When should i start ranked?

MunchCrunchLunch··1 votes·4,169 views

so I've been playing for about 2 months now. level 30 for long time. over 1100 matches in normals. 50% win rate. is it a good idea to start ranked in s6 beginning? when does it start?. some of my silver/gold friends say that i should get better before i go in so i skip. bronze because it takes way too long to get out of it. how do I know am better than bronze really and how does the whole placement work?

you should start ranked as soon as you hit 30 and only play ranked from that point on.

you dont need to worry about how much better than bronze you are or how the placements work. you just need to play.

i can't really say whether or not you should start ranked unless i can see your match history and for some reason it's saying you haven't played any games.

but if you've been playing for long enough that you're confident in your abilities, you have full rune pages of tier 3 runes, and you can play at least 1 champ in each role well, then i'd say sure, why not. probably best to be good at more than one champ for each role though.

the way ranked works, it calculates your MMR based on well you perform in your ranked games, and uses that to determine how much LP you should be gaining per win, and losing per loss. it also helps determine where you should be placed when you get out of your provisional matches. so if you play now, you have a chance of raising your MMR so that when the new season starts you can get placed higher.

once ranked resets, you will have to do your placement matches over again but the MMR will stay with you. meaning whatever you did in preseason does count a little bit, but not so much that it completely fucks you over if you did badly. it's a fresh start.

the placement matches are basically just 10 matches that you have to play before you get put in a rank. it sort of depends on MMR and also on how many of the matches you win in those 10 games. for example i won 7/10 of my games in placement and got put in silver 3, but if your MMR was different than mine you could get placed lower or higher

sorry for the novel, hope this helps

because ranked is competitive and stressful and i like playing with my friends and having a good time playing video games lmfao. you the type that does nothing but grind soloq constantly because nobody wants to play with you?

AyRe CoNteMpT2 votes

im the type that believes if you want to get better at the game, you have to play ranked for it since you learn almost nothing from normals.

your winrate gonna be about the same in ranked as in normals but you learn more from every single game so "preparing for ranked" by playing 1000 normals does absolutely nothing. people are scared to be placed in bronze or what? like OP said he wants to know if hes better than bronze. ofcourse he isnt, he is shit and he is probably bronze 5 level but if he wants to change that, he has to play through it and learn the ways.

sure if you wanna play with your friends (more than one) go play dominion or normals (same effect on your skill) but he didnt say anything about playing with friends, he only talked about becoming better. so basically you didnt answer his question but just dropped some gibberish. you coulda told him "go play mario kart, its really fun with friends" too and it woulda been the same.

good the boards have users like you too, or everyone would be so serious.

Lol i looked at your profile and you really do soloq all the time and never play with friends. damn. that hurts im sorry

im going to sleep.. you're boring and friendless

i mostly play jungle. i think am really good at it since thats where i play over half my matches. however i am not a good. adc/support. it doesn't really have to do with the champion as i am not good at these positions where i have to depend on someone else. you know what am saying. am not in mental sync with adc/support and they dont do what you think they will do and you know shits fucked up.

i can mid and top sufficiently. solo lanes. and jungle is my main. jax is my first bought champion. i have 70% winrate with him in my last 67 matches. poppy i have 65% win rate.

i have 50% with teemo.

58% with nasus. nasus is one of the first champs i bought i think am sufficient with him.

53% ekko jungle. which i just bought. and mastered. 5 . i like him in jungle. devoure tank pretty strong.

67% winrate with master yi. i dont like yi that much because hes basically the more mobile. but way squishier version of jax. am not that good as yi. but hes just a strong champion

the deal is i used to be a lot better with ap champs. diana. kassadin. viktor. before the last update. now ad items cost less. and ap items cost more. so i don't do as well.

i played jinx top for like 21 matches and some adc when she was free and i have 52% winrate with her. if i ever adc I'd use jinx. my most played adc is tristana. but tbh i dont really like her kit at all. even tho i got a pentakill with her on like my 2nd ever game.

i have okay presence in mid and top lanes. and great presence in jungle. but am not so great in bot lane. again. the thing about the duo lane is that with some champs. one mistake leads to death = snowballing of the other side and you have to depend on someone else too.

btw i like ezreal too. ap. i did pretty good with him

i think if you want to play ranked, you should start after you get good tier 3 rune pages. then if you're going to play, you should also not be afraid of where you get placed. you're new. you just started league, and you will improve with time! but for now, after only playing for 2 months, bronze isn't so bad. most of us were bronze once. don't worry so much about climbing and try to just enjoy the game and learn :^)

Their are countless threads on climbing. Basically if you can keep a 50.0000000000001% win rate then you climb. MMR determines who you play against an thus how many LP you get and therefore determines how quickly you climb though and that is believed to be more about the quality of your play than by the number of wins you get.

Ranked is difficult because there are standards such as the location of ward placement and tend to be a lot less organic than normals where anything can happen. Games fall into a repetitious pattern of being measured by the ideal standard of a perfect game and you begin to literally race against the clock to outpace your opponent. This leads to epic misplays and poor decision making. I recommend that instead of playing to win lane you play to not lose lane. The longer a game lasts the more your mechanical skill will have an opportunity to pay off and the more likely a less skilled player will make a mistake. The other strategy is to play aggressive early and to bully less skilled opponents . By doing this though you essentially encourage the other team to coordinate better. And then all they have to do is shut you down to win. Also Adc is a terrible role to main in low elo. You depend too much on the goodwill and skill of your teammates.

Yeah I pretty much only play Ranked. I started in August and already have 290 wins in it lol.

As long as you have multiple rune pages and a good sized champion pool you are good to go.

Started playing this game in July and only played around 18 games in ranked. There is no need to rush. When you do play though, don't feel bad if you lose your first game. I did. Badly. Like, very badly. Super badly. (1/10/4 as Thresh). But then I played more to the point where I carried some games. Good Luck!

My Personal Opinion Of What New Players That Want to Start Ranked Need:

  1. (a) Have played enough champions that you will have something to bring into any matchup (and appropriate AD/AP rune pages +masteries for them). You should NEVER bring a champion you're unfamiliar with into ranked. (b). If you're forced into a role that you're not familiar with, or you find yourself thinking "how bad could it go?", be comfortable with INFORMING your team and tell them that you're new.

  2. You should be able to go into a custom match alone (without any bots) and kill 100 minions in 10 minutes with every type of champion you play. I'd recommend doing every single one since you're new, but if you're too impatient just thinking by types of champions is fine, ie "Long range poke mage", "AOE CC tank", etc.

  3. Set a standard of gameplay for yourself that you can reasonably reach every game. Maybe you don't want to die more than X times, you want to tank or do X amount of damage, you want to place so many wards, etc. This will make you pay more attention to your own actions and mistakes and give you something to actively improve on. I generally suggest dying less and csing more.

  4. Don't troll and avoid off-meta picks. If you're picking a champion with a glaring weakness (for example, Teemo or Graves jungle are very susceptible to early invades), ask your team if they'll help you cover that weakness. If they won't, DON'T PICK IT.

  5. Have a reasonable understanding of what to build and when. This is something that will only come with practice, but it's something off-site guides and websites like champion.gg can help you with. If you're ever in doubt, feel free to ask the boards. This sort of applies to 4 as well. If most players don't build X item on X champion, there's probably not a good enough reason to pick it over the other items.

  • Get at least 3 or 4 good rune page setups (5 if you need an exotic page).
  • Have a basic understanding of all of the positions and master at least 2.
  • Get a sizable champion pool. Master at least 4 champions because you'll need fallbacks taking into account bans and pick order. Learn at least 3 in every position (multi-role champs can overlap) so that you're not stranded when stuck with an undesirable position.
  • It also really helps to educate yourself on item pathing for different champions. Situational builds can save you from wasting the champion you picked. Don't go for gimmicks and stay practical.

I recommend that you wait until they fix this preseason nonsense before going in. From looking at your matches, you're about low to mid silver, so you shouldn't have a problem being able to fulfill the criteria above, even if you might need some effort.

The only reason getting out of bronze would be hard and take a long time is if you suck and belong in bronze. I suggest you keep on playing a bit more, but dang... 1.1k matches already in 2 months o.o? Play a bit more until you get even more familiar with the game. You'd probably not place that high up.

Id just do placements and get placed in the new season. best way to know your skill is by doing ranked. If you are better then bronze you wont be placed in it, or you'll easily climb it when you improve so.
