Why is Riven balanced around Animation Cancelling?

So I've decided to learn and attempt to master Riven through lots of practice. I do not believe she is by any means "broken" or "OP", but I chose her because she will push me to get better mechanically and learn how to properly animation cancel.

that said, already in my very limited experience with her, she is basically awful if you do NOT play her well with great timing on the animation cancels. usually champions who have a high skill cap, also can be somewhat useful if you play smart on them while you are still learning them. Lee Sin, Leblanc, etc. all come to mind. Riven on the other hand just feels like I am basically going to get shit on while i take the hundreds of games to master her.

Before the hate comes in, I want to be clear I do SUCK with riven because I am learning her and I do not expect to be stomping or even winning most of my games while I learn a new champion. This post is more about how Riven feels damage output/usefulness wise while you are not at a high level on her.

I Feel like because she CAN animation cancel and do insane burst combos in the blink of an eye, she will always be awful to anyone else who is not at that level. It just feels shitty to be honest. Can anyone answer me why she is balanced around such an intense level of mechanical skill? Is it just so she doesn't get out of control by the players who do master her?

If they removed animation canceling, they would have to give her power somewhere else in her kit to compensate. She will also be much easier to play.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to see bad Rivens face rolling me to death because the hardest part of their champion was removed, and Riven was buffed to compensate.

I dunno how to find graphs and statistics, but I'm quite sure that Riven players who do not use AA cancelling aren't that far from 48% win ratio.

So when you say about compensation buffs, don't make it sound like Riven gets 3 times more damage or something..

Because it's better for the game for there to be a wide range in terms of how mechanically demanding champions are, and Riven just happens to be at one end of that spectrum. If that's not what you were looking for you should have chosen another champion.

I'm not sure what you want here.

She is designed to be a direct reference to Marth from Melee and other fighting game characters, that's why.

Actually the reason she is weak right now is because her itemization got hit and she can't snowball as easily anymore because of all the tanks in top lane

She's meant to be like a fighting game character (Think brawl, tekken, mortal kombat, etc). Animation cancels are literally just riot's attempt at placing a combo system into league without actually providing a real combo system. Her whole draw for the player base is using advanced micro management to outplay opponents (Basically do comparatively complex things to get the same result that can be achieved with half or a quarter of the work).

Though I do admit outside of memorizing which skill cancels which other skill her most complex aspect to get down is the fast q combo. It's highly latency dependent and literally comes down to muscle memory (Q -> AA -> move -> Q -> AA -> move -> Q -> AA while making sure to mouseover the target at the same time you Q). Riven is just using extreme apm to use extreme apm.

Riven is a fun character to play.. But she's very inefficient to pickup and learn / master. Just performing decently on riven requires so much time learning cancels and matchups (Garen, Malphite, Fiora, Kennen, Quinn, Poppy, Graves, Renekton all blow and require very specific strategies) that I'm sure given the same amount of time and practice nearly every other champion in game would give more / better results.
