@Meddler @RiotRepertoir answer 2 things about soraka

There's a few things I don't like about Soraka's kit and I would like to talk about one of those things here. Basically her mana costs are absurd for a support. Back in the day, her Q was basically anivia's ult and her E was free to cast. That means it made sense back then for it to be so expensive because it was anivia's ult once you got rylai's and to offset it's mana burden you could still E as much as you liked.

Move forward to today and her Q still costs 30/mana a second with 40% cdr, her W costs another 33, and her E costs a measly 7... but that's still a peak mana burn rate of 70 mana a second if you are firing off all your skills. That's bloody huge for even a laner, much less a support. The heavy costs of her Q also make it harder for her to justify leveling it early and having the more aggressive playstyle that she was intended to post rework. Now if it did more damage I wouldn't complain, but it's kind of weak as it is. So could you guys look into at least reducing the mana costs or buffing the damage? It's not like it's that hard to dodge it for the other team, esp at max range.

FWIW, most people max the spell that is supposed to be the engine that drives her kit last. That makes me think it's the weakest thing in her kit and part of me wants to blame it on the costs and lack of damage. I mean she's near the last in damage dealt for supports and that's because it's next to impossible to go aggressive on her. I used to play the old soraka as a pretty aggressive support back in S3 and S4. That's something that's killing me about her rework. She was supposed to be more active in laning but I feel like she's about as passive as before because despite being a /mage she can't get in there and mix it up like she used to. Because you can only self heal once every 10 seconds at most and you have to spend life to keep the adc alive you are really penalized hard for trading in bot. If you slap me enough for playing her aggressive I'm just not going to play her that way (or at all really which is why I stopped maining Soraka and started playing Sona support more).

I mean every time I take damage, that's less health I have to heal my ADC. The most rational thing to do now is to not expose yourself to damage so you have that resource to heal your ADC. Based on the face people aren't leveling their Qs and that playing passively keeps your HP bar full, logically she's encouraged to play as passively or more passively than before. I can't afford mana items early because as the support you have to rush sightstone where I feel a tear is the first thing she should buy based on her kit and not her laning role.

I really miss the soraka that wanted to get in there and fight, the soraka that many people never saw in her, and I just don't feel like I can do that anymore. Her rework was supposed to make her less passive and I find it really frustrating that I have to play her more passively than I used to.

The other thing I'd like to bring up is her bananas. As iconic as they are, they aren't a part of her kit nor is there anything in it to encourage her to chuck them at foes with a vengeance. While she'd probably be a great lichbane user, that's not bought on her at all; people build her full support and the only AP item they get on her on average is Censor. Is there anything you guys can do to make her bananas a part of her kit? Like by leveling her W you get a little health back on hit (scales on AP) or something. Maybe mana back so can level your Q and be more aggressive. Maybe both?

Soraka main here, at least, insofar as one can have a main in normal solo queue...

First, I definitely agree with you that her mage secondary is, at best, a surprise pick that relies on its unexpected nature over any inherent mechanical advantage to work in a lane. At worst, it's a troll pick. I would absolutely love it for her mage secondary to have some real support beyond "pray your enemy is foolish enough to walk into a zone smaller than Karthus' Q."

That said, I'm not sure what the best plan is, because in terms of win rate, counterplay, and skill ceilings she's actually in a pretty good place at the moment. She's just not as versatile as I'd like, and she's got some pretty major failings on the secondary aspects of her kit.

  • If you reduce her Q's mana cost, you drastically increase her lane sustain. Her lane sustain is already very good, as both a solo laner and as a support, and making the one element that enemies can use to force her out of lane (besides all-in engages, that is) harder to do isn't going to make for a healthier character.
  • Buffing her Q's damage to a level that would make it work for a mage would require massively overbuffing it for her status as a high-sustain support.
  • Increasing her banana damage (to make her an AA/mage hybrid, sort of like Lux) is definitely an option, and honestly a pretty good one. I personally don't like being forced to stop casting to AA things as a mage, but that's more of a personal preference deal than any fundamental flaw with that option. Do bear in mind that any kind of bonus AA damage is going to have to be tempered by her ludicrously high lane sustain - it's dangerous to the game to have a champion that can both keep a carry up indefinitely while also providing poke pressure.

A lot of these issues stem from the limitations on itemization: If she scales well enough to be a mage, she's overpowered as a support with the kit she has. If you nerf her support kit to keep her power in check, she loses a lot of her identity, and ends up just played as a self-sustaining midlane mage.

Personally, I think the best solution is to give her a rework-lite. Right now, thematically, she's a healer champion that sacrifices her life for her teammates. This is a totally awesome theme and I absolutely love playing it. That said, if she had two discrete build paths - one for a mage, and one for a support - then I think she'd be a lot more interesting to play.

What if her W, instead of sacrificing 10% of her maximum health to heal somebody for an AP-scaling amount, simply gave a percentage of her maximum health to her ally (or, if the math doesn't work for that, just have her W scale with bonus health instead of AP). She'd need some adjustments to keep her competitive, obviously, but they wouldn't be a complete thematic change.

  • Her passive could remain unchanged.
  • Q would have its damage scale with AP as if she was a mage: Low base damage, high ratio that increases with rank. Its mana cost would start low and ramp up quickly with rank.
  • W would have its active healing scale with her total health, and its passive healing scale strongly with bonus health and weakly with AP.
  • E would have its damage scale with AP. You don't really use it for its damage, anyway. If you wanted to add a passive that caused her autoattacks to deal extra AP-scaling damage in some fashion, that might help diversify her mage play somewhat.
  • R would scale with both AP and bonus health, because it sucks having an ultimate that does nothing when you push it.

Adjust it so she has a small base mana pool but a large growth stat, and suddenly you have a support Soraka that builds health, maxes W first, and pokes with a cheap and weak Q to sustain along with a mage Soraka that builds AP and maybe mana regen (to fuel the early expense of the maxed Q at small mana pool sizes).

First of all, thanks for responding.

Right. Back in S3 and early S4 before she became toxic she was a viable niche mage. The problem is her S4 rework turned her into a champ that half the players were using as a solo-lane bully and the other half of her players where playing her super passively. I feel like in her current state, she's too close to that passive champ who can't solo and who can't be aggressive at all. While it's possible to hit a Q, your Qs are too expensive and do too little damage for their cost.

That said, I'm not sure what the best plan is, because in terms of win rate, counterplay, and skill ceilings she's actually in a pretty good place at the moment.

Yes, that's the worst part. For people who liked the less passive version, she's pretty bad right now. For everyone else, the numbers suggest she's in a good spot. I think the fact that she has one of the lowest damage dealt and death rates of all supports in plat+ means riot's rework failed at the intended purpose even if the numbers are good. One of the other things is they wanted her to be pickable in the LCS. Right now, no one is picking her in the LCS. That's another thing I think failed. So I want to say is it depends on the metrics you are using when you judge her. There are some that are good, some that are bad.

If you reduce her Q's mana cost, you drastically increase her lane sustain. Her lane sustain is already very good, as both a solo laner and as a support, and making the one element that enemies can use to force her out of lane (besides all-in engages, that is) harder to do isn't going to make for a healthier character.

I'm not going to lie about my feelings when I say I think that putting her lane sustain into her Q was a wonky idea at best. I can see they wanted to encourage aggression but I think overall it didn't work out. I agree something will need to be done about the sustain if they did something with the mana cost. Still, I'm not exactly thrilled riot linked her Q and her W like they did.

*Buffing her Q's damage to a level that would make it work for a mage would require massively overbuffing it for her status as a high-sustain support.

I'm not sure what kind of support soraka is supposed to be. Her W is what people focus on, but her Q drives her kit. Based on the kit and not the lane, she feels like someone who's meant to be artillery who zones you and works via sieging/poking. I see her W is less about high sustain so much and more about maintaining the siege and letting your poke comp work against the other team's poke comp. She's got sustain, but the sustain is dependent on her Q. Her Q is a mage's spell and that's the heart of her kit.

A lot of these issues stem from the limitations on itemization: If she scales well enough to be a mage, she's overpowered as a support with the kit she has. If you nerf her support kit to keep her power in check, she loses a lot of her identity, and ends up just played as a self-sustaining midlane mage.

Right. But thanks to her lane, she's largely stuck using the worst items for her kit. I feel like she's meant to be a utility mage with healing more than a pure support or a pure mid. However based on the kit and how it works, it's numbers are wrong for a mid and the mechanics and lane realities are wrong for the support riot wanted out of her.

If riot got rid of the heal on her Q and let her self heal from her W (separate them completely like it was originally) I think the sustain issues you are talking about go away. The reason she went toxic in season 4 is because riot took away her big weakness: she's always been weaker to hard engages and all ins, but they linked her Q to her W and that mitigated that weakness a lot while letting her shove lanes. That's why she's got sustain on her Q now (and why it has the mana cost it does) they rebuilt her around what made her toxic to begin with in her S4 kit. They didn't want her to be a AoE sustained damage mage but they didn't want her to be passive either. However in reworking her heal, they opted to keep the more passive/reactive version of soraka.

Personally, I think the best solution is to give her a rework-lite. Right now, thematically, she's a healer champion that sacrifices her life for her teammates. This is a totally awesome theme and I absolutely love playing it.

This is her new theme. She didn't always have the infuse heal from GW. Her heal used to be a long cool down and had a pretty large armor buff on it. Some people love the new version, some people hate it. I mean aside from the HA map, her healing ability is great if you can get over the health cost and hit her Qs.

I'm going to be honest here. After seeing both versions of soraka I can get why some people like the martyr healer. She heals a ton of damage now. However I don't think her kit is ever going to be right. I feel like when riot did the martyr champ, they tried to create a new champ, but in a way soraka is still too soraka. They kept her identifiable (I can still use her well enough) but I think the new heal needed something all of its own to support it. Riot wants her to be a martyr healer ATM, but she still wants to be the old Soraka in order or make the new idea work and to fulfill riot's stated goals. I mean I look at that kit and it's begging me to spam Qs and drive the other team under tower.

That said, if she had two discrete build paths - one for a mage, and one for a support - then I think she'd be a lot more interesting to play.

One thing I really wanted riot to do for her rework was to basically split her in to two champs. As in make a new champ based on one half and turn soraka into the other. They really needed someone based just on the martyr theme and reworked completely around that and they needed someone else based on the old soraka but not as toxic: a utility mage/healer who's not really a pure support healer or a pure mid.

I'm really not sure if the two paths idea would work properly, but I'd be happy to see riot try it.

I'm not sure riot would do this for one reason: they don't want her to build health anymore. No building health was something they explicitly talked about in the rework. I'm not sure if they are willing to relent on that or not.

E would have its damage scale with AP. You don't really use it for its damage, anyway. If you wanted to add a passive that caused her autoattacks to deal extra AP-scaling damage in some fashion, that might help diversify her mage play somewhat.

That's one thing I don't like about the new kit. In the old kit her E was free and once you got a lichbane you had a great E-AA combo poke that silenced and damaged. The CD wasn't bad once you got CDR either... 6-8 seconds I think. I'd start with E in most games as a support just for that trading power I got from it. The new E is different. You are right that it isn't for damage, but sadly it's too easy to walk out of it for it to be a good CC spell either. Right now it's basically a shut up Katarina's ult spell. I'm not sure the hard CC really belongs in soraka's kit either. The silence yes, but the root just doesn't feel right on her.

She needs some kind of zoning tool. Having a champion with no CC, no mobility, and no defensive tools would be far too easy to kill. Zhonyas would be far more mandatory than it already is, and I despise how common that item is already. If she isn't going to have CC on her E, then she needs something on her Q or a replacement on her E, otherwise she loses a lot of skill ceiling in addition to becoming far too one-dimensional and easy to counter.

I'm not sure riot would do this for one reason: they don't want her to build health anymore. No building health was something they explicitly talked about in the rework. I'm not sure if they are willing to relent on that or not.

That's fair. I think they're concerned (and legitimately so, in my opinion) about her becoming too hard to kill. If her kit offers strong healing like it does now, having a lot of tankiness on it can lead to some pretty unhealthy gameplay. I mean, remember early in her rework when her passive actually reduced her armor and her MR in order to increase her AP?

Despite that, I still feel that avoiding large health pools on her is a relic of when she didn't use her health to fuel her abilities, and when she was far tankier innately than she is today.

Shrug!

Mmm, that's possible. I'm not sure that League needs another utility-focused support mage - we just got Bard and Tahm after all - but there might be room down the road.

As I understand it, though, the martyr theme came about as a byproduct of needing to give her healing a cost that wasn't so easy to counter as mana and they realized that it fit well with Soraka's "mortal goddess" story background. The core issue - that healers are inherently toxic in games designed like League - remains, and the only reason it's remotely fixed on Soraka is because she really doesn't heal that much; she just moves damage around. She takes damage from her carry, and then she hands it back to the enemies that dished it out via landing her Q.

The proposal of "why not just get rid of the middleman and have her literally give her life to her carry" was, to me, just a logical extension of what they've already done... with the added side effect of not making me hate myself every time I'm forced to buy a support item with bonus health on it because it trashes my efficiency.

I'm going to be honest here. After seeing both versions of soraka I can get why some people like the martyr healer. She heals a ton of damage now. Ah; I only played her briefly pre-rework. I liked her, but she was a bit undertuned (for balance reasons) and it was a bit rough to work with her as a result, so I spent more time playing Kayle instead. To me, the post rework Soraka is the only one I've really known.

Tell me about it! You want armor? You get bonus health. You want support items? Hope you like being overbudget on CDR, plus bonus health. You want AP items? They're too expensive for your support budget and a ton of them have bonus health to boot. You want magic resist? Hope you like bonus health!

This is really my motivation for asking for a mini-rework on her. I hate going to the shop, buying a mandatory support item (hi, sightstone) and feeling like I've nerfed myself for doing it.

I'm not sure what kind of support soraka is supposed to be. Her W is what people focus on, but her Q drives her kit. Based on the kit and not the lane, she feels like someone who's meant to be artillery who zones you and works via sieging/poking. She's got sustain, but the sustain is dependent on her Q. Her Q is a mage's spell and that's the heart of her kit.

Honestly, I think it's the interaction between her Q and her W that drives her kit. Without her W, her Q is just a really really bad version of Karthus' signature spell. Without her Q, her W is basically an extra health pool for her carry. Her E, on the other hand, feels tacked on to make her useful in teamfights and to make Soraka players feel like they have a snowball's chance in hell to live through an ambush.

Mmm. I'll be honest, I didn't give it a ton of thought initially, but now that you point it out, I can definitely see some of the issues. Short of redoing her Q and E entirely, though, I'm not sure I see a good way to address the issue.

Right. Back in S3 and early S4 before she became toxic she was a viable niche mage. The problem is her S4 rework turned her into a champ that half the players were using as a solo-lane bully and the other half of her players where playing her super passively. While it's possible to hit a Q, your Qs are too expensive and do too little damage for their cost.

I actually had a great match versus Ryze the other day in top lane. I ran OOM first, but Ryze had no sustain, and her Q hits remarkably hard early game due to the high base damage. He ended up getting forced out of lane too often to farm reliably. Late game I fell off hard, though, since her ratios are garbage as a support.

That's sort of why I wanted to see her changed up a bit; if her support-factor scaled with health and her mage-factor scaled with AP I think she'd be an interesting selection.

First of all, thanks for responding. Hey, I love talking this stuff over! I do tank theorycrafting over on WoW; these sorts of discussions are my bread and butter ;)
