@Riot: How would you feel about keeping current Abyssal in the game, but as a melee-only item?

This would enable champs like Diana and Kat to continue making good use of it, while keeping it off Liss, LeBlanc, etc. Basically, it keeps the item for champs that really like it as a first item against other AP mids, while keeping it off champions that only really like it as a second or third item for added safety.

I'll admit that as someone who really likes playing Diana mid, I'm concerned about losing current Abyssal.

EDIT: I'm not saying that PBE Abyssal shouldn't exist, but rather that it'd be neat if we could keep live Abyssal as a melee-only item, get PBE Abyssal as a new item, and rename and reflavor either item as necessary.

It has been suggested that a new version of The Abyssal Sceptre will be released specifically for AP mids. We won't be long without it.

The new Abyssal scepter wouldn't inhibit melee champions... In fact you have to be close range to use it... New Abyssal + Ludens = Easy 700-800 on any APC when level 9.

PBE Abyssal is poor on mids in general; live Abyssal is -core- on certain mids. I'm not saying that PBE Abyssal shouldn't exist, but rather, that it'd be cool if we could also keep live Abyssal intact for the champions that need it. This change would hopefully allow it to stay in the game in a much less abusable form.

One of them would need a new name, yeah, but I don't think that's much of an issue. Honestly, I kind of see the PBE version of Abyssal as giving weird stats for a Scepter anyways (what kind of skinny staff like that gives HP?). It feels, flavorwise, more like some armor that gives off a subjugating aura than a staff.

I agree with OP, it seems to me like Abyssal Scepter was made for AP bruiser/assassins like Diana, (and the old Gragas, with that awesome E Q R combo). But it is to good on any AP, so gets abused by champs who really don't need it. LB, for example.
