Why does Yasuo still have a 51% ban rate?

Linna Excel··43 votes·16,284 views

Does riot not see any issues with him?

Half of the players don't like playing against him and akali's been nerfed to death people are starting to remember to ban yasuo. He's not worth the heartache of learning how do deal with him when you can easily remove him from the game. Now because half of the player base hates him enough to ban him out, his mains can't play him half of the time. If he does get through it's probably because the other team's top laner is planning on playing him or is still scared of akali.

I get that he's a polarizing champ. That's fine. A 51% ban rate however means something is wrong with the champ. There's a difference between champs you hate but can deal with and champs who you feel are worth your vote to delete from any one match.

However, is there nothing riot can do to keep him fun to play for his mains while lowering how toxic other people feel like he is to play against?

While Yasuo isn't much of an op champion to begin with, he and his kit are pretty damn toxic.

Even his windwall doesn't have a correct hitbox.

This, and i ban him cause when he's on my team he just ends up feeding the enemy midlaner. I don't ban him from the enemy team getting him, i ban him in fear of someone on my team getting him.

Agreed. Windwall-esque abilities belong on a support (Braum), pretty toxic on a manaless assassin. That plus millions of dashes, he's toxic to play against even if he doesn't know what he's doing - and toxic to have as an ally too. His kit relies solely on being overloaded (free stats and no mana) and mindless spamming, because eventually you'll land a q-nado and win the game (or straight up be insta gibbed and lose it)

Honestly, i think hes banned because of windwall. Fights are incredibly short, a few seconds at most, and well, his windwall just cucks the fight for that period of time. By the time it's gone, all windows of 1 shot opportunity are gone, or wasted, and there isn't enough time in team fights to fight around that.

Like, it's not even an issue of not knowing how to play around the Yas's wind wall, it's literally just because the fights themselves are TOO SHORT to play around him, and his kit. He windwalls, fight is over before it's gone, or at least mostly decided.

I honestly see a Yas go in, windwall, die, and the team wins because it blocked enough 1 shots for their team to 1 shot the other team lol. People know how to play around it, there just isn't enough time in your average fight length now TO play around it.

As a former Yas main, i feel that's why tbh. It's not his damage, or passive, it's the fact that he can take away the 1 shot in 0.5 second advantage from people, and they hate that.

I'm not going to lie, this is a pretty annoying about his kit, especially when you have 1 critical skill that you have to land to be effective. That said, when I play overwatch, I play D.Va so I can get why people like that about him as well.

I think if riot reduced it's duration to 1 second total that probably make him less annoying to lane against and good yasuo mains would learn to hold on to it for blocking a key ult or CC and wouldn't be too hurt by it.

It should be more akin to Fiora's riposte. Riot could reduce the cooldown to compensate if the duration was only for a split second.

Hell Riot should take away the safety of his W being omnidirectional and make it only block projectiles from the direction he casts it in.

People don’t just ban him because he’s annoying and “OP”.

I ban him because I don’t trust anybody playing a Yasuo and then feeding heavily and not contributing to the fight.

Crescent Dusk10 votes

Because you can stomp him in lane 0/7 and it doesn't matter because he can go farm a side lane after laning phase and after getting bloodthirster, IE, and PD he becomes utterly ridiculous with only a few bruisers able to duel him after.

He's a champion that has ample mobility and a quickly recharing shield passive alongside ranged poke and big dick DPS.

Basically the same reason people hate Zed. It's not fun playing against champs that have multiple juking tools that will also melt your face off.

If a Xerath or Velkoss miss their stun/knockup, that's a large window I have to punish and likely net a kill.

Not so with Yasuo/Zed, both of which have multiple ways to dodge anything and their damage has a fairly low CD (shuriken has an incredibly low 6 sec cd and Zed's E is not far behindl; Yasuo's Q scales with attack speed and by static shiv he's using it almost every 2 seconds, which means every 6 seconds he has a tornado you have to dodge).

He's banned solely because he's popular? Why would anyone waste a ban like that?

Ban priorities should be:

  1. Pick/ban champs no one on your team is planning on picking
  2. Champs that hard counter who you are planning on playing.
  3. Hard counter options to teammates with multiple hard counters if you can handle what's going to be thrown at you.
  4. Low winrate champs you want to keep off of your team.

Meh, I wish I could ban champs that hard counter me. You are pretty much forced to ban the overtuned champ of the week at this point though. Goodbye, fiora or kled. And the reason people still ban yasuo is the same reason people ban pyke. They have too much potential to be feeding and then button mash and bc they either interrupted your combo or executed you all from half hp get a quadra kill and suddenly have more power than the champ/s that's been beating them all game long

He is picked tons while having a trash winrate. Also champs like Lee Sin who was always a popular pick even when objectively weak.

There are just some champions that people love to play more than others regardless of their strength.

a bad yasuo on your team sucks, a good yasuo on their team sucks, about 70% of yasuos spam mastery emote, his kit is overloaded. He has a resetting dash, a shield charge of a stattik shiv, a W that blocks most projectiles including ults, a passive that doulbles his crit chance. His Q applies auto effects and is lowered by attack speed, while his E has an increase in base damage by dashing through targets. Did I forget anything...?

People hate playing with him and playing against him. His kit could be 10 feet under and people will still ban him.

why not make him energy based. that way he has to think before acting instead of doing whatever the hell he wants dashing around 24x7. It would reduce the number of bad yasuo players and reduce the potential of the good ones.

If they just made his damn windwall fair...

One ability should not feasibly negate the entirety of a champion's kit. One ability should negate multiple champion's entire kits. Just as a point of reference, here are the champions that get completely cucked by the PoS and his fucking windwall:

Ashe Caitlyn Cassiopeia Corki Draven Ezreal Heimerdinger Janna Jhin Jinx Kaisa Kalista Karma KogMaw Lucian MissFortune Nami Neeko Orianna Sivir Sona Syndra Teemo Tristana TwistedFate Twitch Varus Vayne Veigar Vladimir Xayah Yuumi Ziggs Zyra Zilean

And these are just the ones that it either completely negates EVERYTHING IN THEIR KIT or grossly negates most of their kit. This is a huge amount of champions and considering there are passages in the jungle that the stupid thing is wide and fat enough to cover up completely, it actively punishes some of these champions for positioning themselves well relative to the teamfight. And it lasts for essentially 4 seconds. This ability is ridiculously unfair and unfun to play against. It literally prevents huge swaths of champions from actively and effectively playing against even a just middling skilled Yasuo. The Windwall is the source of at least 90 to 95% of my frustration with him as a champion. He can have everything else, IDC. But for fuck's sake, get the fucking Windwall out of this goddamn game.

One champion shouldn't be able to zone an entire team of champions off for 4 seconds after a tank has already engaged. There also shouldn't be an ability that actively forces you to have to be in a bad position in order to interact with a teamfight. And this isn't even touching on how many of the champions I listed aren't even using spells but are trying to AA; they can't literally do anything any if Yasuo just decided to say fuck you and throw up a wall.

You can play this game and lose though. That's fine with me. There's no plausible or discernibly good argument on your end for why one champion with one ability can zone an entire team off a teamfight for 4 seconds. its not even a particularly skillful ability.

Or you could just learn how to play your champion into him and just.... Literally walk 3 teemos to the side?

Also, who are you to say "no champion should be able to x!". Do you have any game balance experience? No? Do you balance this game? No? Well, hate to break it to you, but you have no authority to make that claim or even be credible in such. Its just an opinion, not a statement of fact like youre portraying it.

OtterlyLost4 votes

If you're trying to fight in a narrow area(which just happens especially if you're contesting dragons, barons, etc), sometimes there isn't an option to walk three teemos to the side. This isn't even addressing how he can literally cast it on himself and stand in the fucking thing or how even if you're shooting to the side of it, sometimes it likes to block the abilities/AAs from the side as well.

Who are you to say that a champion should hard counter a huge swath of the champion pool with just one basic ability? Have you got any experience?

Whether its a matter of opinion or not is irrelevant. Its an exceptionally popular opinion and if multiple people feel that way about it, it should not be that way. Multiple people find him unfun and enjoyable to play against because his windwall and other aspects of his kit lack clear counterplay. If the only thing removed from this overloaded champion is his ability to windwall the entire Kits and CDs, I think he got off really well.

Remove or rework the windwall. Its a toxic mechanic and there is literally nothing else in the game that works like it. Even vaguely similar mechanics at least have draw backs or last for way less time.

Oh no, a melee champion is standing in a single spot. I guess i cant just literally walk away.

Linna Excel1 votes

Team fights in the river/jungle aren't just a single melee champ though and depending on how smart the other team is about working around the windwall or flanking your team, the harder it is to move a little bit to the side. Plus wasn't there a bug where Yasuo could stand in the windwall and be untouchable by skills?

Anyways, considering OtterlyLost mentioned baron/dragon, somehow I don't think it's fair that a team would have to give up an objective because of a single non-ult skill.

Looking at it another way, it's a bit of an issue that he gives his entire team a safe avenue to attack from while the other team might have had several skill shots eaten if they all happen to cast them in quick succession. A pro team could bait out the windwall because it's coordinated while a bunch of randos don't have that luxury.

Funny how players in high elo dont complain about windwall and dragon, and last i checked yasuo isnt a common tournament pick. Maybe they know how to move 3 teemos to the side and its actually not an issue?

OtterlyLost2 votes

It's not just walk 3 teemos to the side. You've literally been provided multiple examples where that does not work. I know you probably have a hard on for this champion but the wind wall is problematic. Whether it is problematic at high elo or not is also irrelevant. That's max 10% of the playerbase depending on how high you go. The other 90% have issue with and do complain about the windwall. When 90% of players have issue with something, it needs to be addressed.

Or you can literally just... Walk to the side. Im a support main, but ive also ran lux into yasuo multiple times. Its really not that hard to just.... Not qwerbfjsksj instantly then act surprised when he uses an ability you clearly know he has.

Its a 20+s CD. Bait it then punish.

OtterlyLost2 votes

And you can't read because you've been provided with examples of where WALKING TO THE SIDE DOES NOT WORK. I can write it in big letters for you or do bullet points if that makes your brain grasp it any better.

Hell, I'll do both.

#1. Example A: Your team preps for a teamfight around dragon. You have to funnel through a narrow corridor. There are jungle walls on either side. Your top laner engages because he's something big and beefy and that's his goddamn job. Your mage, ADC, and Support are behind your jungler who is also beefy. Top is on river. You guys are in jungle. Yasuo walks up and tosses his 4 second windwall and blocks the entire entrance to the river. Your team now cannot affectively follow up or do damage to help your top without grossly putting themselves in a bad position. Your top dies, you have to retreat because the fight is now a 4v5. You lose dragon. #2. Yasuo is fighting you in lane. Your jungler ganks. He casts windwall and stands in it. It eats your abilities from all sides because the ability is fucking fat. #3. You're fighting Yasuo. You're standing far away from him and the wave, trying to CS where you can. One of the few times you get a little greedy for a minion, he dashes through the wave, is on top of you and casts his Windwall. Its on top of you. Even though your model's weapon is not in the wall it still eats the AA's. Moving back just encourages him to chase you and, since he got the first hit in, that would mean you'd die. Moving forward just puts you in melee with him. Standing in it also doesn't work because you're not doing damage to him. #4. You move to the side of the windwall and because its hit box is fat and they refuse to fix it, it still eats your AA. #5. Your spells clearly hit his model but because the windwall comes out from him, it eats the spells and AA's that have clearly already connected. You are now on CD and a sitting duck

Very nice post, Linna Excel, I pretty much agree with you.

An important point you made is that also Yasuo mains are negatively affected by it. Moreover, people who would like to main Yasuo ("Yasuo trainee", i.e., neither a first-timer nor a true main) really have a hard time doing it, due to the high ban rate. Which brings us back to Riot criteria:

{quoted}

52.5%WR at 5x ABR Average Ban rate is 7% also. Yasuo meets the ban rate but not the win rate.

This criteria (btw, the criteria for "Skilled Play" is basically the same: 52% WR at 5x ABR, so this applies to almost-all Elos ranges, excluding 0.1% of player-base and pro-play) has a critical flaw. Winrate and banrate are not independent: in fact, banrate seriously affects winrate (to the point of making winrate a useless metric). For increasing banrate, the winrate threshold for "Skilled Play" should decrease accordingly. Thus, extremely high banrate, like the case we have with Yasuo right now, would at least "raise a flag".

Riot decided to use a single WR-threshold (at 5x ABR), but in reality this is actually a function: for each value of the banrate, there exist a corresponding WR-hreshold. Also, you don't need to use an integer multiple of ABR, that's just an arbitrary simplification (which leads to stupid results). If ABR=7%, the (5,6,7) multiples are (35, 42, 49), so if a champion has 48.999% banrate, it will still fail to fall into the 49% "bin" and will be judged with a threshold thought for 6xABR, when it is actually extremely close to the 49% bin.

What we have now is even worse: a champ with 34.999% banrate, who fails the 5xABR check, will be judged according to the nominal criterion, just like a champion with 10% banrate. Nonsense. There is no need to quantize a function with steps as big as ABR, only a lower cutoff is needed.

People hate playing with him, people hate playing against him. He's Shaco 2.0. The only person having fun is the Yasuo player.

He has a high skill ceiling, sure. That's what the reasoning is supposed to be for him being so absurdly overloaded in his kit.

But why is he also known as a complete pub-stomper? Why does every Yasuo, regardless of level of skill or amount of games played, end up with a positive KDA and full build?

His powerspikes are completely out of control, and come from very very VERY low cost items, which tend to be even more gold efficient due to his passive doubling his crit chance.

He has no period of time where he is weak, no period of time where he is without insane mobility, no period of time where he is vulnerable to ganks, as long as he isn't completely idiotic and diving under their tower 24/7.

It's like a Vayne with no weak early game. Add in the fact he's the "Samurai" character, and you have all the insufferable weebs trying to 1-trick him so they can post their Anime-highlight reels.

Nobody likes Yasuo players except Yasuo players. That's the problem, and he should be reworked accordingly.
