scenario unless all 10 of your champions are FotM at that time. The chance is still there. If they implemented free week champs in ranked, then ya you'd be fine with 10. Unless for some reason Your champ coincide with free week and FotM then "Murphy's Law" mate.

Shen/Nautalis support, Kog/ez mid, jarvan/olaf jungle, darius/fiora/mordekaiser/vayne/garen/riven bans yeah, if they were top they'd be toast already.

I suppose I underestimate it given that I play low pick/ban rate champs generally. I played Heimer mostly mid/top for a big chunk of the season and even w/out getting those roles guaranteed I wouldn't have had to dodge that many games if that was the only pick I played. Given that I also really like nunu/amumu jungle and stuff like malphite/maokai top. If you're playing stuff w/ low pick/ban rate then it's pretty easy to over estimate how easy it is to not have the issue even in a large sample size. (ie if you have 5 champs that have <1% ban rate and <6% pick rate then even w/only 5 there aren't many games they are all picked/banned)

In a contrived draft, where a player had no champions they could pick, what would you have the server do?

That's the question Riot avoids by making the minimum required champions <number of bans> + <number of players>. It's effective, and it prevents "what if" scenarios or abuse cases.

yeah, it makes sense. I just wish I didn't have to keep 16 champs to play ranked. I wouldn't mind dodging the games where I don't have a pick (honestly I don't play more than 4 or 5 champs at a given time usually and never end up w/out one to pick), but I can see why rito doesn't want that as an option.

it's not about roles it's about having a champion you can pick for sure. If you own 15 champion and you are last pick, it might not be likely, but 6 of those champ could be ban and what if all the other are picked? That's 9 less champions, which leave you with 0 champion to pick from. That's why you need 16 champ.

Except that w/ only two roles that is pretty much statistically invalidated. I've almost never seen 2 adc bans in the same game, but let's go w/ 4 to be safe, you'd need 6 ADC champs to be guaranteed the ability to have 1 up (let's call it 7 bc maybe there is a miracle and 4 are banned, one is taken top or mid, and you pick after enemy adc), if your other role is support then you can get away w/ 6 or 7 also bc similar logic. So at max you need 12-14 assuming just god awful conditions. Realistically you'd need way less, maybe 4 or 5 ADC champs and 5 or 6 supports.

The thing is when you're drawing from the entire champ pool there is a chance that is much higher hat all 6 bans may freakishly hit your pool. However, there is almost a 0 chance that they all hit the same role (even when it was fiora, garen, morde, darius, skarner every game, skarner and morde were different roles, so even if you played top and then went jungle or adc for your other role at max you hit 5 bans against you). There is more of a need for multiple champs if you play roles that have over lapping pools (for instance if you play mid and you play annie, she can also be picked at support so there is a chance both mid and support pick champs you own even though you only on mid/top champs or something). However, the limit to two roles removes the need for 16 champs if you only have champs that play those roles because there are guaranteed to be other picks that aren't in your champ pool (ie if you play top/mid then even if one team runs a kill lane bot there will be one ranged carry in pretty much 100% of ranked games played, so at max you'd need 15 instead of 16 champs, and realistically less than that w/ almost any combination of viable top/mid champs). The current system has a very very very low possibility that 15 champs could match up to your exact pool, but if you have champs for two roles and are guaranteed one of those 2 roles then you could easily find champ pools that would never be ruled out over every single game played in ranked on every server for a month because it's only 2 roles and other roles won't over lap in the pool.
