Sometimes I really do wish Riot's balance team would take the easy path.

Removing runes and in turn balancing champs after doing so would be an easy path.

The runes do not provide much of any choice since each champ has a clear 1 or 2 that are far better than everything else they could take.

You don't see things like phase Rush Jax because that is a huge loss of power. You see Jax taking Conqueror or press the attack and that is basically all he would ever take becasue taking somethign else is likely to lose him a lot of power.

Supports with shields will basically always take Aery.

If a rune is too strong you end up with everyone taking it like stopwatch.

In turn the new rune system has the same exact problem that the old system had where champs have a set page that must be used to be most effective. In turn the runes are more of an extension of the champion instead of a players preference of play style. This will always be the issue and champs will have to be balanced around their most optimal rune instead of the runes being an option you can take based on something that would be nice to have.

Literally the only ones that ever seem to be situationally worth taking are things like Stormraider's Surge which if you were in a losing match up against Nasus might allow you to get away alive.

Fighters having to take Conqueror to deal reasonable damage to tanks suggests a deeper problem for which the rune is only a band-aid. Or marksmen taking fleet footwork so that poke doesn't matter as much makes the lane bullies you want to be effective early game not as much of a threat.

Dota 2 does not have runes and it doesn't need them. And if it had them every hero would end up with the same general runes every game if they were anything like what is in league.

Runes are not needed for the game to be good. They are an unnecessary balancing nightmare and removing them would not decrease the long term enjoyment of the game after the balancing period was over.

So Riot balance team why do you take the hard road when in reality it is not going to provided a better result in the long run?

And yes I know rune pages would need to be refunded or compensated in some way. I'm not getting into that as it is another topic.

The easy path isn't always the best path.

Anything can be made easier just by removing things. Hell, if you wanted to make the game easier to balance, just remove some champions, and go ahead and take out items too.

But is that what will make the game more interesting?

And there will always be a best way to do something, that works most of the time. It's just the nature of humanity that the majority of us try to find the most efficient way to do something, and stick with it. Nothing Riot does will ever change that. But for the people that do like to experiment, that are the ones that come up with the new strats like MF support to counter Zyra, or Taric mid to funnel gold into a Yi jungler, those are the people to take advantage of a creative system like Runes.

If they did this would you play league? it's like cutting out a key gameplay aspect and filling the slot with more emotes

They are effectively call of duty perks but since every champ is different some perks are useless on one champ and completely broken on another meaning that there is no choice in what you take to get the best result. As such champions are balanced aroudn the best of these ruens for them because that is what basically everyone takes.

I don't go into a game thinking how important runes are to the game and how they make the game better. If anything I think shit, I just screwed myself by taking unsealed spellbook on a jungler.

I don't think many play league for the runes. I would hope that riot actually gives reasonable refunds for the rune pages owned though.

The game can be balanced and worth playing without runes. This would also likely lower damage early to mid game a fair amount in top and mid lane and make the hyper scaling marksmen actually have a fairly vulnerable early game due to less healing.

Does Dota 2 have talent trees for each hero now?

Does Dota 2 have talent trees for each hero now?

Specifically tied to each hero meaning that if one is overpowered it can be nerfed to deal with it in specific.

Runes are open to every champ meaning that if you nerf Aery into the ground you have 15 champs all getting nerfed.
