Why support mains are disagreeing and why the support role is suffering

StoryDuck··107 votes·10,742 views

I want to get this out of the way, I am not looking for hand outs/buffs for supports. When I first started being a support main I was quite fine with my lack of gold income and having to play from a weaker state then the rest of the players. Would I like buffs to the support role? Well, yeah I am a support main. However, this is about why so few are playing support and why support mains are disagreeing about it.

Let's tackle why people are not playing the support role as much as other roles first.

I've been seeing a lot threads lately about how the support role is not popular and why. Some say they can't ward enough, others think it is a matter of items. A popular explanation is that they lost their ability to keep up with EXP due to the lose of the Inspiration mastery. I will admit I am a fan of this theory.

The short answer is that people want to feel empowered when they play LOL and they don't get that as much in the support role. It is not solely a matter of exp, items, gold, or abilities but rather the feeling that the player had a meaningful contribution. This is very easily fulfilled in the carry roles because you are defeating your enemy directly and you can more actively recognize your impact with KDA and seeing your enemies fall to your prowess. In the support role it is not as direct. You feel empowered when you make a clutch save of an ally or CC the enemy at just the right time so that others can shine with your mastery of timing and mechanics. This is unavoidable and the support role has and always will have less players in it because they don't get that direct satisfactions of being the DPS on the team killing everyone.

This is further complicated by factors like a lack of gold as it can feel bad to have to buy an item to help your ally like item 3222 instead of getting that item 3116 to make yourself stronger. When you are looking at the score board and see your items compared to the opponents it isn't hard to think "Damn, I can't fight anyone." This is often true and many players will not like this. It takes a special mind set to think "Hell yeah, I can save my ADC with this when it counts." instead of what was mentioned before. It is easier to find yourself empowered when you have the power and not just the power to help others.

EXP differences have risen and this also leads to problems with people wanting to be supports. Can you still be effective that far behind? Yes, but think about the message that sends to players that want to feel meaningful? I'm a support main and even I think it feels awful to be so far behind in levels. This makes it even harder to feel meaningful as it isn't hard to fall 3+ levels behind and become so squishy that single abilities can almost kill you. Also, your CC often comes from your levels and falling behind makes them feel weaker. It has become very hard to feel successful and meaningful as a support. It can be done (I'll get to that) but it is a lot harder.

As a support, being behind in gold and EXP makes it very hard to feel powerful in LOL. Add onto this how easy it is to snowball in solo-que and it is a pretty hard sell to make people want to play a support. Not only do you need to believe in your ability to help other more then your own power. You also need to keep the belief that you are impactful when you are so much weaker then other roles. This isn't easy for most people to see and that is why most players do not desire the support role.

Alright, now lets tackle why us supports can't seem to agree.

I have seen every explanation from a lack of EXP, too little gold, need more items, not enough control over warding, and a few other things too. Every time I see anything posted about the support role I also see a lot of disagreement. Some want more warding, some want more gold, some want more EXP and some think everything is fine. The reason for this is kind of what I stated earlier. You can play the support role in many different ways. However, not every way will work and sometimes certain styles do not work at all. The reason many supports think that everything is fine is because they currently have a play style in which they feel empowered. Whatever that style is they are thriving in the current meta.

There isn't one way to play this game. There are many. This is deeper then just being aggressive or passive. There are so many options for support that really it is quite amazing. Supports have never had so many options for them as they do now. They no longer have to be the sole provider of vision and they have quite a few unique build paths. Support champions are some of the most diverse champions in league of legends.

This cannot be explained easily because it comes down to individual style. Similar to how one jungler likes to start with Krugs first while another likes to start red buff first. Nothing wrong with either choice they just have different pathing and styles. One likes to farm it out for mid/late the other is looking for a level 2 gank and to apply early pressure. Another jungler might love to counter-jungle a lot more. It is the same for supports (and I imagine other roles too). Some players like having more control over their wards. Some like roaming a lot to pressure other lanes. Some are content to sit in lane to insure their ADC is getting nice and fat with CS. The play style even differs when out of the laning phase and there are really a lot of choices when you think about it.

I believe there are certain styles that are just not working and people can't agree because there are other styles that are working. However, if our goal is to bring in more people to the support role we should be making sure that all play styles are working because it is that diversity that will help other players feel empowered in the role. It isn't that a lack of EXP is the problem, it is that it is one problem of many. It isn't that lack of warding control is a problem, it is one problem of many. It isn't that the role is perfect either, there is a reason that many support mains are upset, it is because their play style is being hurt. If your style is working that is great! However, that doesn't mean people want to play the exact way you do. If we want more people to play support then the more styles and ways we can play the better. I don't think there is a one size fits all style, but I think with the limitations currently on supports that there are a lot fewer ways to play as a support then there used to be.

EDIT: Moved top two paragraphs down into middle. People were getting too held up on the quick examples given and trying to defend why X, Y, Z is making support weak/strong. Not quite the focus of the post. This isn't about buffing support this is about drawing players to the support role and why support mains can't agree.

The tl;dr is pretty much what you said in the middle of your post. Most people see the support role as "I'm not supposed to cs/take kills, just supposed to ward and save the real carries (who are probably dumb enough to get themselves killed regardless of what I do)."

My beef with the role is I can set up all the vision and all the plays in the world, but I'm still relying on my carries to follow through and do the damage. Much easier to win a game as a competent carry with a mediocre support than it is to win a game as a competent support with a mediocre carry. If your trash adc gets caught out late game, you're probably not going to win a 4v5. If your trash support gets caught out late game, you still have a chance of winning a 4v5 if you play your cards right.

It is the role of the support to support the team. A well placed Blitzcrank hook would dramatically change a teamfight regardless of how good your ADC is. Blitz is also a great example of feeling empowered. When you land that hook you know you are being impactful, when you miss that hook you feel awful. However, the really good blitz players rarely use their hooks except when they know they will hit with it as the threat of just having it makes an impact. This is a hard concept to understand for many players that CC is scary and when you use it correctly you will turn a teamfight. It is just really hard to feel that with many supports at this time.

There are a lot of things that could help empower a support, hell, even adding a score on the end game screen that says how much damage you shielded/prevented or amount of time you CC'ed an enemy could help. It is more an image problem then a mechanical one. It is why I think that the lower levels and lack of EXP is really hindering players from wanting to be a support. It's hard to see a role consistantly 3+ levels down and say "I want me some of that."

This. By design a Support is only as good as the rest of the team. Some of my favorite supports are the ones where I also get to build dmg or otherwise just do a shitton of dmg (Gragas, Illaoi, Karma).

CC aggressive supps are awesome too, but if your team refuses to go in or are otherwise inattentive/scared then your hard work will mean nothing.

I agree with this one for sure. Supports like Sona and Raka lose their fun quick in game. Braum "can" do cool stuff like jump to an ally into an ult but otherwise kinda dull. Why play them if I can play Annie or VelKoz and dish out damage while filling the support role. Or Karma/Lulu whole have great utility AND decent damage. Or the ever popular Thresh who has a LeeSin sized kit to do stuff with. Honorable mention to my favorite Leona that I can dive and lock shit down with. That list makes it look like there's plenty of supports to have fun with but it really comes down to a pick one of two when you try to work with your team. 2 tanks, 2 utility mages with decent damage, or 2 somewhat selfish ap mages. Sure some have a blast trolling the enemy with disruption from Janna tornadoes or love that 1 hook wonder fantasy Blitz. But overall supports are very binary. Throw snares with Morg and uses you shield on teammates. Either QW or WQ with alistar. Then hope it was good enough to matter because your ignorable for the next ten seconds.

Basically the fun ones ,in my eyes, are the ones that can constantly do stuff throughout a fight or even when there isn't a fight (Collect souls, wander for chimes, scout, be a treat due to presence, etc).

As much as the mini game new champions were getting a little annoying, I think they're needed most for supports. Something to keep them busy since they can't farm or fight.

StoryDuck3 votes

I like that idea at the end. More mini-games for supports. That could be a real way to attract more players to the support role.

Disagree. I play Bard, Tahm and Vel'koz and none of them is gated by their team. As Bard you can just roam and get early kills on mid/top lane with R, basically winning that lane Tahm is usually front line, soaking and dealing great amounts of damage. Also disabling enemies or saving allies. Vel'koz is the support i carry most with, he's just ridiculously powerful even with low income and can single handedly obliterate people past level 6.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Roaming relies on there being some place to roam to. I find this to be a thing that people forget a lot. If you want a successful roam then you need to rely on your team having roamable lanes. A good Bard ult means nothing if your team does not capitolize on it. Once again, you rely on your team.

Being a fatass dmg soak as Tahm as nice but you aren't going to be able to do shit unless your team is behind you. Pulling asses out of the fire is nice, but it means nothing if your team isn't using those opportunities to do better (or if you are salvaging bad engages or horrible positioning).

I can see this if you picked up some kills for gold or are catching people who seem completely unable to dodge skillshots (or you are just simply outplaying them by that much).

Verdade1 votes

Sure, you rely on them, but so does basically every champion. Even fed Yi can't do a thing against 5 people. What i meant is you enable plays. Like... Zed on my team can't kill enemy Lux because she plays very safe, but he needs to snowball. Shyvanna in jungle can't do much because they have no CC, so i roam up to mid as Bard, and i ult her. She either flashes or she gets caught and killed. Both scenarios are very good for us. Also Bard enables 2v2 tower dives, something that is otherwise unthinkable...

As a Tahm i usually get boots->sightstone->sunfire. He's very good at dueling with early sunfire, and can easily duel basically any top laner easily. Also his R enables plays pretty well.

Vel is just... he's completely different from anything in league. Huge early power spikes, able to delete people past level 6 alone... stalls games more than Ziggs and Viktor combined, huge teamfight presence... im just in love with him. You just have to be extra careful and he requires very good positioning. I won many lost games with him, including 4v5s, games with 0/20 teamscores etc. He has just one huge weakness. Your team will usually rely on your damage in late-game, but they still need your wards. So you either ward alone and hope you don't get picked or bring your team with you...

Tobias Brackner1 votes

See this is the thing though, I feel that Supp has (in large) a harder gate on effectiveness. Yi can kill 5 people if his team is with him and just serving as distraction.

Your description of Vel supp makes me wonder how often you get this effect since it seems to me that you are playing with poke comps, get fed, or have a non-functional mid.

" stalls games more than Ziggs and Viktor combined" I really doubt this since he has one spell to clear a minion wave with and if you are supp you are gonna have a hard time getting it to deal enough dmg to one-shot a wave like Vik or Ziggs.

Verdade2 votes

Im currently at 67% win rate with Ve'koz in ranked, 5.4/4.3/9.1 KDA in last ~20 games with him.

Im not picking him every game but he's my most played champion in rankeds... He's works pretty well with any type of mid champion... If you have AD, melee or short range mid like Talon, Akali, Katarina, Zed, Fizz, Ahri, Swain etc. he's perfect backline damage dealer. With ADC or long-range mid (Xerath, Corki, Jhin) you turn team into poke/pick/siege teamcomp.

As i said, he's extremely good in AD heavy teamcomps... as for lane ADC synergy, he has 2 main options: go poke or burst. Same build, just different skill and item order. This choice depends on your ADC and enemy bot lane, but basically sustain lanes are weak to burst, tanky/engage lanes are weak to poke. ADCs like Jhin, MF, Varus and Ez work very well with poke, while Tristana, Vayne, Graves work better with burst. Corki/Lucian/Jinx work with both very well, but i have to say, Varus/Jhin + Vel'koz is the most oppresive and overwhelming lane EVER. As for stalling, he's really good at it. Viktor and Ziggs can clear waves very quickly too, but here's the thing. They have to use their zoning/poke abilities to clear the wave. Viktor without Laser/Ziggs without Q/minefield isn't going to stop anyone. Meanwhile Vel'koz can't really clear wave in single ability (but hey, W has 2 charges, and double W clears everything easily) but his entire zone/poke/teamfight capabilities remain intact. Q if they get too close (lol at 1200+ range being too close), E to disrupt wannabe engages, R for full blown teamfights.

Believe me, nobody wants to get hit by Vel's Q in mid/late game. It takes like 1/3 off squishy's HP, applies 70% slow for few seconds... it's very hard to predict and it's very spammable thanks to its CD and mana cost.

Edit: He's in my opinion support with highest mechanical skill requirements, both skill floor and cap... And you need good decision making and positioning, because your team will rely on you more than on usual support. You can't afford to die at 35th minute in junge while warding...

Tobias Brackner1 votes

So essentially you wind up playing him like a carry and just overwhelm the enemy team with dmg. I dig that but I will also say that ~20 game is a pretty poor sample size. It's sounding like you have having some team-fight centric comps and I can see his ult bein really good for that along w/ his other cc to do picks.

I still disagree with the stalling thing because Ziggs and Vik has short enough cooldowns on their wave clear and I wanna say they can do it at a farther range than Vel. They also have an easier time clearing waves that are in an arc formation.

Verdade2 votes

67% W/L is in total rankeds as Vel'koz, which means like 100+ games. Just KDA is with that 20 game sample. If i picked him in every ranked, win rate would be considerably lower, you need to look at teamcomp.

Yeah, i agree he has little bit problem clearing huge balls of minions - W is just not wide enough for that, but it's excellent for lined up minions. Also remember, Vel'koz is support, so you possibly have waveclear from other lanes... it's just very rare to get waveclear and ability to defend turrets this well from a support

I have to disagree with you. I've been steadily climbing up the ranked ladder playing only support. With items such as item 3060 and item 3512 on your support you can create enormous amounts of map pressure where ever you want it. The only thing I find lacking in the support role is I would like an announcement when I save someones bacon. People like to play carries because they get to hear 'double kill, triple kill', meanwhile it's all but ignored when I chain all my abilities to save the out of position carry 3x in a row. I think the role would be played more if the players felt like they got some sort of recognition.

StoryDuck5 votes

It would be amazing to see, Ally saved. I would however settle for getting some stats at the end game score screen like Amount of damage shielded or amount of time enemy is CC'ed. Supports have a damaged image right now. I do believe this can be tied to EXP partly because when players continually see a role 3+ levels lower it sends the message "I'm weak, because I support." Us support mains know otherwise.

BigSquirrell11 votes

I think the problem is how little attention the supports get for their plays more than anything. I don't mean supports are constantly getting shit on for making a minor mistake or something like some people have been talking about, and I also don't mean that supports should be getting pats on the back for every little thing they do right. I mean that what a lot of the what the role does goes unnoticed. When a carry makes a good play, there's a get chance they get kills and someone on the team gives them at least a "gj," if not something more like a "holy shit, that was awesome." If a jungler has a good gank, a top laner has a good TP, or a mid roams at the right time, they get thanked and congratulated and the like. If a support roams -- in my experience, at least -- the best they can expect is to not get bitched at by the ADC for leaving lane for so long (even though it wasn't really long at all). With the exceptions of a few champions (Thresh Blitzcrank Bard and the like), a lot of what supports do isn't all that noticeable. Even with them, it's not always noticeable. Sure, a Thresh hook that catches the ADC and gets a kill is sometimes appreciated, but what about the Thresh ult that stopped Voli or Udyr from getting to your squishies with their insane move speed? Or the flay that knocked Katarina out of her ult or Sion out of his Q that would have destroyed your team?

As an example, I remember one time when I was playing Thresh and my ADC and I had been pushed to our second tower after the first went down, my ADC was almost dead, I was half health, and the enemy bot lane was about half health as well and coming in for the kill. I hooked the enemy ADC, ulted with one wall on the enemy ADC and the other on their support for the damage and slow, body blocked a couple skillshots including flashing in for one that would have killed my ADC, flaying the enemy ADC just into tower range for the aggro, weaving in autos when I could for a bit more damage, and using my lantern shield to save my ADC for the auto that would have killed him at the end. Meanwhile, my ADC runs back and forth under the tower, trying not to get auto'd while throwing out one or two of his own now and then, and when it was all over and my ADC ended up with a double kill and both of us were still alive, the rest of the team told the ADC good job and the ADC didn't say a damn thing about what I had done. Not so much as a "gj," despite the "ty" to the people telling him he did well for getting the double.

That one is kind of an extreme example, and I don't think I've ever made a play that good on any champion before or since, but it shows what I mean. Supports aren't getting the numbers, so unless there's a very obviously incredible hook, grab, binding, Tempered Fate, or something similar, no one cares, probably because no one notices. The enemy health bars aren't disappearing from the support's damage, there's not a "Penta Kill" banner with Leona's face in the middle, so it passes everyone by. And if the support DOES get a penta, people get pissed because supports shouldn't be getting kills (which I very much agree with: getting a kill when I play support makes me feel bad, even when I'm securing one that no one else on my team was close enough to get).

So the tl;dr, I guess, is that I think support isn't a popular role because it's not as glamorous as the others. Most people want to feel like they're the big swinging dick on the team, either by getting 27 kills in a match or being an unkillable monster that waddles through the enemy team and keeps the enemy carries from being able to do anything useful, and support just doesn't fulfill that fantasy.

Unless you go full damage support, of course. But please, stop that. The support shouldn't be 7/3/1 ever, much less when the ADC is 1/3/1. I'd rather wait an extra couple minutes to play with a proper support than have another bot lane Annie that goes Luden's first item and never buys a sightstone.

Edit: I realized I didn't totally give a solution here. I don't think people should have their collective danglers sucked on a regular basis for little things they do, but maybe if people took a second to tell their support that they noticed the contribution more often, support wouldn't feel like such a secondary and unappreciated role and more people would play it.

Tobias Brackner3 votes

I hear you on this. As supp Karma I can keep someone alive through shield spam and that is just a hard thing to notice. And it's the same thing if I'm supp Kayle and shred the whole team's resistances by 15%

BigSquirrell3 votes

I really think this might be the biggest problem. Sure, it's hard being down in levels and gold sometimes, but it's how invisible the support's contribution is that makes it less fun to play. I just got out of a game playing Sona and I had a bunch of 3-man ults that won us team fights, but after the game everyone said Fiora carried hard because she cleaned up a lot of the fights. It's not about having people sing the support's praises all the time, but it kinda feels bad to do so much and no one sees it. It's even hard to see it sometimes as the one doing it.

StoryDuck4 votes

It would certainly help if people noticed what amazing help supports provide. Do you think that scores at the end game screen like "Amount Shielded" or "Time enemy is CC'ed" would help with this?

Bonipherus9 votes

I think supports need more "big play" items in order to become a more appealing position. Lots of support items suck though and are in need of reworks or straight buffs. item 3504 is trash, item 3050 is not good anymore since marksmen usually get more than 50% crit now (the 20% ap also isn't exactly noticeable when you only have 50-100 ap. The best support item is item 3222 but I still hate getting it because the active is the only good thing about it and I don't really want or need those other stats 96% of the time.

item 3222 's mana regen passive is very good on mana-whore supports. item 3050 's still good, it does not HAVE to be thrown on your ADC if they have too much crit on their own. item 3504 has more limited uses because its power is tied to a champion's kit (must have relatively low CD heal or shield, preferably on more than 1 target), and is hard to appreciate because the buff is visually underwhelming, but it has its uses in Janna's "ultimate ADC buttbuddy" build. I also quite like it on Sona because of her AoE shield on W (plus the teams often have 2+ ADCs atm, making the item more valuable). The one thing I find with the item is the AP it provides to the owner is quite low.

StoryDuck3 votes

I love this. People have so many different opinions because their styles are so different. I personally think that item 3222 is not that great and good only in corner cases. But why? I mean, I got to plat without buying it often and many supports say it is a must have. This was because I liked playing a more aggressive style in which I added more damage to my team with items like item 3050 and item 3504. I felt more empowered when I was adding damage and peeling then when using Mikael's. It played to my style more. I would of course buy Mikael's when it was needed but those games often felt...off in some way.

You neglect to mention the way supports get treated by the team. Or how bad it feels with the new system to always be support. I am a mid and support main and sometimes I just want to get mid, instead of constantly supporting for adc's of varying skill level. One thing that I don't like is that supports are reliant on others to do well. This turns many people away as what you said, but it also punishes good supports with bad teammates.

What bugs me as support: Getting the blame for everything, when it's a duo lane and I'm not always at fault(I am sometimes, though). Sitting on my butt watching someone else play whack-a-mole. I'm there to play a game, not watch someone else kind of play a pseudo game.

I feel weak as a support because my job (to protect the ADC) is almost impossible to achieve success at in a meta with so many assassins and bruisers pumping such ludicrous amounts of damage in such short windows.

That's just me though.

As a player who often plays the role of support, I understand the frustration of not having much EXP, gold, or power. While I may not always have the most amount of gold in the game I try to stay positive even though I may not end up with the outcomes I want. The reason why I do love playing support though is because I find power in my cc. I started playing Janna, A LOT, around 2 months ago and she is honestly the reason why I love support so much now. She offers such a good kiting and defensive kit that I feel like my impact is large. Just knowing that I can be the difference between my team surviving a otherwise fatal blow or dying is such a confidence booster. YOu're right though we may not always get that instant feeling of power and gratification but after you know you saved your ADC or another one of your teammates you feel proud and accomplished. This good feeling makes me like playing support.

I know some of you may not relate to this because it is true in fact that we all have different play styles but finding out why you play support should be the thought that you have to carry throughout your game play. Just remember that a champion could be weak in one's eyes but over powered in the others.

Frankly the biggest problem with support right now is the exp. The meta for supports has shifted greatly, making high damage supports like Morgana and Zyra less relevant. This is because they have high base damage, assuming they have levels, which they will likely not be able to get. Right now, the best supports in most peoples opinions are Alistar for tanks and Janna for non tanks. Why is this? Because at level 6, you basically have all that you need. Alistars ult is such a huge damage reduction that if hes behind on levels, it wont even matter. As for Janna, you cant get to her at all because of her peel, so being excessively squishy isnt too much of a problem since her ult gives her a free pass. (Of course add the kitable meta helping Janna, but i firmly believe the exp disadvantage puts her in a more favourable position then basically any other support).

As someone who was an avid fan of support in S5 (not a main, like you, but I played quite a bit of support, especially when I just wanted a quick TB game), here are a few things I have noticed that support your points above. My four best supports are Sona, Morgana, Nami, and Leona, so those are the perspectives I have. I occasionally Lux support if my team really wants me to (I prefer Lux mid).

  • XP: AP supports are less enjoyable due to the XP difference; especially on Sona (who gains far more power from levels then from items; it's why she is so dangerous on ARAM, she doesn't need to die to buy items to keep up). I find that Nami and Morgana are less enjoyable as a result as well, though not as bad as Sona. Leona is the least affected by this, though she feels it until her W is maxed.

  • GOLD: I only run FQC at this point on AP supports; it is the only way I feel I have control over my gold income (and I usually out-earn talisman players on the opposing team). Still, the lack of gold really hurts on Sona (who builds expensive AP items), Morgana (that hourglass costs a fortune and man does she need it, especially being behind in levels, so her R actually has a chance of finishing). Leona can't seem to get tanky fast enough, but it isn't too terrible. Nami? She does alright without items as her kit is super versatile.

  • IMPACT: I see people running full murderball masteries and runes and building AP supports as mages (Lux, Sona, and Morgana especially). Some don't even bother with a gold item. I'll cover this in a bit. In S5, I have carried as Sona (and I don't mean KDA, I mean I was able to contribute so much that the enemy team would say things like 'man, you guys were lucky you had a Sona'). Now, I feel like playing Sona is a exercise in futility. First off, the sightstone changes suck; 3 wards on the standard sightstone forces you to back more often, which hurts XP (see my first point). Thus, you are punished for wanting to provide vision. Half the time I don't go sweeper until the laning phase is over just for the extra wards yellow trinket provides. Some of it is the new masteries, I used to run 4/5/21 on Sona in S5 (now I run her 0/18/12 w/ Windspeakers) which was super effective. The utility tree was really great for Sona with a little bit of offense and defense. The utility boosts just don't feel as impactful with the new masteries. That being said, I think Windspeakers is amazing for Sona and Nami (and I've even started using it on Morgana).

Now, let's talk about the "support carry" problem, and when I say carry, I mean a support building to get kills (and take CS from the ADC). There are two facets to this.

The first is that (and maybe it is just normals as I am unranked) DQ seems to put you with either amazing teammates or a pre-made of people who probably have blank keys on their keyboards but never bothered to learn to touch-type (the spelling in chat supports this theory).

As such, those in the support feel they need to defend themselves against the inevitable throw by their team. So, they pick Lux, Mage Sona, Mage Raka, Mage Morgy, Annie, Ahri, Syndra, or Brand and try to get fed so that if their team turns out to be terrible, they can try to triage the bad and win team fights. Playing a utility AP support is risky; if your team is competent it is way better than a full damage support but if your team is bad you are going to fall behind hard and possibly feed. With the full damage approach, if your team is good having more damage doesn't hurt and if your team is bad you have a chance of being a traditional carry.

This is also why heavy engage supports like Thresh, Naut, and Alistar are so popular; you don't have to carry as you have the tools to get even the worst player on your team a kill or two (or save them; and yes I know people seem allergic to clicking the lantern). They are safe picks as their kits and tanky nature can mitigate your teams mistakes as well as your own.

The second reason for the "support carry" mentality is the snowballing nature of games in S6. Early kills translate to unreasonable amounts of power in lane. Who is the first to die when the enemy ADC has a kill or two? That's right, the AP utility support (costing you XP and gold and setting you further and further behind, making you easier and easier to kill... it's the opposite of snowballing). However, if you come in full damage mage you are going to secure those early kills. Even if your aren't taking CS and intend to feed your ADC kills, if you secure a few early kills your ADC will be massively up in farm and levels relative to the enemy (while providing yourself the power to farm enemies).

You don't even have to kill the enemy ADC or support as a full damage "support" to get the snowball rolling; just poke them and force them to back. You get a nice XP and CS advantage over your opponents.

Again, let's look at tank supports. I pick Leona because she will enable me to keep my ADC from becoming food for the enemy (and with her hard engage, possibly get him or her a few early kills, starting that snowball ride). They are chosen not to snowball but to prevent the enemy from snowballing. Again, they are about safety.

I think, as a result of all this, we are seeing the support role turn into an extra mid or extra top depending on player preference and team needs. The perception is that such is a true 5 man while someone running a utility support feels like you are 4.5v5.0.

One final point: you mention some supports mains think things are fine. I feel they either are playing tank/engage supports, Janna (her kit has all the tools you need once you hit 6, XP and gold matter less), or are super good at Bard (Bard is the epitome of utility support, but he has mechanics that help him get XP when behind), or main kill supports (Annie, Lux, Bard, Ahri, Syndra).

NOTE: While I personally do not consider Ahri or Syndra even remotely viable supports, I have seen them often enough that I include them; they either start item 1056 or item 3303 and typically have a higher K/D than their ADC. This actually can work if your ADC is willing to get their income from CS and assists; ADCs don't need a ton of items to be tower killers while their "support" keeps the enemy "entertained". Again, it has to do with the snowball nature of S6; a few kills on your "support" means you can go toe to toe with the enemy without needing your ADC, freeing the ADC up to take objectives.

Nice analysis! You should have made a thread of your own because as a comment it will go unseen. (Would add a Pantheon thumbs-up if I wasn't on mobile.)

Support is in the best place it's been in years. We actually make money now, and our "core" items are the most cost efficient in the game. Our champions are tuned, hell DESIGNED, to have the most impact with the least income and even the least EXP. I am so confused as to how people don't understand that...

My problem with support is I get idiot ADC's who start flaming at level 3 over nothing like AAing minions under turret with shield charges, then begin feeding after constantly bitching. Then has the nerve to begin all chatting and say "This support troll and toxic, report." Of course there are a lot of fine players out there who know not to just listen to the ramblings of all chat rants. But this kind of shit really pisses me off. For these people, it's OK for THEM to rage but not others. I know people tend to tilt or lose their temper... but when I HAVE lost my temper in the past I never asked to report people for toxicity. I didn't like that word toxicity. Everyone can be toxic, even the nicest most playful person in the world. There's no doubt Riot has been making support role more and more appealing over the past 3 years. Every season, there's been a major updates catering towards support. It's ADC's that's been left in the dark for seasons straight which is why you see powerful ADC meta recently. This is why Riot won't listen to people complaining (especially assassin mains). I do understand though support is still not appealing in the slightest to those who start playing.

Would I be wrong in saying Tank Supports like Braum are suffering right now?

It seems everytime I try to play one. I get bursted just as easily as any other support. I think it's because double-thunderlords is becoming pretty common bot-lane and just about every support can slam 100 damage on their kit.

Plus the inherit level disadvantage that you end up suffering (plus tank supports having a stronger roaming presence, thus even weaker levels if you try to take advantage of this) this season means that when laning phase is over you can't really hope to peel. You'll just die a noble sacrifice trying.

I guess really this mostly affects Braum and Leona. But it just seems like they're best bet right now is to take Thunderlords and cheese an early engage rather than try to build relevant tank-support items and be relevant later.

You neglect to mention the way supports get treated by the team.

The community is equally toxic for everyone. Stop trying to make it look like only supports suffer from that. This is a behavior that I find extremely annoying as a support main - yes, more annoying than teammates being toxic. For that matter, people who are actively toxic are fairly rare. Most people are very neutral with me, not taking note of my good plays but not taking not of my fails either.

I don't understand why other support players seem to crave for recognition and attention so much. I don't need my teammate to type "wow nice" or "gj" or "omg thx" to know that what I did was awesome. You don't see threads from top, mid or ADC mains begging for recognition, and frankly I don't see them get it more than I do in my games. So, why should we get praised every time we do a good play (either offensive or defensive)???

Playing actual support (I'm talking about defenders/tankers here) is pretty much playing a different game from your typical "League of Legends". As a carry/DPS, your goal is to dish out as much damage as possible, and try to kill as many shit as you can: objectives, minions, champions, monsters... you name it. Very likely, you are going to try to optimize on dying less so you can dish out more damage (hopefully, though exceptions exist), mashing buttons in a special order to maximize the damage potential, and the like. Because your focus is trying to kill shit, you are going to focus more on yourself and your own performance.

However, playing as a support/tank is different (and again, talking about "pure" tanks/supports here). Your entire focus shifts. You are no longer a damage dealer-- in fact, your job isn't to even dish out as much damage as possible anymore. Instead, your goal is to make sure your teammates do something by not doing damage yourself (or at least directly). You are not going to play whack-a-minion in the first ten minutes of the game, you are not going to play "try to optimize as much damage as you can". Instead, the entire game becomes "save as many idiots people as you can", babysit 4 other people for 40 minutes, or just simply "annoy the entire enemy team without doing damage" (I love this job btw). In general, it becomes a lot more tactical.

I disagree with some of the things you said there. While ultimately my goal as a support is not to do lots of damage (though even this is debatable for poke supports in the laning phase - looking at you, Sona), my goal is the same as my carries: I want the enemies to die a lot, and I want their buildings to fall. The role of a support is also to create opportunities to TAKE things via offensive plays, not just "sit back, shield/heal, and save asses".

I hear you on this. As supp Karma I can keep someone alive through shield spam and that is just a hard thing to notice. And it's the same thing if I'm supp Kayle and shred the whole team's resistances by 15%

Buffs and debuffs are very hard to appreciate especially when they have little to no visual impact... this is why Sona was reworked, this is why Janna's passive was semi-reworked, and this is why nobody knows that Sona has an Exhaust-like power chord.

{quoted}

I think since the Inspiration mastery is gone, riot need to fix their exp system. They need to increase exp gained from assists but not to the point where it is as strong as getting the kill.

Crazy question here: why should it give less xp than kills? Kills don't mean you worked the most, kills mean you got the last hit on the champion. It's worth more gold, fine, I get it, why should it also be worth more xp? I see many occasions where the person getting the assist did more work creating the opportunity than the person who did get the kill credit (ofc there are "free AF assists" too like healing the Ezreal who just ulted mid lane for a snipe, I realize that).

{quoted}

But overall supports are very binary. Throw snares with Morg and uses you shield on teammates. Either QW or WQ with alistar. Then hope it was good enough to matter because your ignorable for the next ten seconds.

The same can be said for every champion in the game. Wait! With ADC it's even better, move-attack-move-attack-move-attack.

{quoted}

It would certainly help if people noticed what amazing help supports provide. Do you think that scores at the end game screen like "Amount Shielded" or "Time enemy is CC'ed" would help with this?

As a Janna main I am begging for a "damage prevented" stat, because healing isn't really representative of the protection she offers.

A "time spent buffing allies" stat could also be interesting for buff-reliant supports such as Nami, Sona, Lulu, etc.

{quoted}

Probably because supports build the same items. Every...single..game. item 3190 item 3158 item 2049 insert gold income item here, and the items are quite vanilla. Supports dont have the option to take interesting build paths without basically being trolling.

Well...

ADC builds, except for those that have very specific synergy with some items (such as Rageblade for Kog and blue Ezreal), are extremely stiff as well. Same for top, jungle, and even mid. As a matter of fact, I feel that my build as a support is more flexible than my teammates' builds, especially damage dealer, because there is pretty much one way to maximize your damage on any given champion, whereas supports do not give a F about dmg and as such are more free to build what the team specifically needs.

{quoted}

This is one of reasons why people hate playing support. It's just so braindead and boring, pick coin and afk in lane. Basically no interaction, nothing. As a support main i know there's much more to it, playing support is much more engaging than playing top/mid lane... But it's really annoying to play high skill support, doing everything you possibly can and still see braindead blitzcrank grab your ADC and instawin lane...

Coin is also the least rewarding of the three income items (rightfully so), unless you are not using Relic/Spellthief properly. It's the least used income item for a reason, so I hardly think the playstyle that it encourages is the reason so many people dislike supporting.

Besides, not only does it provide the least amount of gold out of your three options, it also provides SHIT stats.

Until you build item 3114 , you have less mana regen than the FQC line; No offensive stat of any sort, so if you do want to skirmish in lane, you have no AP, no AD, no damage increase, no nothing; No defensive stats (no armor, no MR, no HP) - again putting you at a disadvantage if you do have to fight in lane.

What does it provide? A steady, reliable income (albeit lower than the 2 other alternatives), and steady regeneration. There are 2 reasons to start Coin in lane:

  1. Your lane is a bad match up and you know you are going to get shit on for trying to make use of Spellthief
  2. Your team comp would really benefit from a item 3069 rush

{quoted}

I don't really see problem here, but hey, that might be because i play Bard, Vel'koz and Tahm. I roam with Bard but he gets XP off chimes, Tahm sits with someone in lane basically 24/7 and Vel'koz... he gets kills so its k :D

Most important levels as support are 6 and 9, 6 is obvious and 9 for upgraded sweeper

Lvl 9 is also where you get your max level on what is typically your most important skill (such as Janna's shield).

{quoted}

Would I be wrong in saying Tank Supports like Braum are suffering right now?

Considering how popular Alistar Braum Thresh are at a high level of play, I don't think tank supports are hurting right now.

It's the poke supports that are non existent: Karma Lulu (bot lane) Nami Sona Velkoz Zilean Zyra

Looking at the LCS right now as a poke support main is pretty damn depressing... all you see is tank supports (Alistar Braum Thresh mostly) and supports who deal well with these three (Janna Morgana , namely). Wooohh.

I stopped playing support because I'm sick of trying to micromanage and it not working.

You can do everything a support is supposed to do but none of it matters if your teammates aren't right clicking the correct things and you aren't strong enough to do the clicking of stuff yourself.

I'm pretty sure being blamed for everything. bossed around. told who to play. what to build. and then never getting thanked for saving someone's ass and then still getting harped at are the reasons i feel i have no impact on the game if my presence alone evokes negative attitudes and harassment. Not to mention being a tank is a joke, my items are so expensive, my gold income is less than half of my adcs and i just get one shot by absolutely everyone because I'm 4 levels below them. I'm fully aware of the impact i can have on the match, but my team seems to think otherwise.

The reason I tend to stay away from support even tho I have quite a few support champs (Blitzcrank Bard Braum Soraka Morgana Janna to name a few) it's usually due to the fact that I feel so powerless. Besides ganking mid or pulling a good play bot there is usually not to much I feel I am contributing to the team other than being a meat shield. Weirdly enough for some reason I am the most relaxed when playing support XD. I obviously still have a lot of things I can improve on.

Penta Penguin2 votes

Sorry but supports shine as play-makers and carries almost more than the actual carries. The most impactful champions in the game are supports like Thresh, Braum, Leona or Blitzcrank. I don't know where this comes from, that supports aren't the ones carrying games and getting people fed.

And no I don't main support, I main solo lanes. So my Blitz single-handedly carries his ADC and then finds time to camp my mid lane, I don't find that a lack-luster performance and I don't disrespect supports ever.

Rundus13 votes

The idea that supports aren't impactful comes from supports. The same way an artist usually thinks his work looks bad, even if it doesn't, a support often feels weak. Against a lulu as a Braum, I get hit lv 3 by her q and lose 120 hp and go "woah. That's a lot for one ability this early." As a Lulu vs Braum I do the same to him and go "Dang it. Missed the adc and only got a measly 85 damage on Braum. At lv 3, Lulu's lv 2 q deals GOOD damage. It's pretty easy to see, but for the lulu, if not told she's doing well, there is always a doubt. Supports as a whole have issues with that doubt. When Blitz single-handedly carries his adc by getting him up 2 kills and heads mid, those times where he's waiting in the brush for a chance or walking there, if he fails a gank, most people in his shoes get frustrated at being lv 6 while the lane they failed to gank is 9 and having to walk back bot after wasting time. Very few people can do that and see that the pressure they applied mid may be helping a struggling laner not get bullied out of lane for a bit.

Getting tilted as support is so much easier than any other role I've picked up since my joining in s4 as a support main. I make a bad play as jg? Just go where my team is doing good for some free help. Goof as adc? Farm back up and play like a pansy until a chance comes to get even. Forget to tp as top? I swear I'll get it next time, and when I do it feels great if I can make a difference. Lose lane as mid? Roam bot a few times with the jungler to get back into it. Fail engage as support? Well now I've done and given the enemy adc a free kill (or two), a farm lead, and gotten myself to where engaging is even harder. Maybe I'll roam? A 3+ levels behind 0/x/0 support. I can do this, I hope.

The mentality of support is a hard one to get down, and knowing you made a good contribution is a part of that. Knowing it was YOUR Sona ult that nailed the whole enemy team to set up Ori's ult, or YOUR Lulu ult that saved your Talon and got him a triple is phenomenal. Not realizing that Ori couldn't have landed that ult without you or that Talon would've traded 1 for 1 without you really gets to people. That's why I make an effort to let supports know when they they're doing well. My Thresh just engage mid and trade 2 for 3? "Dude, so worth." or "gj man." or "madlife?". If my Zil clutch ults me and dies for me from a gangplank ult: "The god himself hath saved me" or "Zil op". Little jokes like that really make the role more fun. You feel way better for the things you do, and you want to support, whereas the silent adc who you save that just goes on about their business or even goes "zil, don't feed." just puts a sour taste in your mouth.

I'm not saying you must baby supports, but sometimes a little kindness helps. Point in case: Taric players. If you have a Taric that ults and stuns at the right time, your team gets strong. Those stats are super good, but you can't see them. Heck, those stats may make or break the fight, but all you saw was Taric poke someone with a light ball and deal 300 damage to them with a hammer. (I know he functions pretty well now, but I am glads he is getting reworked. Hopefully he'll feel more rewarding). It takes a special kind of person to go "Boo ya. All dem stats, that's right. Dats me right there."

ARoninInDisgrace1 votes

And a major contribution I feel supports make are the ones who can manage lane, and then call good shots. We have a different way of doing things. i love the non supports who think Meta is actually a thing to most supports, and spend the game crying about your spells, items, or champ.. Most of us have to counter build the other team, because of the fact we do get left behind in stats due to a lack of gold. That's when most of us "switch on" and learn to rely on player mechanics to compensate, then before we know it we learn to shift those mechanics into a new role, and are like screw support, it sucks.

Rundus12 votes

Agreed. I joined League bc a tournament was happening 8 months from when I joined and my friends needed a support. I was custom trained to support, taught supporting mechanics from my diamond friends, and forced to support in every game for quite a while. I learned how to manage lane, keep up wards, harass enemies, play tanks, play casters, and help my team. The only thing I lacked was csing skills. After so long in bot lane, jungle was the clear next step when I decided I wanted to try dealing the damage outside of laning phase. From there I learned every role. While support is still my best, I am a thoroughly competent player at everything and prefer not to support. The only problem is that most support players do not think they need to adhere to the meta, but rather try to ignore it and just focus on doing what they are used to well enough to overpower the meta. The truth is: A good support does their stuff well and can be tough, even against the meta. A great support adapts their playstyle for the meta they face, guaranteeing a tough match for the opponent, even if it's something as one-sided as Sona in the assassin meta was. Sure, support is different. Many things are viable in support, despite meta. The problem is that a new meta can deal with them as they were in the last meta. ADC's and Bruisers can deal with the tank meta support playstyle. Tank meta could deal with the anti-assassin support playstyle in s5. A good support, knowing the meta, can play any valid support and still be a problem in all metas. Leona, for instance, went from being best as a side-kick babysitter in s4 to a yolo-go-in and lock down everyone multiple times in one fight in s5, and is now an opportunist, saving her cc for opportune moments to burst opponents. A good Leona, in all 3 seasons, did her jobs of warding and tanking, but kept those core differences in mind, and acted accordingly. If you play her now like s4 did, you get destroyed by range, but not by zeds. If you play her like s5 Leo, you die every time you engage. The mechanics are the still there, but they adapt. That is the beauty of support. Any support can adapt to almost any meta (Sona had issues in both s4 with assassins and s5 with tanks, but is rather strong now, for instance).

The only bad part, is when most supports "switch on" and get mechanics down and start learning these adaptive playstyles, they do tend to go towards adapting through playing other roles how they need to be played and learning to carry rather than staying bot and being a veteran support who has to rely on teamwork. I still support semi-often, and I can see clear differences between a "Meta support player" who runs only god-tier supports right now and does good or decent bc the champ is good, and Veteran support players, who may still be playing a god-tier support or may not be, but their mechanics and abilities to deal with their enemies (even by themselves) are much better. A meta support player may be able to thresh hook in and flay you towards the adc while ulting, and maybe they even lantern in a jungler, but the vets are the ones who land the flash lantern-hook combos to pull in a jungler from near drag to gank bot, then interrupt mobility spells with flay and are able to ult defensively as well as offensively. The vets are the ones who roam, ward, sit bot, and are generally just overall better. The problem remains that by that point, most take their mechanics to a lane and try carrying with them, so such supports become rare. I hope to see more of them, and I personally try to get friends who never support to take their mechanics bot and try. It usually works well after only a game or two of adjustment with a similar champ to their mains (like yi/xin players to Leona or Alistar, or mid casters to lulu, karma, sona, or Zyra. Or Yorick players to Taric). I highly suggest trying to get your friends to do it with an experienced adc. I did, and 3 or 4 of my friends now have a support main in their pool they can use very well and adapt with (the adc main ended up with Janna and Bard, the mid main has a ton, the top main plays Blitz and Ali, and the diamond jungler does as he pleases. I've seen that man win bot with Mundo support and come out 5/0/5 with a 5/0/5 adc).

ARoninInDisgrace1 votes

Yep. And some support items are very essential so in a sense that's the only "Meta" I adhere to. I pay close attention to the meta so I can try to guess their build and put things in my favor, but that also means being careful not to go too much, like say, ad and not enough mr, or, since I'm a melee support main, not going enough Ad (because I like to poke the other team into oblivion and then let the ADC last hit.) because I got addled by a tanky Blitzcrank early game, not to mention (I support Malphite ) so there's always a mid game shift in my jobs as simply bot lane support, At that point it's stuns slows and deals heavy damage. It becomes aggressive to the point of tears sometimes. I'll actually sell off most of my build, and rebuild and reshift my focus to killing enemy champs, but still maintaining warding (like with an item 2303 or an item 2302 ) but replacing certain items like a item 3025 with a item 3071 and adding a titanic Hydra to the list of things to destroy with. I like my Ad malphite support. I'm the kind of support that if it looks like an enemy is getting away I'll wait till the last second but I'm taking the shot. I've had so many adc cry so hard over it. I mean they were no where near. I usually just keep going, because if I don't respect your ADC ability because you've not shown me anything, then Imma try to feed you kills, but if I doubt for a second your gonna get thet kill, I'm not disengaging until the champs either dead, gone, or back up's arrived. And if it comes to me ending the chase, then the kills mine, shoulda kept up. or been ready. I try not to ks. I'm just not letting one go.

But it's really for me all about shifting around and mixing them up. If I'm tanky and i'm getting hurt fast i know it's an AP issue and I have to adjust. I never build the same thing, but rather have a few core items out side of the essential ones that I build around. I mean there are a lot of choices on what to add to an ice born gauntlet, sometime I get it most for the slow effect, but then I focus on damage ap or ad. Or I'll go with an Ice born Randuin's combo with something else if I'm feeling lazy. I bounce around a lot, but that seems to work well. Throws them off.

Rundus11 votes

Yea, I prefer AP supports or full tanks personally. The joys of Braum doing Braum things in the middle of the enemy team while my high-damage team (my friends rarely play any tanks except for jg) massacres. If I want damage, I go Sona or Zilean and build for late game, where if I'm needed I can easily instakill an enemy squishy. AD support is something I've never played with outside of hybrid shaco support. I can see it working, but I couldn't bear selling items before full build on support. I usually just go full tank and damage soak as Braum, Leo, Tahm, Blitz, etc.

As far as "Meta" goes, supporting is less about the op supports and more about countering the enemy champs. By meta, I meant adapting to the current meta. If I see Graves, Lucian, Zed in the enemy team I'm not likely to go Malph (attack speed slows aren't ideal here) and more likely to go for a cheeky Taric, Lulu, or Zilean pick-up. Maybe a Braum, but then Zed may be problematic. See, the difference in what "meta" means for support is mainly that, as support, all meta means is "what do I need to prep for?" If you can take on the meta, you're fine. If you only play by the meta and have only ever played the strongest supports, a meta shift against them will destroy you for quite some time. That's why I try to stay adaptive. They may know it's coming from a mile off, but if they can't stop it, I still win.

ARoninInDisgrace1 votes

I get what you mean but against any of those, I switch to the role of BD assassin support. Where I focus on leveling up Malphite's W, and E, and I just use his q and R for it's slight slow, and stun. He does so much burst, now with item 3124 and item 3147, that rounds Malphite out with item 3742 item 3075 , and item 3748 . After that I might go into a ice born, then I just deal tons of damage, and while my cd's are going I still hit hard af. And I can afford to stand there longer and do a lot more damage, especially as I don't click around in fights, I click targets and ready for my q w e's to come back.

Rundus12 votes

You know what? That actually sounds kinda fun. I think I might try some cheeky Malph stuff later. Thx for the idea. I have only ever used Diana for an assassin support. The cheese is strong with that one (or it was in s4 and s5), and a Rylais kept me relevant until late game.

I would like to see more support relevant stats being visible. Maybe some presented "Deaths prevented" stats for heals and shield mechanics and total "Effective" ward placements with some logic behind it so you can't set on fountain pouring wards into the ground.

Yes. When a game ends, I go the the stats page only to remember that there is nothing to look at as a support :( A damage shielded stat really shouldn't be that hard to implement.
