PBE 6.14 cooldown ping suggestion re: ward ping
I don't have a PBE account, so I can't respond to the cooldown ping thread on the PBE forums like I'd prefer to (link to the relevant thread above). I hope you assorted forum denizens can forgive this spam. LtRandolph mentioned that there was some tricky tech under the hood for adding a ward ping, and I'm sure it's all much more complicated than it looks to the end user, but I wanted to throw out what I thought could be a potential solution.
Currently you have the ping wheel — press your ping key (G or V by default) and left-click and drag on the screen to bring up the wheel that shows all the options for pings you can use: up for danger/warning, left for enemy missing, down for requesting assistance, right for on my way. (I would at this point like to extend my deepest thanks to the person who once came up with the mnemonic "heads UP, enemy LEFT, I'm going DOWN, I'll be RIGHT there." It's made my life immeasurably easier.)
My suggestion is to remove the generic danger/warning ping on the up-drag, since there's also a generic danger/warning ping mapped to V by default, and replace it with a "ward here" indicator. It wouldn't be a targeted thing, like pressing G and clicking an enemy to put a target on them, but a regular old click on the map or minimap to drop the indicator there. I could see that messing with the mnemonic some ("heads UP, there's a ward"?), so perhaps a better version would be to put the ward ping on V and keep the generic danger/warning on G+left-click+drag up, but I could see that being kind of oddly specific and difficult to access.
I believe LtRandolph also mentioned that ping wheel tech would be getting overhauled soon, possibly with the client update, so perhaps this is something you've already considered. Just wanted to get my thoughts out.
