How do you build AP bruisers?

When I see AD fighters, it's a pretty straightforward build of things like triforce or BC and then resistance items. But whenever I see AP bruisers I see them building full AP and often lacking in the resistances department.

Is that how you're supposed to build AP bruisers? No big defensive items like deadmans?

item 3111 item 3116 item 3027 item 3157 item 3001 and finish off with a tanky item that fills out what you need.

What's an AP bruiser?

Mordekaiser, Rumble, Diana, mainly melee fighters who scale with AP.

They are rather rare.

Morde, Rumble, and Diana rarely build defensive items outside of Health/AP items aka item 3116

Diana doesn't even build that :P

Depends on if they have any slows/cc in their kit, cho gath for example has his slow/knockup and silence, he can usually get away w/ building item 3027 item 3151 item 3089 and rounding the build out with tank items.

Occasionally I see something like Spirit Visage if it's Swain or something, but generally the idea is stacking all of the AP + Health or AP + armor / MR items.

You can go pen bruisers, ROA, Liandry's, and Void Staff. Its not a lot of AP, but amount of pen you get makes it really hurt anyone who doesn't prioritize MR. After you pick up these items, you can go for Zhonya's, Abyssal Scepter, Spirit Visage, etc picking up some CDR and resists.

Or you could go for a more tanky build, only picking up a ROA and Deathcap, then just building resists.

Typically you start item 3027, and maybe item 3040, if you need the mana (depending on the champion and build, you'll get a LOT of AP from this, too). item 3001 and item 3157 will give you MR and armor, respectively, plus CDR and AP (although the active on Zhonya's might be useless, unless you're Diana). Finish with whatever items suit your champion, one of which giving a tank stat: item 3146, item 3091, item 3026, item 3060, item 3151, item 3116, or any generic tank item will help. (Items that build from item 3024 will give lots of mana, meaning more AP!)

item 3089 is useless, as you won't have enough AP for its passive to help a lot (although, obviously, item 3090 is an amazing item), and boots are for wimps. Unless you actually really need them, that is.
