Turret aggro clarity question

Is a champion "in range" based on edge-detection or center-detection? I know we've had those "he wasn't in range??" moments but I always seem to have different experiences diving and getting dove with larger/smaller champs, so I'm assuming it's edge-detection. Is this the case?
