So, on the PBE Galio's W now also deals damage

Malicious Metal··121 votes·5,365 views

Tagging an enemy with his Taunt now also damages them, with the ratio scaling up to 80% of his Ability Power.

And I'm sitting here, asking myself WHY they exactly this change was made.

Galio already deals plenty of damage, his huge AP ratios making him extremely strong late game when he accumulated enough AP to basically one rotation-combo almost anyone except some really tough tanks. With the added AP ratio, he'll deal upwards of 440% of his AP as damage, without any base damages or his Q % max hp damage.

This isn't exactly why he's struggling at the moment since his damage is fine. What isn't is him being too squishy for a "tanky" Ap damage bruiser early game.

He does not need more damage, he needs ways to contribute to his team before he gets his items and starts being a damage threat.

This coming from the guy who said galio q doing half your health with a touch, let alone hitting you with the entire spell, was an ok thing.

Since you asked:

This thread was made defending Galio's new changes in relation to his identity as an AP bruiser that can go tank OR build damage. https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/4WktaU8Y-galios-changes-arent-meant-to-be-a-buff-but-rather-a-shift-in-playstyle

This thread (noted as the day after the previous) discussed how his kit shouldn't have as much power focused in his Q due to his identity as an AP brawler not coinciding with the poke playstyle centered on such a strong ranged tool.

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/MEMeb4n3-galio-building-ap-is-great-him-relying-100-on-his-q-isnt-and-heres-how-you-fix-it

And in the final thread made 4 days after the first he's defending Galio's release state by noting the Riot balance members who're Diamond while showing statistics to prove he was balanced.

Probably because MM finally had a taste of the Riot Kool-aid, especially in light of his 180 degree flip on his opinion regarding Morde.

Malicious Metal3 votes

Out of curiosity, what makes you think my opinion on Morde changed? Because post 6.01 Morde is nothing like 5.16, where most of my criticism came from.

ForeverLaxx1 votes

He's still a bot-lane carry, still built around being in a duo, and all of his skills are still the same as they were with the initial pointless rework to rebrand him as a "melee marksman" despite that not being at all in his character. The only meaningful difference, and I use that term loosely, is that his heal was allowed to be cast on minions as an attempt to placate people who still wanted him in a solo lane.

It's pretty bad when basically everything about the character's rework remains, but you change your opinion and convince yourself it's actually a different Morde than the one you were constantly complaining about for months. But yeah, sure, pretend you've "seen the light" or whatever. Should I expect your name to be in Red soon, like rickless?

Malicious Metal3 votes

He's really good in solo lanes after the changes. Heck, they gave him some neat little buffs that made his solo lane performance just as good as his duo lane one.

And calling that change insignificant is flat out wrong. W is his most powerful spell, giving him the ability to actually use it in a solo lane was huge.

So check your facts before you imply I changed my opinion out of the blue 'cause that's not true. Plus, I got better at the game and relearned him too. Going from Gold 5 to Diamond 3 gives you some perspective on a champion's design and how he functions.

the post that specifically mentions this?

That being said, the numbers are DEFINITELY too high but you guys already being at Riot's throat, demanding the balance team to be fired and raging like good ol' Gameplay is known for you're not helping. At all.

He defended the design direction, not the numbers.

Pretty sure he said it was fine since Galio looses his defense in the process.

I think.

Nah, MM said that Galio going into the direction of being AP focused was ok, while the numbers were overtuned.

I could be remembering wrong tho.

Yes, please.

The main issue with Galio right now is that, for a melee mid laner, he just gets bullied extremely hard compared to before the changes.

Mordekaiser has an easier time against mages, for crying out loud.

But yeah, we do not need the same cookie cutter tank design again but some AP melee mage is what a lot of top laners could flock to when they want to pick up Mid as their secondary role.

Kinda funny how the guy you replied to gets downvoted, but you, saying the same thing and agreeing with him, gets upvoted.

There tend to be waves of downvote spammers early on to any discussion-- less so since they changed the level requirements to post, but its still not an uncommon occurrence-- Add in to the fact that this is a MM post, who attracts a decent amount of attention both positive and negative, and I think we have a plausible explanation for what happens to magewick, imho, might have just been caught in one of the initial downvote wave.

Galio is like Malphite now. Someone you can build tank or full AP. Except with Galio, you do more consistent damage.

xelaker2 votes

and have tons more cc and mobility...and a slightly better ult for most situations.

Auz the Ripper6 votes

That last one is pretty debatable, considering malph’s ult is completely unconditional whereas Galio’s must be cast on an Ally

xelaker3 votes

I said for most situations... yea the ally thing limits it, but in use galio can do oodles more with his ult

TotalJerk14 votes

If they suck some damage out of the rest of his kit, this could be a good thing, IMO. This change would mean he actually has to hit ALL of his spells to maximize damage.

Like I said in one of my previous posts.. Favoritism They will keep manipulating with those "highly picked toptier champs", but meanwhile MonkeyKing .. hasnt been touched for almost 4 seasons.

Even if those Galio buffs don't go live, it still upsets me that Riot keeps giving love for certain champs or ATLEAST try, while ignoring others.

AgentBlack4 votes

Making a functional Champion more functional is a better investment than trying to fix a mess that needs a VGU anyway.

TheHappyReaperz6 votes

If Riot is full of favoritism, how come Aatrox has had so many changes? He's reliably one of the worst champions, patch by patch, has had a low pick rate for years, and still got a minor rework, a series of buffs, and the promise of a GU on the horizon. What does Riot have to gain from this? It may seem like Riot only pays attention to the highly picked champions, but they do try to fix other champions when they can.

Old Man Teeto8 votes

Riot: Hmm Galio's winrate isn't so good. Phreak: Tons of damage. Riot: Good idea, give him more damage.

Troll for Trump7 votes

Is he supposed to be an AP Juggernaut, Tank, or Vanguard?

Because they're pushing him towards AP juggernaut based on their recent changes and what they claim to be planning on doing to him; if he's supposed to have cc and protect his team, as well as have %dmg reduction, he should not be have dmg as well.

What's the point? It either you have ap or tank, you can't be both.

Mordekaiser, Swain, Udyr, Vlad, Rumble and Elise are not tank, not by a long shot.

As for the rest, you at best build an ap item on tank junglers item 1402 and then full tank. Singed is Singed, he is the exception. And now Chogah completely skip ROA.

However you will do less dmg because you build less ap and build tank, but you will also be slighly less tanky because you have an ap item.

TotalJerk1 votes

Every last one of those champions are potentially some fusion of damage and tankiness, or at least in the case of Zac, were before a rework. They provide a combination of damage and tankiness. There is even a term for this: It's called a bruiser.

How can you actually sit there and say that AP/tank hybrids can't exist when almost half the goddamn top laners and junglers are AD/Tank hybrids?

Prestige Eve4 votes

The continuous nonsensical buffs of Galio's AP ratios that keep forcing a hotfix is the perfect example of the flawed balancing idea Riot has now. Instead of looking at the kit objectively or taking his match-ups into account, their entire thought process is simply focused on throwing more damage on top of a champion until it works. This is why League is stuck in this broken power spiked state.

5050BS3 votes

I think he should be a mage that does damage but ye he is too squishy for laneing.

Maybe they need to bring back the whole mage counter he is and give him a built in MR boost or HP boost based off AP or something.

I miss the whole build MR and get AP part of him.

Shuyin1783 votes

I believe its to promote people to not just snap-cast the W. It only does the damage when fully charged after all.

Didnt you make a "galio being overtuned as AP is ok" post?

I'll forgive you though since this emote exists. [cass-cry]

Sahn Uzal4 votes

He did not, he made a post saying that shifting Galio's power to support AP builds rather than tank builds is fine, but also mentioned he was overtuned in teh same post.

the Design direction is fine, the numbers are not. that's what he said.

Not only has Galio been one of the most op champions since release, but during his W he cannot be displaced, guaranteeing the dmg and taunt versus all melee targets. I don't know, Riot crosses the line with this champions alongside Jayce and Gnar for sure, their dmg is far too high for the amount of dmg/cc they have. For example, all three had almost 100% pick/ban during World's, nothing has changed since then.
