What do you think Riot intended for Varus to be during his development?

From what I read before and after his release in many articles and posts is that they basically wanted to make a dark corrupted Archer character (which is where I assume the Blight part of his kit comes into place as their new take on this goal as this ability is one of a kind).

And now skipping all those many years, it seems that thet just see him as an artillery poke Archer. Let me explain why that is...

  • If you were to create a new account and play Varus before you unlock the Rune Choosing feature upon reaching a certain level, Varus' default Runepage is the Arcade Comet page setup.
  • During his Spotlight Video his recomended Runes and Masteries were heavily DPS based, rather than ability casting.
  • His recommended items currently are also DPS items.
  • In the new TFT mode his chosen main ability is.. You guessed it, his Q.

And now to sum it all up, I wonder what Riot actually sees him as, seeing as they have a bit of a inconsistency in this matter.

What do you all think?

Well, he wasn't supposed to be a hybrid of two guys and an alien...

Riot sometimes changes the character's archetype, in accordance to how he is played by the community. Remember when Morgana was supposed to go mid and counter mages?

He is a hybrid of a family father of ionian decent, that bonded with a alien and stole the body of two dudes. ...yeah they changed his lore a bit and it is complicated.

That fiasco was complicated. The original plan was to rework him to fuse with two dudes and being a Darkin. Then the Varus community went full revolt against it because the key point was that Varus was a father who was passing on tradition who lost everything.

So Varus has his old lore back, which means he was a ascended warrior at one time. But on the other hand as a result the two random dudes are thrown in the Darkin blender.

And that's why you can't just retcon the key point of a plot. It just fucks up everything.

I though they wanted Lethality Varus to be a thing, like the sniper artillery ADC, but noooo had to give him a long cooldown on his Q.

I don't think RIOT intends to do anything. I think they just randomly change sht and then make excuses about why it doesn't work. I don't think they care enough to 'intend' anything.

During his development, he was sort of a 'red mage' of champions. Doing a lot of magic damage with reliance of attack damage items like attack speed and on hit.

I think the intention behind his kit was to allow him to stack up as much blight as he could on his enemies and catch them out with his Q, dealing a lot of execution damage.

IMO, he's a good champion to pick different paths of specialization, AP/Lethality/On-hit/crit all do him well.
