There's too much burst in this game and not enough steroids

Here's a feeling that I've been getting in LoL. It seems to me that burst damage skills (whether they be low or high damage) are becoming far more prominent than auto-attack oriented steroids and are starting to render them almost obsolete.

Instant-damage skills give a far better effort->reward ratio than traditional steroids, not to mention they are far safer to use. It used to be that only mages had huge amounts of burst, and they still do, but the problem is that the champions who lie in between the autoattackers and the mages are starting to get quite a bit of both worlds. Team fights in this game have evolved into a game of alpha strikes (not, not the Master Yi skill), about which team manages to push buttons first, which team manages to disable the other team long enough so they can push all their buttons first, etc. It's gotten to the point where a strong source of sustained damage, like from your AD carry, is more of a bonus rather than the most important thing in any team fight. It used to be you couldn't really kill an entire team like this (except in the aptly named "AoE meta" a long long time ago), and if you tried you probably got cleaned up by their AD carries and tanks, and whoever else was left over.

What you just read is a post from 2012, before the season 3 assassin meta... funny, isn't it? Thoughts? Is history repeating itself or has this game been around long enough that players are re-painting past seasons with nostalgia?

I was afraid that if I copied too much nobody would read it to the end... :P

Calling it burst is inaccurate. Some champion have burst others have sustained damage, but the bigger issues comes from a decreasing time to kill, which has actually been declining for years.

The low time to kill in the game has forced it into a state which means a single mistakes is often enough to make you lose the game or lane. There is no ebb and flow anymore in a fight, because the average time to kill has gone below the average CD of a basic ability.
