Anybody prefer it when they're champions are not meta

AngelNipata·7/6/2018, 12:12:40 AM·67 votes·15,675 views

I'm not talking about them being bad, just viable enough for a win. It's just feels bad when every other game the champs I want to play get banned or picked first because the meta determines them to be freelo. Then there is the hassle of people discrediting however many hours you put into learning a champion and getting decent at them all because one change made it easier to win as your champion. Like I don't know, I like it when something I enjoy is just a little niche and I can pretty regularly play it.

I just stopped by to say *their.

Here is a helpful tip for the future. Any time there is an apostrophe, ask yourself which letter it is replacing. For example, they're is they (a)re. It's is it (i)s. Ma'am is ma(d)am.

Thats how I felt about Cho, I Loved him even prerework and than after the rework I couldn't play him for nearly a month because of him being pick or ban and finnaly when I thought people were done with him, Gargoyles got introduced and it skyrocketed him again into pick or ban. And than the hate came in again when they changed righteos glory to having even more movespeed on its active so that it was viable on more than just singed and it made my champ a have the lable of "Brain dead easy press one button to win" which felt really bad. P.S. If you ever play Cho and you get caught out, it may take them for ever to kill you but since you have no escape or in built movespeed, you just make this sad walk back to your tower as your melted alive by 3-5 angry little people.

Yeah, right now is hell for a Talon main :(

Looks at Irelia above 60% ban rate and about a 14% play rate... Sees self playing Akali Shen and Kennen more often...

Meh, whatever.

That's how I feel about Vlad. If he's viable but flies underneath the radar, he doesn't get nerfed, but the exact instant he becomes meta he takes crippling nerfs (like losing 20% of the damage on his full combo in the most recent nerf) or his itemization is gutted.

Got one vote in favour here - to a point. In the past, on my main account, I have used Morgana, Brand, Zilean and Zyra to climb as a support main - when they have not been meta.
Brand Morgana Zilean Zyra Currently, I dare not start ranked because two of them, Brand and Morgana, received buffs that they did not need, causing them to become pick/ban status. And my dear Zyra will be shortly moving into that nerfpalooza shortly (after Riot inexplicably gave her some tinkering).

On top of that, I have had the pleasure of seeing my enchanter items and supports which I have been using over the past 2 years nerfed to heck because Riot found them too strong (?) - because Riot apparently started taking advice from Youtube streamers who never ever if rarely play support role. Lulu Karma Sona Janna Soraka

The word meta has come to symbolize not just best and most efficient choices - but a sign that there is a giant target on the head of your champs in a patch or two where they will be nerfed to near unplayability. I would be happy if the champs were at near balanced state so we could actually focus on one or two, and get good at them (and the game) - without having to worry about mindless alterations.

I know that it is done to keep the Rift fresh - so players don't lose interest. But I would be so happy if we could get a near or approximate balance - at least for a bit.

Despite her terrible play and winrate, she's still my bae.

I love nothing more than when the entire world and Riot all forget about a really good, low-pickrate champion for a good year or so. I can ride that to a lot of good times.

Heimerdinger was utterly forgotten in Season 5-6 and was broken good. Urgot right now is barely played and incredibly underrated, though new Aatrox tends to brutalize him and may change that meta a bit.

Riot should just balance the game already xP

Leona - yes Thresh - no Jhin - no

The difference is Jhin and Thresh are always popular, if they stop being meta, they've been MEGA-nerfed. I also find them super easy to play against. Leona is never really popular, so if she's not meta she tends to be in a good enough spot for me- she's also a lot harder to play against.

It also mega-sucked for me when Leona was pick-or-ban for like, 2 weeks. She was my 'cureall' for a lot of matchups / comps. The following nerfs giga-sucked.

I've mained Vladimir since 2010. I've stuck with that man for over 2000 games through rain and shine, and let me tell you, it's been mostly rainy. His primary strengths include dominance in the later part of the laning phase (post level 9) and team fighting. Problem is, new meta notwithstanding, laning phase has been ending at right about the level 9-10 mark at the latest for many seasons now, unless you were in high elo where Vlad was actually considered good (through no coincidence.) Then whenever I'm doing well with him, without fail, my whole team (I'm looking at you, Sejuani, Braum, Leona, Sion, Trundle, Xin Zhao, etcetera) never fails to rely on me to initiate, always squandering my actual carry potential by forcing me to build bruiser then losing 80% of my health before they even properly join the fight, yet still expecting me to take out at least three people by myself despite being the target for everyone's initial burst and CC. Plus everyone always wants to nuke minion waves even if we're not in immediate danger and I'm sitting at around 20% hp with a red Q charging up. Far be it from low elo players to consider my strengths and play around them. Sure in higher tiers laning phase is allowed to continue for a while, initiators actually initiate and you can actually heal off of minions, but I (partly for my own faults, naturally) struggle to escape an elo that specifically oppresses my strengths. I've dealt with that for 8 years and never abandoned my main man.

But nah, nah. I totally just play him because he's "liek teh mst brokin cahmp n gaem rn" and in no way is it for something as silly as a love for his thematic. Surely all 2k+ games I've played with him have all been in these past couple months just so I can reap the benefits of that delicious low elo carry potential that relies heavily on higher-elo conditions instead of, say, picking Zed in low elo and winning a free ride through life as I miss every move but still 100-0 at level 6 with a dirk just because I hit R and got an auto.

I'm thankful that I don't really feel this much. (I'm a Nami main)

Turns out Janna 's shield is so strong that when people complain about enchanters, she takes all the hits for my favorite fish :3

AugustHeatHaze7/6/2018, 2:09:31 AM2 votes

yup its better for a champ to be viable but not good enough to the point where everyone is banning and crying about them being op

Yes remember when AP udyr was being picked in the LCS ( NA mainly) and everyone started playing him? Not only I couldn’t get him as much but when he was nerfed he was basically useless until season changes and Tiger buffs.

Jarring7/7/2018, 10:40:46 PM1 votes

i'd rather them be meta than not being able to play them at all. I was crushed with the ekko nerfs. I rarely play him anymore.

sure i can still take him mid and jg, but he still doesn't feel as good with the nerf to the passive. Not only did he do more dmg in early laning phase, but the passive was royally screwed over. i can get over the increase in duration of its downtime, but totally removing its slow too? COME ON.. they already made tank ekko's dmg totally irrelevant..why this too?

meh. whatever. Same with raka. i don't mind that she's meta.. it does suck that i don't get to play her when she's banned or whatever, but, it would suck more if they nerfed her heals to like HoTs or something. I would be seriously crushed.

So yeah, no.. I don't. I prefer it when they are meta.. I don't mind if a champion i love ISN'T meta.. but i don't particularly like it when a meta champion i love gets nerfed into the ground.

KingBlackthorn17/7/2018, 2:42:18 AM1 votes

I agree, but I play characters that are considered hard, so they are already not played ever.

no because people would still complain about zed if he was the worst champion in the game

Duskz1017/6/2018, 1:53:32 AM1 votes

Very curious as to what OP actually plays... not stating it makes it seem like you're trying to dodge the, "Well duh, you're playing a champ that was META from release."
