This is the definition of a leading question. Personally I'm of the mind that the pattern of smite top during that time was good and fun. Smite gave a little variance to playstyles top-lane before teleport became flat out expected everytime.
Now, to directly answer your question. Yes, I did enjoy playing against that. AFTER the damage on cinderhulk was reduced versus champions. I do agree the damage on cinderhulk was overtuned, as a lot of jungle items turned lane items turn out to be.
However I will address my own personal bias in that I don't usually play assassins but fighters and supports who directly benefit from a tank meta. Assassins and mages will naturally have a much worse time during a tank-meta in the same way adc's and supports will have an awful time in an assassin meta.
In general I'm of the mind that tank metas are easier to adapt to than assassin metas as you can circumvent an overbearing tank with rotating and splitpushing. An assassin meta however requires grouping and good teamfights, which is harder to utilize in solo-q.
But hey, that's just my opinion and I recognize others will have differing opinions based on their favorite champs and strats.
