Can I bring up the state of Malzahar.

Theorex··20 votes·11,553 views

Malzahar is a extremely skill less champions the way he is now. Your rework to this champion was a utter failure, and we all know it.

I've tried to be kind about how I word my dissatisfaction with the current state that is Malzahar. But not a single mention of his current state, because everyone glaze over the fact that he himself has a very shit tier lane.

Void Shift- I said it back then and I will say it now. It is complete shit, or completely over powered. Its just time to scrap the whole thing. (passive)

Call of the Void- is in a good spot, but its not reliable in lane. Majority of champions can clear from a far enough distance to be safe from getting hit by the spell. Its not very good for dealing with champions with dashes, because if you try to stop the dash, they can dash. And if you go to hit them when they complete the dash, spell buffering will happen and the other spells you went to stop already have happened. (Q/Silence)

Malefic Visions- isn't very strong as shoving a wave, its only potential at shoving isn't there. It requires voidlings at all points in the game to clear a wave. Its damage isn't very high without landing Call of the Void or Nether. Or having item 3116 and item 3151 . (E/Space Aids)

Nether Grasp- is on too short of a CD. One of three reasons why Malzahar is in such a terrible state. The damage itself is fine, since it shouldn't be able to full to zero people. Thats fine and fair. (R/Beam Of Death)

Now the main issue of Malzahar is Void Swarm.

Void Swarm- was a gimmick from the very beginning. Majority of his damage is found in Void Swarm. But its not reliable. Imagine being a adc with 100% crit chance, but only 40% of the crits actually crit. Thats what I would feel like to play Malzahar. His W isn't reliable and there is zero skill expression in playing this current kit. Before people talk about skill expression with malzahar, yes there was skill expression with the old kit. If you didn't understand it then its because you only ever complained about the R to every really see the skills required. (W/Voidlings)

Understanding where I am coming from first.

As it stands, the soon to be lost mana directly hurts Malzahar's kit. Since he gains mana refund based on % max mana. His voidlings die in 1 spell/auto. Anything will kill them. So his lane is going to be awful. Which will directly impact the way he does, because as we all know Riot is adding back in solo carry potential. Malzahar becomes a liability, since he is now the secondary support for the ADC. He doesn't have the same type of kill potential as someone like Liss, Zed, Akali, Ryze, Cass, Xerath, Lux, Annie, Diana, Talon, Yasuo, etc. Notice something about that list I gave.

Lissandra Q kills all voidlings. Zed Q/E kills all voidlings. Akali spin kills all voidlings. Ryze E E Q kills all voidlings. Cassiopeia E's (super low CD and she benefits from using it on them anyways) kill voidlings. Annie Q's (they refresh her cd so it doesn't hurt her) Xerath kit kills Voidlings. Lux E kills voidlings. Diana Q, W, E all kill voidlings. Talon Rake kills voidlings. Yasuo Q and E kill all voidlings.

Malzahar's kit suffers from too much being added into his kit.

How do we address these issues present in his kit?

First- Remove the passive. Malzahar doesn't need a spellshield and doesn't need damage reduction. If a Malzahar player is going to play him, make him know how to position. Give him the tools to position but don't give him the tools that fix his position mistakes for him.

One of many W change idea's.

W

Prophetic Insight

Passive- Malzahar gains stacks of void insight for every champion Malzahar gets a kills/assist on or for every large minion/large monster killed. The stacks build up up to 10. Kills give 1 stacks, assist give .5 stacks, and large monster/large minion kills .5
Active- Malzahar expends 50% his stacks of void insight. Each stack of void insight prior to expenditure increases the damage that Malzahr does to everything for the next 5 seconds by .75% per stack. If Malzahar gets a champion kill while using Prophetic Insight, restores 20% of expended stacks (downward).

PASSIVE

One of many passive ideas.

Whenever Malzahar lands Call of the Void, Malzahar gains 50% movespeed buff for 1 second. While Malzahar has Malefic Visions on an enemy champion, Malzahar gain 5% + 2.5% per second of Malefic Visions tick up to 25% movespeed buff.

Changes

Nether Grasp- Changes

Cooldown: 200/160/120 & Suppression duration 1.5/2/2.5

Call of the Void- Changes

Silence increased from 1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2 >>> 1/1.5/2/2.5/3

Damage: 70/105/140/175/210 + 65% ap >>> 60/90/120/150/180 + 80% ap

Malefic Vision- Changes

Cooldown: 20/17/14/11/8

Damage: 80/115/150/185/220 + 80% ap >>> 100/135/170/205/245 + 70% ap

Even after changes like these, he may still be a bit under powered.

Edit 1: Doing the numbers behind the W and other spells at 500 AP.

Q: Gains 43.5 damage from 10 stack W.

E: Gains 44.6 damage from 10 stack W.

R: Gains 50 base damage from 10 stack W. % damage is increased by 2.4%.

Vs level 18 minions w/ 500 AP. Saying you get 3 voidlings to attack someone once each while suppressed.

Each Voidling does 184.5 damage.

(184.5*3)

553.5 - 138 = 415.5 lose of damage before you take into account the 2.4% increase on the R % max HP damage.

Honestly I just want his Voilding W be removed and bring his Void Pool back to his W.

The old Malzahar was not about summoning or even attacking the enemies, but rather corrupting the area around him to the point that people can't survive. His Q/W open areas to the Void that poison people near it while his E corrupted the mind that could spread/infect others, thus spreading the corruption.

But nope..when they ask what they wanted from Malz during the mage update, people high off using AD malz on URF wanted 'moar voilding' so he became a summoner of pets. If they are strong he op, if they are weak, he weak. They can't balance it.

I miss my Main Mage Malz.

I like his old W too

Theorex5 votes

I liked his old W as well. But since its on the R. Its whatever now. I miss using the W to do crap tons of damage to the enemy team while they were trying to teamfight in front of baron. Its something that hardly anyone ever noticed.

Pandemic Punch5 votes

I mainly liked using it as a zoning tool. It's zoning potential was extremely powerful with Rylia's. Now his kit doesn't have any zoning and that was a big hit to his play style for me.

Theorex1 votes

Right, the number of times I live with like 200 HP. Because I drop my W it blocks a Skillshot and then rylai's slows the enemy behind me as I YEEEEEEEETTT the fuck on out of there.

LOL! YES! And the built in HP% damage was devastating to walk over. Especially when combined with Liandry's. Great times

I do too. I wish they'd just take off his Banshee's Veil passive (this is what's causing a lot of issues in Malzy's kit) and bring back his old W and passive. At least with old Malz, you needed to time your passive so that the void puppy comes up from your E or ult.

lightdragoon881 votes

That the thing: I DON"T want his voidling passive back. I actually really like the Void Shift.

Beacon Academy4 votes

Malzahar being immobile was one of the reasons why he had strong spells

What happens when you give him something that makes him safe despite being immobile?

His power gets hit fucking hard.

The shield needs to go.

(Old Malzahar needed to position well and didn't need a shield to bail them out)

lightdragoon881 votes

He still needs a better passive than the old voildling summoning.

Beacon Academy3 votes

lolwut?

The old voidling were more interactive with Malzahar than these new ones as good Malz players had to time their 21 second life in accordance with what they needed done in lane.

Not to mention the fact that they were tankier and stronger.

They were the reason why Malzahar in lane could punish roamers as 100% physical damage is applied to towers early game when Malzahar had a small amount of AP for that 40% AP damage to towers. (How many times will a tower last against frenzied Voidling AA, Malzahar's AA, and minion waves) [Especially if a cannon takes the shots while Voidling attacks the tower in adult form and then frenzied]

They also allowed his spells to have stronger base and ratios by scaling with AD rather than AP.

They also made Malzahar theoretically viable of playing all five roles.

Why wouldn't you want them back?

The same was true for the reworked 2016 voidswarm (except for the AD bit). I'm happy with either. Just having them be worth something again would be nice lol

Beacon Academy2 votes

How was new Void Swarm interactive? Maybe for the enemy laner, but not for Malzahar...

He just threw them out and that was that.

Their AA are constant against towers and they are one shotted by towers.

The only thing Malzahar punishes roamers for now are loss of minions unless they are gone forever.

And again... Them being AP ratio sucked power from his other abilities.

Think about it.

1 AD Passive, 4 Strong AP Spells... in other words 4 sources of magic damage Not including liandry's/deathfire

vs

Shield, 4 Weaker AP Spells... in other words 5 sources of magic damage (R is 2 sources) Not including liandry's/aery's/comet/scorch/E Reset

Basically

Strong spells vs Spammable spells

Multiple builds vs One build

Flexible use vs Combo recipe

I don't know about you, but Old Malzahar definitely wins for me in both freedom of spell usage and power.

Actually no. The voidSWARM had an additional effect where if they hit a champion first, they spawned another up to 6, they also had different priorities between malefic visions and nethergrasp much like the old malz. You had to wait for the malefic visions to "ping" onto an opponent before you spawned them or use them for waveclear, not BOTH. It was very tactical unlike the current spam as you had to time them right with your ult to ensure they didn't walk over and hit a minion instead.

What if I told you...

Malzahar used to be able to direct Voidling(s) with his auto attacks?

And that Malzahar used to have 5 more movement speed and 50 more AA range to supplement that?

You wanna talk about Voidling control? Malzahar has less of it now.

He can't even opt to use a leash to pull his Voidlings back anymore.

And you wanna try and argue "if's" to try and make the abominations seem good lol.

The old Voidlings were tanky enough to not be "If's" and required more than one spell to kill (Enemy laner would have to use more mana to get 12g or focus on minions instead) [Needless to say, they usually wanted minions, which is why you could use your Voidling in lane)

If you told me that I'd be very surprise that no one has brought this up before to me, very happy with the idea of a revert, and would again point out (as I have done on numerous occasions) that I did not PLAY in 2016 so never got to play the old Malzahar. The only information I have regarding him is through old videos of gameplay and what people have told me on the boards/ingame. Sadly no one ever mentioned these things so I was unaware.

Edit: Also I hope you voted on the poll! https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/EVvZAITe-revert-malzahar

From what I've heard a lot of people liked both AP and AD, some even went into both which I can really see working with items like gunblade to a certain degree.

I'm actually on the fence with this whole thing now... I fell in love with Malzahar last year when I started playing him with his Voidswarm. Having 6 minions chase my laner away when he tried to screw my mana regen from malefic visions up was so enjoyable, I wanted it back. But hearing people talk about the pre 2016 rework, with aa targeting your voidling, it growing up and chasing people away, having a leesh to call it back... Damn I really don't know which I'd like more! xD

The voidling have always been a huge part of why I loved malz (though anyone who plays malz also has to enjoy the dot style gameplay of malefic visions!), I just want them to be worth more than an aa countered wave clear :(

TyroneWatermelon7 votes

Malz is complete shit tier contrary to all the retards that complain about him:

-Trash laning phase. -Trash Early and Late game. -No mobility or Hard cc( without popping ult and staying in place). -No AOE damage outside of unreliable Q and the tards that for some reason walk on R. -Single damage is DPS and is shitty without huge amounts of AP and Liandry’s. -Damage overall is weak and trash until he reaches his mana item+ Ryali+ Liandry’s. -Pain in the anus to last hit with without wasting mana on E, and using W to push,(they get instakilled by enemy champs) and takes a lot of manage early without mana items. -Voidlings are beyond useless, beside dealing below decent dps, and getting instakilled, they are basically FREE GOLD for the enemy in lane. -Ult is useless when the enemy has a qss

The ONLY reason people actually play Malzahar is for his R, and that is countered by a fucking 1300 gold item.

The only reason Malzahar performs good in low elo is obviously because bronzes and silvers are non sentient/oblivious/refuse to buy QSS.

(Mages don’t need Qss because they outrange him and tanks should almost never get ulted anyway and will survive. Supports usually stay in their back line and suck the marksman’s dick. Those that aren’t, are tanks.)

Bioness4 votes

I too long for old Malzahar. I will admit I was one of those people that got high off AD Malz in URF and part of me still wants him to have pet AD scaling.

His current kit is just unsatisfying and the voidlings offer nothing but free gold to my lane opponent.

Theorex3 votes

I don't really know anyone that enjoys Malzahar's current kit. The only time anyone ever gets enjoyment out of the live kit is when they get 3-6 voidlings out that murder everything. The problem with that is that in team fights, they don't live. In lane they don't live. They live for one purpose. And that is to die to the enemy lmao.

I personally believe that a champions kit should at least be fun, at the very minimum.

I think that mordes kit is fun, even with all of its bugs. That third whack is always fun to watch.

I think that vlad is fun as well, ghost flash R EW.. Q and walk away because good guys don't watch explosions.

Ryze is 100% fun, too bad he doesn't get to enjoy it..

Cass is fun as well :| Like every champions in the game is fun in their own way.

Except Malzahar, hes just uninteresting to begin with, and to finish it off unfun to play.

Eedat3 votes

Get rid of his R. Point and click suppression is never going to be balancable unless they gut his damage

Yaśuo Main1 votes

It's not even the damage. The CC alone for that long can win a teamfight. You literally just flash R and have any high damage ally pounce onto the target (should be ADC)

Theorex5 votes

item 3140

Yaśuo Main2 votes

That's a tax, as well as not being instant due to human reaction time.

Eedat1 votes

And if you're not an ADC?

Theorex3 votes

Its the same tax that you pay to not die to malzahar or his jungler.

Its the same tax to not die to Syndra ulti or Zed ulti when you buy a Zhonya's. But for much cheaper. And can be used on other things.

If you aren't opting into a QSS as a mage early its up to you. But you almost promise yourself a gank free lane and 0 pressure from Malzahar once you buy it.

Eedat1 votes

Are you nuts? I'm not building Zhonyas to not die to syndra R as a bruiser. That's not a "tax".

Theorex2 votes

As a bruiser you have other options then. Maw, is a good example. QSS should fit into your build. It benefits you as well with the ability to get out of CC.

If you're telling me that you refuse to change your build, even though it is the best thing to do. Because you don't want to. Then its not Malzahar's fault that you stayed suppressed for 2.5 seconds. Its yours.

Again the only classes that even have the rights to complain about Malzahar suppression are.

Tanks, Ap casters, supports. They don't have items that build out of QSS. They don't benefit from the AD that Scimitar gives.

lightdragoon881 votes

Well there is item 3222 for supports....even though they can't use it on themselfs Malzahar usually doesn't ult supports so it something they can get for the team.

Eedat2 votes

Mikaels doesnt work on suppression. And yes, 100% positive

Eedat2 votes

No, let me break this down.

If you're a bruiser, you build Maw to counter Syndra ult right? You wouldnt build Zhonyas because it gives you a bunch of worthless stats you dont want correct? You think that its just some weird coincidence that bruisers build Maw and mages literally never do and vice versa?

Well the ONLY counter item for Malz ult is QSS which ONLY builds into an AD item. Similar to the bruiser scenario you do NOT want to build this item, but its the ONLY counter you can build. You are pidgeonholed into dropping 1400 gold in a component you are never going to upgrade. You are forced into buying an AD item component which puts you own build massively behind AND wastes an inventory slot.

The difference between buying zhonyas to counter an assassin is that it still gives you some stats you want while QSS is just a complete waste of an inventory slot. THAT IS NOT A "TAX". That is just called bullshit and is the reason Malz was gutted and will remain gutted until its gone

Theorex1 votes

First off, if QSS saves your life against a Malzahar its 300 gold back into your pocket. Because he didn't get 300 gold.

Everyone looks at those items incorrectly. Everyone sees it as a burden, because they don't get to build damage. But the reality of it is, that it completely invalidates the champion. Look at pro play. Whenever someone builds a QSS, the malzahar players generally swap to another target. Even in Solo Queue, whenever someone has a QSS. The malzahar player will swap to another target. Its the exact same with Zed players knowing someone has a Zhonya's or LeBlanc players knowing someone has GA.

They don't want to burn a spell on something that will end up bearing no fruit.

So get that mentality of "Tax" out of the way. If you like feeding because you see it as a waste, then go ahead.

Secondly, lets talk about other suppressions.

Skarner and WW. They both have suppressions. Yet they are fair?

Look at Malzahar he isn't a tank. He can be knocked out of his with CC.

Look at WW. He has DAMAGE REDUCTION in his kit, good damage, and is bruiser. He can knocked out of his with CC.

Look at Skarner. He is a tank. He can literally damage you while moving you around with his suppression. He can't be knocked out of his with CC.

Now lets talk about why Suppressions exist.

If suppressions didn't exist hyper mobility would be insane. There would be nothing that can stop hyper mobility such as LB mid dash, master yi alpha strike, reksai R mid jump, etc. The closest thing you come to those are "grounds" and poppy W. Malzahar was created to lock down and make assassins think about what they should do in order to get in. Hyper mobility in this game is already an issue as it is. No one likes watching yasuo dash 6 times through their minions. No one likes watching rakan, E to an Ally to get closer to you, to W towards you for a knock up. Only to get CC'd upon getting there, and then E back to their adc. Lets just be real here.

flibitydoo2 votes

Skarner has to hug you to cast it on a champion with basically garbage mobility tools. It's very easy to have an established frontline negate him from ever getting there given that his strategy is to walk towards you and slows exist everywhere in this game. Warwick's is tied to an avoidable/bodyblockable skillshot and does not have an anti-cc shield that allows him to ignore peel. He stuns himself to stun you as well in a very dangerous situation (aka he's hugging you during the ult).

further comparisons pantheon w is a targetted stun, but it puts him in point blank range meaning he will die very fast for flash w and it's only a 1 second stun versus a 2.5 suppress lissandra ult is a targetted 1.5 second stun with a 550 cast range versus a 700 ranged one and she has no cc barrier (and her E is among the most telegraphed engage in the game). Doing this also means she can't ult herself for safety. malphite is a targetted aoe. If you play the game with reasonable FPS and ping, you can genuinely dodge it with flash/zhonyas surprisingly consistantly. Nautilus is a 1 second targetted knockup+1-2 second stun with an 825 cast range. You can use tenacity on the stun part. The projectile has a travel time that gives you ample opportunity to move into the safety of your team or away from further engage/damage or outright zhonyas it. Or you could just dumpster Nautilus early game because he sucks early game. Vi is 1.25 second knockup and is also non-instantaneous like nauts. Pretty much unusable right now because it suffers from the pantheon/malphite/warwick problem of "well, you just set yourself up to get perfectly countered by lulu ult and then lose"

Also read further and you seem to have some sort of personal vendetta against "hyper mobility". Maybe you're that guy that actually lost to 5 zeals+mobility boots 102 death Rammus that I saw on a forum screenshot a few years ago. Moving fast is a strength sure, but like a lot of games there is no malz or no anti-hypermobility. And the mobile champs still die. Lee sin still loses. Kassadin and fizz still get caught and die. I have yet to see a game where Camille/riven actually goes 0 deaths. Just because they can move to dodge doesn't mean you can't correct your aim and predict where they are going to be. And often times that mobility is only there because hey, every single champ I just listed? yeah they're all melee. What you want them to be punching bags that just stand there and get beat to death by ranged ones all game?

Beacon Academy2 votes

I have been fucked up many times by Ahri's or Cassiopeia's smart enough to get this item.

Why?

Because your ult is now a waste if you choose to use it on them.

They get to do whatever it is they do in team fights and Malzahar will have to ult someone else.

And guess what happens if he ult someone else?

Charm or petrify.

Ahri desu3 votes

It is Riot's typical way to remove all the damage from a champ while increasing their skills reliability in order to decrease the skill required to play it and also decrease the maximum skill cap on them.

That is what happened to Ahri.

Theorex2 votes

I honestly, should have been more vocal about it. But at that time, I didn't have a mass number of mastery points (Cause the mastery system wasn't in from when I started playing Malz, and I was in basic into AIT for all of season 5. So i lost out on a bunch of mastery score).

So my opinion wasn't important sadly.

Honestly speaking. These dumbed down kits of older champions and these overloaded kits of these newer champions aren't a good mix.

We need something of a in between. Xayah Rakan was good, they might be a bit strong together but by themselves as of right now they are pretty fine. Zoe was a complete mess. Ornn was a mess for a while because of % max hp shield. Swain is pretty decent, not sure how the swain mains feel tbh. Etc.

his ult is his identity*, and his identity doesn't let him be anything more than a counter pick when he's not broken

######*and voidlings too i suppose

Theorex4 votes

I mean, back in old Malzahar days. He wasn't just a counter pick, he was decent enough to go into all lane match ups and do fine against them. His R was better back then too.

So somehow getting a useless passive, and a useless skill warranted gutting the rest of his kits damage.

Also lets talk about R's.

Malzahar's ulti is a 2.5 second suppression. Which also locks him out of doing anything. And is completely countered by QSS.

Meanwhile champions like Galio and Naut bring more to the table. Galio and Naut both knock people up. Naut for 2 seconds. Galio .75 up to 1.25 second knock up + 30+ 8% per 100 MR damage reduction to an ally.

Knock ups can't even be QSS'd.

YumaS2Astral2 votes

The passive isn't useless. It is actually the most broken passive in the game and the reason why the rest of Malzahar's kit must be shit to compensate

in other words: this passive is taking away a lot of his power budget

Play against a vel or a kassadin. Its not a very hard thing to do since malzahar has pretty short range, and you can afford to trade with him pretty easily early in.
