What is the point of picking Lulu, again?

What does she accomplish in this game that can't be accomplished by someone else? And I don't mean "Her abilities do ____". I mean what is the strategic "point" of Lulu?

She's a solid Support. Deals reasonable damage. Has a solid AS + MS Buff that also serves as a polymorph on enemies. Her E (Pix) either serves as a shield or as further damage plus vision of the target for 4 seconds. And finally, her ultimate is one of the best ways to counter a working gank, as it provides a shield, a bonus health buff, and knocks up all enemies near the target.

chipndip13 votes

Don't describe her kit to me. Rather, explain when you'd need this champion over other supports in this game.

Like, if someone's ganking, I don't want Lulu. I want Janna.

If I want sustain, I want Soraka.

If I want to snowball the lane in a massacre, I want Zyra or Brand.

If I want some tanky engage, I want Alistar or Blitz, where Alistar is a front liner and Blitz is a lane bully.

Tanky disengage? Braum.

CC immunity? Morgana.

Roaming? Bard.

A hybrid pick? Nami.

Flex pick in a solo lane? Zilean.

What is Lulu? What does one want her for that someone else can't just bump her out of the way and take her spot?

If you don't want to use her, you'll find reasons not to. That is what you seem to want to do, so anything I tell you would be pointless. I can't give you what you deny yourself.

so in other words you cannot even bother to try and tell him why Lulu is a good pick? You just pretty much said to him what her kit does but that doesn't really mean anything since you can just say what a kit is supposed to do about any champion and make them look good. Lulu as she stands now is an inferior Janna and an inferior Karma. Yes she is able to do stuff but other supports does what she does but better so in the end there really isn't much going for her

SchmidttyGames5 votes

She has a slow, a polymorph, a knockup, two shields, a true health buff, and can put out enough damage to make you think twice. I'm not going to waste time theorizing on why who is better when. You can't predict what you'll face in a game.

If you don't like her, don't play her. It's that simple.

chipndip12 votes

So you're conceding she's pointless? It isn't a matter of what you have. It's what your purpose is given those things.

Example: Yorick can summon ghouls and shit to one lane while he pushes another, but he's weak as sin right now (1.5% pick, 48% win) because instead of being a major split push threat, he needs his ult to help him fight, and if you're only splitting one lane, you might as well play Nasus. Why pick Yorick? It's supposed to be so you can split two lanes at once, but until that's resolved...there is no reason.

Same thing here. I was going to make this thread for Garen, honestly, but I switched up last second. Lulu isn't the only one with this problem.

it really seems like you are here just to argue, but I'll bite.

She's versatile. Kind of the jack of all trades type similar to Sona. She has a lot of flexibility with what she can do. If you don't like flexibility and a variety of utility and want to focus on being the master of a single support type, don't use Lulu.

chipndip11 votes

If I'm "just trying to argue", then I wouldn't have any real points to make on the topic. I'd just say she's bad, and thus deal with it.

Even with what you said, Sona's a better jack-of-all-trades than Lulu, and Nami is a better jack-of-all-trades than Sona. Why pick the bronze trophy JoAT when you can pick the biggest catch?

If Lulu truly had a niche, this thread would have been resolved on the first response.

Karma feels nearly as versatile as Lulu and all around better than lulu currently to me.

if i wanted a support that is a generalist i would either pick Nami or Sona, they can still put out decent damage and they can still do a bunch of things that Lulu can do but once again BETTER!

You can tell me everything she can do and i don't care. I don't need to know what her kit does since i know what her kit does and her kit outside of her ult and polymorph is useless. If i want to be a champion with peel i won't pick Lulu at all i would pick Janna or Nami. If i wanted big shields i would pick Karma or Janna. If i wanted sustain i would pick Sona, Nami or Soraka. If i wanted to deny assassins, i would pick Janna or Braum or even Alistar over Lulu. Damage? Sona, Karma does it better and more reliably/not making you run out of mana all the time.

There is no point in picking Lulu over anyone else right now other than "i like her!" that might be good for some but not enough to actually make her viable. There are better generalists and better champions overall

chipndip11 votes

Here's the thing:

See how I listed a ton of support picks and what they're good for? I'm asking the same for Lulu. Not what she does. WHAT SHE'S GOOD FOR. I use Sona all the time, but I think she has this same problem. This isn't about if I want to use a champ or not. It's "is this champ in a good spot in this game or not". Clearly she isn't if there's no reason to pick her in a strategic game.

She doesn't do anything unique, she just has a unique combination of utility spells.

I'd put her with an engage champion. You can Make Yasuo one, or go with the typical jax/dari/shyv for example. She gives that extra knockup which can absolutely ruin an enemy team's day.... If you have the team smart enough to utilize it.

Niyumi2 votes

She is the ultimate counter engage champ, with the most versatility in her kit. Janna can peel, but Lulu makes the enemy dive useless AND peels. She can buff or debuff, and controls the fight more than any support.

Why pick Lulu? Control. If you don't like her, oh well, don't play her.

chipndip11 votes

But "the ultimate counter-engage" is Janna. Lulu's main issue, and why she went to solo lanes, is that Lulu really only has enough peel for one person since it's all targeted. Janna's ult and Q can hit many people at once, and thus peel from an entire engage up to 2 times. She also has her passive which speeds people up when they run towards her, and since she's usually with the back line, she's usually leading the retreat, which further helps peeling from enemies. That niche's been long dominated.

And if we're talking about control, enchanters and disruptors of all flavors are controllers. Lulu's not special in that regard.

Why make this thread? Because I like to make points and raise discussion on things that I see are in a bad spot. Haven't said that much about Lulu, so I'm talking about Lulu. If she was in a good spot, this thread would have been easily answered. Hell, I already did it for a ton of champs in an earlier response. It isn't hard if you don't have to bs an answer.

Karma Janna might be banned and you go "well I guess I'll play lulu". Cause both of them simply outclass her currently, imo.

What I imagine is that with Lulu, she's a pretty good counter pick to assassins while having some decent poke with her Q. Her W can make champions practically useless for 2.25 seconds at max rank, or can be cast on an ally to give them bonus movement speed and attack speed. She also has a shield and some pretty decent poke with her Q (while it not being the most AMAZING poke). Most notably, her ult can be used to either protect the ADC or be good engage with it's knock-up effect. But then again, this is just what I figure from watching her as I don't play her lol

targeted CC against the person diving? silence the riven? not so in your face target and suddenly blocked for a little bit?

shield/save your adc?

Oleandervine1 votes

Lulu is versatile, moreso than a lot of other supports. Most of her spells have duality to them that let's her function offensively or defensively.

chipndip12 votes

But Nami does that better than anyone in the game right now, so why pick her for it over Nami?

Like, when is there a time you NEED Lulu more than anyone else?

Nami isn't as versatile as Lulu. Nami's offense is incredibly unreliable and hinges on landing R, plus she's got a very limited AA modifier in E. Lulu has Glitterlance and Help Pix as offensive tools, as well as a great AA modifier in her passive. While Nami is great in lane and can swing team fights, she's typically known for her very hard CC and heal. Lulu doesn't have as hard of CC as Nami, but she can poke like a mofo, a lot more effectively than Nami. Having poke is effective in creating kill lanes, and Lulu's kit favors ADCs who like to be in your face and aggressive, while Nami favors more passive play and ADCs who are more bursty.

EndlessSorcerer2 votes

Even if Nami has slightly stronger hard-CC (due to larger AoE), Lulu's tends to be far more reliable.

God knows that if the enemy has a mobile champion (i.e. Akali, Ahri, Riven, Yasuo), I'd prefer a targeted spell and AoE knock-up to telegraphed skillshots.

chipndip11 votes

I disagree that Lulu's poke is much of anything, especially seeing how Lulu maxes E now, which shows how worthless her Q is. However, the rest makes for a good response.

Edit: So for those downvoting this, you like to max Janna's Q first or her E? Same thing here.

ReZisT Lust1 votes

not everyone maxs e you know.

chipndip11 votes

People that win the most max E.

ReZisT Lust1 votes

That still doesnt change anything.

chipndip11 votes

It actually changes everything. It shows what's more important in her kit. Her poke is so lack-luster she'd rather convert to using a very defensive play style rather than using it to gain pressure and snowball an advantage. Her poke isn't a highlight anymore.

Works well on master yi. There's a diamond 1 Master Yi main who duos with a Lulu support and she always ults him and he always pentas.

I think Lulu is unique because her abilities are extremely reliable. Her W, E, and R are point and click. This allows her to shut down certain enemies easier than other supports. A prime example is Vayne. Provided that Lulu doesn't die instantly, she can polymorph Vayne with W if she gets too aggressive and she can grant vision of her with E when Vayne ults. Champions like Leona, who can also shut down Vayne, need to land their abilities and a decent Vayne can probably dodge Leona's root and ultimate.

Now this seems to be one of the better answers in this thread, if not the best one. Good on you.
