Riot should hire pros for their balance team

My suggestion is simple: I believe that the overall quality of patches could be greatly improved if Riot hired pro players (or former pros) for their balance team.

I converted to League of Legends after playing Magic: The Gathering for several years. In a trading card game, the penalties for creating an unbalanced product are very severe, as you can't un-print cards. The only option is to ban cards completely (that people have potentially spent as much as $50-100 on, and often bought multiples). However, in the most commonly played format (Standard), only two cards have been banned since 2007. There are a lot of reasons why they do such a good job (overall) in creating balanced sets, but one of the main ones is that they hire game developers straight from the top levels of the pro scene. By hiring highly talented developers who will intuitively find the optimal way to play the game (more often than not), the development team is able to quickly determine where the set needs re-balancing.

I don't think that Riot's development team should consist only of former pros. There are a lot of concerns besides achieving perfect balance--for example, creating champions who are fun or open up unique play or counterplay. But I believe that hiring as few as two developers who can play League of Legends at a professional level would allow Riot to gauge the impact of their patch decisions much more accurately and to achieve their design goals more quickly. (It'd be great to have ten, honestly, but that's probably not financially defensible, at least for full-time employees.)

Response to first few comments: The idea is that once hired by Riot, pros would no longer be eligible for competitive play. (This is what they do in Magic as well.) Also, I think that the offer of a job on the Riot development team might be very attractive for former pros who can no longer quite cut it at the top level.

Actually it's the opposite I think.

They should block off some advises and suggestions from pros.

I think you might be misunderstanding my point. I have added a paragraph to the post to address this. If you still disagree, oh well.

I tend to agree that pros are fitting for the position of balance since they after all, played the game to the very top so they should understand the game like the back of their hands.

However though the problem that concerns me is their tendency to sway public opinions while they're defending something. As long as they won't be the center of the balance team then I'm ok with them being the advisers or sidekicks.

On the other hand, we really need someone who is better with math analysis for the position of lead balancer.

I agree. That's why I think they should be part of the balance team, not the entire thing.

i think the idea here is that the pro players have much more game knowledge, know what champions are not balanced and how to fix them, the only downside would be if the pro player is bias or a one trick

I think the champion designers should be part of the balance team. It'll give them perspective on what is OP and what isn't... so that they won't make stupid ass broken champinos in the first place...

Also, the balance team and the pros don't seem to have a exact, concrete view of what that champion is suppose to be. (everyone plays a champion differently, so pro player X's perspective of anivia is slightly different from pro player Y's perspective of anivia). The designers should have a better understanding.

From what riot's doing, it really seems like the balance team's looking from our perspective, the players' (more specifically the pros'). That's wrong. They should be the ones who's standing above it all and looking at the whole picture. Instead of satisfying a certain set of players they should be appealing to as large of a set of players of possible. THAT is diversity. Riot's doing the exact opposite. By looking from say a Zed main's perspective, they'll be disregarding the non-AD mobile assassin mids. THAT is a niche. pro players form niches, therefore listening to pro players is a mistake.

I'm not saying balance the game only for pros...I'm saying hire players off the pro circuit to be one voice in balancing the game. My point is, I think they need to hire people who will understand the impact that their patches will have better than their current team, and former pros (who will be trained to keep in mind the good of the game as a whole) are perfect for that.
