Chat Wheel

I 100% agree with the chat ban system. Hell, ive been chat banned multiple times, and it has encouraged me to focus on developing good behavior. I think its a great initiative, but i feel like it detracts from the overall team experience in a small way. I feel that chat banned players are not able to participate in map calls, objective info, summoner timers, buff timers, etc. I propose two alternative solutions to this problem.

  1. this is not really a solution, but it would allow players with chat bans to /all chat phrases like GG or GLHF. this isnt really a solution, just an idea.

  2. We adopt a chat wheel for chat banned players, or all players! This would be an addition to the standard chat restriction, but i feel it could be super succesful. (http://i.ytimg.com/vi/DIi3hWGVcQo/maxresdefault.jpg) that is an example of the DoTA chat wheel.

Just a thought, and rito could you reply? im interested if you have pursued ideas like this in the past

EDIT: ok, thanks so much for the positive responses guys! I really liked the feedback. I would like to post a few things for clarification:

  1. This is my first big forum post thanks for the super awesome response!
  2. The chat wheel above is an example from dota. I do agree that if this were to be implemented it would be important to alter the commands and phrases
  3. If this were to be implemented, then i agree there should be a way to limit the amount of times this could be used.
  4. Could we get a Rioter on this? I am intrigued about what Riot thinks about this idea!
  5. There is an 88% community desire for a system like this! lets get this post to riot!

TL;DR LETS GET SOME REDS TO TAKE THIS TO AN IDEA SESH!

THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT (Blitzcrank Thresh Soraka Leona ) GUYS!!

Chat wheel's missing my favorite one, though. "I immediately regret my decision"

NorthernDruid7 votes

We need a ping for that so I can hotkey it.

Would be nice to be able to instantly let your team know yoy're aware of how stupid you were being.

Hahah indeed!

YOU will spam "help" after you die

You will spam "get back" when someone is taking CS near you

you'll spam "well played" when a team-mate dies and makes a mistake

You'll say "GG" at 5 minutes when you lose your lane

go away

L2D tyler12 votes

Hahaha, ok man this is actually really good feedback. The chat wheel above is from dota and i was just using it as en example, i thought the idea was nice, but thanks for the feedback. Maybe they could make GG only available at 20 minutes or something?

HeWolf6 votes

I wouldn't stop laughing if someone spammed the hell out of "Well played" over my corpse. 10/10 would lose lane again

Instead of always being negative and crying about what could go wrong, how about we actually implement a fucking thing for a change and see how it goes, and if it does get down to shit, then just remove it. I'm getting tired of all the mongloids that cry about how every cool suggested feature could be used for griefing. YEAH, there's always this option with everything in life. Why don't they give us the tools FIRST and see what we do with them AFTERWARDS? They are not giving nukes to children, it's a god damn chat tool that could be removed in a couple of hours.

Penta Penguin1 votes

Because in this case, the "tool" is catering to toxic people who can't accept their chat ban. They're chat-banned for a reason, and it's not so they have more ability to communicate in negative ways.

L2D tyler13 votes

Too be fair, i believe that this tool is catered to the teammates of chat banned players who shouldn't suffer a lack of communication due to a chat banned teammate. This isn't giving toxic players a tool to rage with.

I play support, looking forward to "Need wards" "Need wards" "Need wards" "Need wards" -.-

The Ellimiist3 votes

Yup and sadly alot of support deserve it and unlike Dota (where you pay per ward) there is no excuses for poor warding in LoL

Sukishoo13 votes

Sorry but league is about a team effort to ward, hence why you can only have 3 up at a time... so it's not the supports job.. it's EVERYONES

The Ellimiist3 votes

Noone said it wasn't but you would be surprised how often supports walking around with a full sightstone and suboptimal wards

Adaelphon Delat1 votes

The support can only place so many wards. Early game they have the same warding potential as anyone else, possibly one extra ward. On the first trip back, if they buy a wardstone, they get 3 wards at once, then 1 more ward, then have to go back. It's not much work to help out, just keep placing trinket wards and at level 9, spend 250 gold to upgrade it, gaining significantly more ward uptime (enough to keep up 2-3 wards at once).

I see you are missing the "Get out of my lane" ping and /all "Everyone is sh*t except for me!"

"DAT CHAMP SO EASY" and "I'm down @20" directly from the Greatest Hits 2010-2015

Daedalus8713 votes

This looks like an improvement on the Ping wheel and I like it.

Aria Valkyrie3 votes

One thing that i want is a hotkey-able ping for supports (or anyone, technically) that automatically hits you that says something along the lines of "I AM PEELING FOR YOU, RUN THE HELL AWAY" for those dumb adcs/assassins/idiots-on-killstreaks who stick around instead of getting the hell outta dodge. could be in the wheel too, but i'd like a ping like that. (on the killstreak thing, i really wish there was some indicator of teammates being on a killstreak. make it easier to pick who to sacrifice peel for the rest of the team)

Keep in mind this isn't only useful for chat-banned players, everyone. My best example would be in Smite, where the Voice-Guided System balances comprehensiveness, ease of use (after a bit of getting used to), and relative inability to spam through the message "VGS has been flood protected. (X seconds remaining)" when you do so. Sure, it might get annoying to hear some old gruff guy shouting GANKGANKGANKGANKGANK periodically, but the pros far outweigh the cons.

I'm not saying League needs the same system, but the fact that it gets much more use as intended than abuse at least says something about the concept.

L2D tyler11 votes

I agree completely, the pros are far greater than the cons

All for it.

The specific terms in your wheel need work, but the idea is a good one, for all players.

One thing which I'd love to see (but which I very much doubt could be implemented) would be a short list of important messages which would be spoken by your character.

I've seen something similar in DOTA2, where characters will automatically say things like "mid missing", but I'm talking about a set of lines which could be manually activated.

L2D tyler11 votes

These are really great ideas man! Lets get this to Riot!

RavenMagus2 votes

The wheel pictured IS the one from DOTA2. Those aren't all the options that are available in DOTA2's chat wheel (it's customizable so you can choose what's there)

windwolf7771 votes

It would also be nice if it was just as customizable as the dota one. I really like some of the flavor ones like >Well Played!, >Space Created, >That just happened, among others. Or even add voice coms finally as well. Just add a mute function for the annoying ones

The Ellimiist1 votes

As someone who has played alot of Dota, the worst part of the chat wheel is that chat banned players can use it and will spam that shit as much as they can.

Arcade Andrew1 votes

When I brought up the idea that all chat restricted players should get 1 message at the end of the game for them to say GG

I got downvoted by a pack of angry mobs, yet you get upvotes and support. this community is bipolar sometimes.

The Ellimiist2 votes

I downvoted cuz as an actual dota player I know chat banned players just spam "WELL PLAYED" 600 times everytime someone dies, having practically the effect of allowing them to rage while chat banned.

L2D tyler11 votes

to be fair to me, I not only talked about being able to say gg, i talked about an entirely new idea of the chat wheel

ZGM Dazzling1 votes

As someone who is on a chat restriction more often then not, like seriously i'm on a 40 game chat restriction right now, I would really love something like this. It will solve the problem of getting reported for failing to communicate with team while your on a chat restriction. -_________- Why am i getting chat restrictions during my chat restrictions like what can i even possibly be doing . @@

Penta Penguin1 votes

get banned

TNHA Baritone1 votes

I think Riot should show that a person is chat banned to his/ her teamates so they know

RavenMagus1 votes

While the chat wheel is a really cool thing, it doesn't solve what you're looking to solve. Someone who's chat banned but has access to the chat wheel will use it in equally annoying ways (spamming Need Wards, for instance, or using "Well Played" or "GG" when a teammate dies).

L2D tyler11 votes

That could be true, maybe it could have a limit similar to the ping system. Thanks for the feedback, this is my first major post.

Slythyn the Sly1 votes

Maybe there could be a limit like there are on pings, just a little bit more strict.

FearEngineer1 votes

Chat ban just makes me more irritated with people.

Waaaow1 votes

You think no one has ever played Dota2 here?

L2D tyler11 votes

no, i jus tthought this would be a good thing for riot to implement in league ^_^

Cronofuge1 votes

I'm playing rather well then make ONE mistake and die |>Good game. Well played |>Good game. Well played |>Good game. Well played |>Good game. Well played

Yeah thanks. My personal favorite is when my somebody calls for a push and my friend puts in ye olde |>Split up and farm.

The Aqua Snake1 votes

The Dota 2 chat wheel is what gave Riot the Idea to do their own version of it by attaching it to the ping system which was a good idea (Basically a repackaged chat wheel).

They may as well go all the way and copy the chat wheel in its entirety.

Smart Kitty1 votes

Though it's not exactly the same, it reminds me of quick chat from Runescape. You could use it even if you were muted. It allowed me to still communicate in games like clan wars and and stuff, and was really helpful.

Krigjer1 votes

I'd rather have a way to completely disable pings, and not just turn the volume down.

When I'm already at 1/3 health and running away from the threat, I don't need 'be careful! retreat!' pings clogging up my chat. People spam them and then wonder why I get frustrated.

L2D tyler11 votes

Wow! this blew up, was not expecting that! For everyone who was for it, lets get your friends talking about it, get their friends talking about it, lets get this idea to RIOT!! Thank you all and I cannot wait to see where this journey takes us

N30NP4NDA1 votes

Bro, its DotA.

Rand0mH3r0X1 votes

To complicated. You're too salty. I don't want you gg at me dying for fun.

L2D tyler11 votes

ok man, thanks for feeback. Try and keep it constructive tho!

iainB851 votes

Riot should put in a chat wheel then just disable chatting all together, Hearthstone style.

It'll never happen, but think of how much less toxic people would be if they didn't have the ability to chat and get people all upset about it.
