Lux: She needs to shine more

Champion.gg - Lux Middle Stats, Builds, Runes, Masteries and Counters

Ever since the Season 5 changes, Lux has fallen into perpetual mediocrity and simply does not see play compared to Xerath, Orianna, Ahri, Annie, etc. Her utility is easily outclassed, her damage is weak compared to the other long-range mages, and using her against manaless assassins is even more suicidal than ever. Even in Support positions, she simply does not compare to mainline supports like Janna, Thresh or Morgana.

#What are Lux's big problems?

Firstly, she never got any sort of mana cost compensation for the S5 mana regeneration changes. With her E costing 130 mana at rank 5, and her Q costing 90 mana at rank 5, while only having a mediocre 1198 maximum mana supply at level 18, Lux is highly prone to burnouts when you try to use your abilities to farm or push. While most would just say "Don't farm with abilities", realistically you are required to do so against several different match-ups (i.e. Annie, Zed, Katarina) to avoid being instantly killed. Even if you rush several early Doran's Rings, you will find yourself burning your mana out much too often compared to the meta mid-laners, who either don't spend much (if any) or are able to get mana capacity items without gimping themselves.

Second, which ties into the first, is that Lux is not a good candidate for mana-increasing items like Rod of Ages or Archangel's Staff. In the latter case, Lux's bad cooldowns and high costs cause her to take too long in maxing it out, while Rod of Ages simply delays her CDR items too long. Frozen Heart and other mana/CDR items simply are bad picks on her since she is AP-reliant, so she's left with next-to-zero options on increasing her maximum mana. Riot might be working on some new mana/AP items for PBE testing, but nothing's confirmed in that regard, so I'm not holding my breath.

Third is that Lux's damage is under par compared to other long-range mages. Xerath, Ahri, and even Orianna can out-damage Lux, especially since much of Lux's damage revolves around her passive, something that requires her to take too much risk. Unless you got fed, a single E is never enough to instantly kill minions in a wave, requiring you to auto-attack them to finish them off and expose yourself to attack.

In addition, though Lux can trigger her passive with her ultimate, she actually has a bug there at the moment. Presently, if you trigger Illumination with Final Spark, the damage won't include Illumination's AP ratio, so you're losing out on 20% of your AP with that burst. That completely sucks. (Thankfully, Riot knows about this and they're trying to fix it for 5.6.)

Lastly, there are some control issues with Lux that can seriously hold her back.

The first of these is that she cannot "pre-detonate" her E like Gragas can for his Q. In layman terms, you would hit E right before the projectile reaches its destination, and it will detonate the moment it gets there. Instead, Lux is left with an awkward 0.1-0.2 second delay before she can actually detonate Lucent Singularity, something that easily lets more than a few kills slip away.

The second is that her shield's casting animation causes a brief delay where Lux is left static and does not get any benefit. Lux doesn't get any shield until after that delay finishes, and it's during that delay that Lux could easily die. Meanwhile other support Champions with shields (i.e. Janna, Karma, etc.) can self-cast their shields and instantly get them, not requiring such a weird delay time. Players might argue that it's due to Lux's shield being able to affect multiple allies, but it shouldn't cause Lux to be punished for trying to bait with her shield like other supports would do.

#What could help Lux out?

Lots of you will say Lux is in a good spot because she still deals good burst damage at long range, and you'd be right. But that doesn't mean she can't get a few QoL buffs or improvements to get her back into good condition.

First and foremost, Riot needs to fix the bug on her passive when her ultimate triggers it. That missing 20% AP ratio is a serious problem.

Second is that Lux's E could definitely benefit from a cost reduction. 130 mana on her main damage skill is too high, and needs to be adjusted so Lux can function properly in mid-game.

Last is that Lux's control needs to be smoothed out. Allowing her to pre-detonate her E and making her W shield her at the start of the cast animation (instead of after the delay) would definitely help her out.

Adjusting Lux's damage is something Riot won't do (with the exception of fixing her passive), so the above suggestions will suffice. Making her more responsive and reducing her mana costs will make her a lot more viable since she won't always be forced to rush a Morellonomicon first.

TL;DR? Nope. Read it.

Thank you for this. Lux was my first main champion ever. I haven't been able to play her since the mana regen nerfs... but I still absolutely adore her. Her E needs to cost less. It's not so incredible that it deserves to cost more than most ultimates.

Starlighte10 votes

Agreed across the board, doubt it will get much attention unfortunately.

Aranii9 votes

I agree. The biggest 'buffs' Lux needs is QoL changes. Lower mana costs, a working passive, and intuitive ability controls. Add those to maybe a slightly reduced cd on her Q or W, or higher base damage on her E at higher ranks, and she's good to go.

ThePlasticSpork6 votes

None of those suggested changes except for intuitive ability controls are QOL changes...lol.

But I don't think her E needs to do more damage. It's already a relatively easy to land poking tool that goes over minions, is AOE, and has some utility attached to it. I agree with lowering the mana cost on it, and perhaps implementing the "pre-detonation" idea.

Obviously the bug with her passive and ult interaction should be, and is getting, fixed, since that's not intended behavior.

The shield change proposed in the OP would also be fine, since it makes her smoother without necessarily impacting her actual power budget.

If she got the following: reduced E mana cost, "pre-detonation" being added to her E, ult/passive interaction being fixed, and the shield affecting her before the delay is over, I think she would be fine. She already has nice tradeoffs for her strengths. Compared to, say, Xerath, Xerath does more damage, but Lux has better utility. I think she's mostly fine, but her mana is atrocious.

Aranii3 votes

Fixing her passive is a undisputed QoL change, and a mana change doesn't necessarily make her more powerful overall. It just allows you to have options besides rushing a mana item or two first thing every game.

Remlap12232 votes

I don't know about you, but I find Lux's passive VERY responsive. I've literally Q + AA + E + AA and double proc'd the passive, freaking chunking people. Throw in a Shoop Da Woop, and you'll obliterate anything short of a tank.

darkdill3 votes

It's a different bug. The issue is that if Lux uses her laser on a target affected by her passive, the passive will deal its base damage to it, but not include its AP ratio.

Ya, they basically nerfed Lux's ult because the base of passive was lowered, so her burst is lessened.

VardenSalad1 votes

Riot probably forgot to change it after they included the ratio on her passive.

The only thing she really need is a wave clear speed. Just few suggestions to make it work :

  • make her W able to apply her passive debuff. ( not activating them ) it is a skillshot move capable of shielding multiple allies, add another utility to it won't hurt much, but then she will need more timing to use it rather spam it.

  • make her Q, E, R able to activate her passive debuff. To reduce the risk of her AA reliant.... she is a mage anyway.

For more teamwork :

  • allow ally to activate her passive debuff. Both her and Leona passive are weird, while Leona useless when she is alone, Lux is useless when she is together with teammates. Number can be tweaked like half bonus damage or something.
Skoonie1 votes

I think the first change you suggested is neat, but making her Q, E, R, AND teammates trigger her passive? Her passive would be strictly better than Leona's in every regard at that point, and would be an absolute terror in the bottom lane, even if you did tweak the power of it for compensation.

trial12 votes

Triggering passive for teammates, just for more teamwork. Damage can be reduced, beside style like that already applied to others like Braum and Kallista. ( outside 'OMG Kalista is OP' thing ) Anyway, that part is only suggestion for more teamwork, nothing to do with wave clear.

For triggering passive with her Q, E, R : It was a suggestion so with a simple throw W and E, ranged minion will die. Right now, as a mage, she has horrible wave clear. If you can apply passive to all 6 minions, the most you can proc is 4. ( unless you build aspd, not sure if item 3085 can help to trigger passive ) Unless her AP is around 150 ++, her E won't 1 hit ranged minion while her E is her best tool for wave clear. Of course with item 3285 , her E is enough, but that take too much time and other mage never need it for wave clear to begin with.

I believe number can be tweaked, beside many champs already have different value when using skill toward minion/monster/champion.

Gooberp1 votes

I actually think that W change would be a good buff, but in the other direction: Allow W to pop her passive, not apply it. This would allow Lux to land her entire combo with Q -> drop E -> W -> pop E -> R -> AA. Depending on how close the target is and how fast you hit your buttons, you may be able to go without the AA if ult finishes before W sweeps back. It would also vastly improve waveclear via EW spam

trial11 votes

On W apply passive, I was more into AA trade.

  • Throw W to enemy, self shield and apply passive.
  • Simple AA, activate passive, shield receive damage from enemy.
  • W return, apply passive to enemy again, AA to trigger it. ( probably ended up like Sivir throw move )
  • W reapply shield, shield receive damage from enemy.

Yeah, probably too safe on AA trade and too powerful at early game.

Your idea is good though on W activating passive. For a skill shot to apply shield buff, the range is quite far. And capable of making her more burst style with QWER combo since most mage won't include any AA on their combo list. And most mages have good synergy between all of their QWER sequence. As always number need to be changed to prevent being OP.

I threw another suggestion on making E do more damage depend on how long opponent stand inside E area. Just like Morgana W, but Lux is instant at the end of duration rather DOT type. So a single E is enough for range minion, the speed will be the same with Morgana W on range minion.

TastyMmmYum5 votes

The suggested QoL changes are nice, but her biggest problem will still remain, in that her E's poor damage is going to continue to hold her back even if she gets those QoL changes. The fact that it can't even kill the caster minions while having such a long cooldown means that she's just too slow to have any map impact. Other mid laners can shove her into turret and roam while she's waiting for that second E to kill off everything. The wave clear abilities of every other mid mage right now all have lower cooldowns, higher ap ratios, and equal or higher base damages across the board (check Orianna W, Xerath Q, Syndra Q, Ziggs Q, Viktor E, Ahri Q, etc).

Yes, Lux's E has "utility," but to be honest how often is it used anyway? If you want to actually hit an opponent with it, you detonate it as soon as possible, which gives you a 0.25 second slow at most on them. Most of the time it's either damage or utility, not both. Compare it to Orianna's W, which also gives vision and also slows, but has a lower cooldown, lower mana cost, higher base damage, higher ap ratio, more powerful slow, even speeds up allies, and it leaves the slow/speed field behind after casting it, so you get the damage AND the slow.

Lux needs what Ahri got in a patch in season 4 (I forget which) that buffed the damage on her Q so that she could wave clear. The reasoning was so that she could actually clear the caster minions which would allow her to roam. Her Q has a relatively long cooldown (7s compared to, say, 5 on Xerath Q or 4 on Ziggs Q), so not being able to clear the casters in 1 Q delayed her waveclear and her ability to roam significantly. Enter Lux, with a 10 second cooldown on her E. If Lux can't clear the casters, her waveclear is set back even more than Ahri's ever was, and Riot decided to buff Ahri.

It's tricky, because making her E clear the casters will likely put her in the meta like it did Ahri, but I feel it's needed if she is ever going to be able to compete with the other mages at all. If you're worried that increasing the damage on her E is going to make her deal too much damage, remember that it is still on a 10 second cooldown, which is ridiculously long by any standard, and she only has 2 damaging abilities to boot (aside from her ultimate). Even with a damage increase on her E, she will never ever be a Xerath or Viktor or Ahri in terms of raw damage(who all have 3 damaging abilities on lower cooldowns). She just needs the ability to resist being shoved under tower by almost every other meta mage/assassin right now so that she can roam and actually have some map impact.

Riot won't buff anything unless a streamer says she needs it.

The competitive/tournament players decide everything for them.

Syndra definitely lost a lot of value when her stun consistency got nerfed, and she's probably still a little bugged. Though yeah, Syndra could also use a mana cost reduction on her Q.

LankPants1 votes

They also need to add at least 10 damage back to rank 1 Q, at the moment it does less damage than an auto.

darkdill1 votes

Well, it scales with her AP and also deals AOE damage.

Divewing1 votes

Syndra's at least somewhat as strong as before level 7/9/13, lux is just kinda meh all the time (assumptions based off player not getting fed)

Ancestor0071 votes

But I gotta say, playing as a fed lux is really fun. QERE and the autos delete squishies and chunk really hard the fighters. Im not saying she is fine but oh man item 3041(20 stacks babe) item 3157 item 3089 item 3165 item 3135 item 3100 is so fun

Hell no, We are NOT going back to the days of syndra spamming her nigh upon unmissable Q relentlessly all lane phase.

The damage early was nerfed. I think she can afford to be able to cast it more early on.

Cut the early cost maybe, but if anything it needs to cost a little more than it already does at max level. 2.4s cd on a 265 +0.7 ability is crazy

I always have mixed feelings on Lux, I've played a her a good bit, more last season than this one.

She is just difficult to carry with; people don't seem to understand she has higher cool downs than most mages and can never seem to understand why you aren't in the middle of every team fight.

You have to be extremely patient with her.

After the mana regen / chalice nerf I had to change my play style a good bit because you couldn't rely on spamming spells until something landed.

instead I switched over to a full damage 100-0 type build with mejai's and I just focus on not dying and waiting for the right moment to burst someone. I don't get to stay in the field as long now, but I just have to make a larger impact while I am out there.

Her passive is ok, you just have to know WHEN its safe to proc it.

I do think her E is on the pricey side compared to her laning peers, it either needs to get a small damage buff, better utility, or a mana cost reduction.

If I had to pick I'd ask for it to reveal stealth / grant true vision. I think that would fit her thematically as the light mage (especially better than a slow?), and preserve her uniqueness a bit. lowering the mana cost or cool downs turns her into another version of Ziggs, and buffing her damage basically turns her into Xerath.

^---- This would make Lux a better support and a better mid laner.

I'm fine with her being a hybrid type utility mage, but the slow on her E is very 'meh' to begin with and you usually don't get to utilize it very often if you want to do damage.

Drackolus2 votes

I -really- like the idea of revealing stealth on her. Thematically would feel very good.

PerishSoftly2 votes

I'm going to be honest: I hate Lux. I hate everything about her kit, from the dual snare that neuters melee's to the zone-controlling Lucent Singularity, to her ability to faceroll into a grouped up team late game and acquire multiple kills simply for firing in the general direction of the enemy. Back when I played Talon, Lux was one of his go-to lane deniers. When I tried to play Kha, Lux was there. When I played Swain, Lux obliterated me in trades with her E-AA-Q-AA-W shield my DoTs. When I played Cho'gath I couldn't safely farm without burning tons of mana myself in order to keep minions clear, meanwhile Lux can simply blow me up from across the lane if she lands a single Q on me.

Then Lux started going support, and my nightmare continues as she brings her almost-support level utility with her mage-level damage into a lane where she can scale easily once she gets a 1400 gold item well beyond any other supports.

Despite this, I agree with your statements; Lux has been overshadowed. She needs mana cost reduction. She needs something that distinguishes her away from Xerath and puts her back where she belongs as the League's Light Mage.

(This doesn't change the fact that Lux remains my utmost hated champion in League, and part of me hopes she never sees the limelight again because good Lux players make the game very un-fun for me and many others.)

SmokingPuffin2 votes

Firstly, she never got any sort of mana cost compensation for the S5 mana regeneration changes. With her E costing 130 mana at rank 5, and her Q costing 90 mana at rank 5, while only having a mediocre 1198 maximum mana supply at level 18, Lux is highly prone to burnouts when you try to use your abilities to farm or push.

Certainly a thing.

I'm not sure this is actually true. A Lux full combo deals 1308+205% AP. For comparison:

Ahri 1154 + 274% Xerath 1610 + 339% -- but this overstates it considerably, because landing 3 Rs requires serious outplay Orianna 910 + 220%

You could maybe argue for ratio buffs, but it doesn't look like her damage is particularly out of line, especially considering the low cooldown on her ult.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable QoL buff.

TL;DR? Nope, not summarizing. Read it.

I think you actually did summarize your requests just above this =P

darkdill1 votes

Remember that part of Ahri's damage is true damage, making it more efficient than Lux. Additionally, Orianna has much nastier utility than Lux does thanks to her ultimate.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

Those champions do have advantages over Lux, to be sure. Of course, Lux has her own advantages too -- her EQR combo is executed from huge range, her R has a very short cooldown, and people don't respect her W nearly enough for how much damage it blocks. I don't think you'll really get far with this line of reasoning.

Better to simply say "there's room for Lux to be better without being OP". The small QoL stuff you asked for (E mana cost, early E activation, fixed bugs) really does seem like an improvement for the game.

just shield strength of W also E mana cost (and maybe slow too), that's it... enough... (also for bug with Illumination passive fix)

for shield strength maybe add base by 0/5/10/15/20 and raise AP ratio from 35% to 40% (since most usually maxed W last maybe little useless)

Not saying that every rework hits the mark (Looking at you, Karma and Veigar.), but you saying that her rework is going to be bad without even knowing what they're planning to do with her isn't much better. And besides, I LOVE the new Xerath. He became the ultimate poke mage after his rework.

If you like the way the champion plays than you shouldn't want a rework.

New Xerath is fine as a new champion, but he's nothing like old Xerath. I think the games worse off without old Xerath in it, even if new Xerath is a good poke mage.

Completely awful idea and we don't need to repeat the mistake with Gragas when they let him pre-detonate his Q.

It either has to sit there and charge for damage or it needs to not be pre-detonatable. You cannot have both instant high damage and pre-detonation.

Also I'd argue that you shouldn't reduce her E mana cost as well since her waveclear is so stupid good

quote broke, woops, fixing

darkdill2 votes

Look at a Xerath's waveclear and tell me Lux's is "stupid good" afterwards.

Also, I don't see why you wouldn't allow Lux to pre-detonate her E. When you pre-detonate a Gragas Q, you're giving up its maximum damage potential and slow potential. It'd be the same story for Lux in that she gives up the slowing field for instant damage, and hers doesn't gain in power as it remains in place.
