How to make good support items

I've been giving a lot of thought to item 3504 item 3190 item 3107 item 3109 and what makes these items so problematic. The problem is that support items have become too focused on buffing and healing/shielding allies instead of buffing/healing/shielding the support. Supports are being picked base on what powerful active/passive their items grant the ADC instead of what they give the support. I suspect that even if we got nerfs for Ardent another item's passive/active will replace it because the focus is all on how to enhance the ADC. This is the cause of all the frustration for both support players and others that feel ADCs are too powerful.

Support items need to start making a move away from buffing and protecting the ADC (a little bit is okay but it's gone out of control) to buffing and enhancing the support. Powerful actives and passives are cool but when they overshadow the support's kit there is an issue and that is because the item's passive/active doesn't benefit the support very much compared to the ADC's benefit. I think a lot of power being granted to ADCs from the support items can be taken away in favor of buffing the support so that their kits can shine over the item.

Let's take an example:

item 3504 Is the big problem child of support items at this time. It is an item that has a huge portion of it's cost in the passive that grants AS and damage on hit. This item is a prime example of a bad item for a support's kit but a grand item for an ADC to get buffed from. Instead of the current passive we could take that power granted to the ADC and give more the the support like so:

Unique Passive: Whenever you heal or shield an ally your next ability does bonus X magic damage and refunds 5% of the current CDs on your abilities for each enemy champion hit.

Let's analyze this new passive. It grants power only to the support but only if their heal/shield their allies so it can't be abused in lane easily. It would be a wonderful item for enchanters as it makes them have to be aggressive to proc the damage and get the CDR so they become more engaged in combat. It isn't granting insane power to the ADC anymore so the item doesn't have to be balanced around how it effects another role. It enhances the enchanter's kit and not really anyone else. It would allow the entire kit of an enchanter to shine and not just their shields and heals. In short, it makes the champion better and is not just an OP OMG active/passive that ADC needs.

To sum up. We need more focus on buffing supports through items and not buffing ADCs. A good support item focuses on the support and not others. I would love to hear other's thoughts on this so pop in and lets talk it out. How do you think other items could be changed to buff the support more and not the ADC? How about Knight's Vow, Redemption or Locket? I have some ideas but I want to hear other's thoughts.

I think interactive buffs for adcs would be ok. I think the problem is hidden buffs like ardent or knight's vow don't give the enemy any space to react. For example, you can wait out a locket shield, but you can't wait out knight's vow or ardent (holy shit Janna and lulu shields last way too long).

That could certainly be an approach to support issues. I do believe some buffs for ADCs are in order but it's gotten a little out of control of late. I think we would still end up with one or two "superior" items if we continue to focus on buffing ADCs. Enchanter kits are already pretty geared towards buffing an ADC. If we want supports to truly have good itemization it needs to focus on improving the support's kit rather then granting huge buffs to ADCs. (As to janna and lulu their shield last a long time due to granting benefits while active.)

I don't think there is anything wrong with support items. They should be impact-full - you are just used to support being boring and more or less considered a punishment for not getting a high pick order on the team. Find something else to complain about.

Kind of obvious you didn't read the post. Maybe skimmed it but certainly did not read it through. I never once said that items were not impactful. Try reading first before being rude and accusing people of complaining.

I've found that on these boards, most people will not read a post thoroughly enough to comprehend it.

I agree with buffing supports instead of allies. But how will this work? What will keep solo laners from abusing these new items? Let's see your ideas on the other support items?

Sure thing. keep in mind I'm not a game designer so nailing exact numbers isn't my thing. I do like game theory though but that is more the mentality aspect.

If my proposed ardent changes makes mid lane Orianna, lulu, karma too powerful lowering the AP but increasing the bonus damage from passive would be a balancing factor. Without the AP the mid laner would struggle too much to compete and unless the jungler is 100% camped bot lane this would mean severe loses of CS and pressure in lane.

For Knight's Vow I would propose a similar trade. Take some of the buff from the ADC and give to the support. So change the passive to reduce damage by 8% (for melee only) but increase the healing the support receives to 16-20%. The bonus armor could also be played with so instead of 40 on the item and 20 armor from passive and how about reduce the armor to 30 on item and passive grants 40 to support and 1/2 that to adc. This allows a bigger gain for support tanks and makes the item weaker in solo lanes while also removing power from ADCs and granting more to support.

Redemption is an odd ball. It is literally some health with a big ol' active on it. It's good all around as long as you have the +%heal and shield power. This item is one that needs to be focused into either a warden item or an enchanter item. With the way it works it seems to me like an enchanter item. In this case the active needs to be reworked if we were to move power to the support because almost all the gold is channeled into that one active. If we were going to move power into the support the active needs to be hit to share that power. This one's tough because the item is literally defined by the active. If anything, I would reduce to AoE size but add more +%Shield and heal power to compensate for the more difficult to hit active. I might also suggest to remove the damage too in favor of an ability CD refund for each enemy hit instead. Like 10% CD refund for abilities on CD for each enemy champion hit. Either option would help the support more.

Locket is a bit easier, lower the shield power by like 20-30% but double for the caster. Increase the duration. I don't think it is terrible as a top lane item as the shield is balanced around health and can't be purchased early easily. By lowering the shield granted to others it could help make it less attractive to top laners but the cost efficiency still works for supports.

Any other support items you think could do with a bit more power in support and less into the adc? Personally I feel that item 3174 is one of the best designed items it just doesn't have the strength pull above other support items. It rewards supports attacking while rewarding with better healing. Honestly, I would love to be making this item all the time on enchanters.

If all you're doing is supporting yourself... are you really supporting anymore?
