Riven probably is going to need nerfs with the PBE changes

#Not bothering with circlejerks. I have no interest in having the same arguments with the same 5 anti-Riven board members who repeat the same couple vague gameplay philosophies. So I am not going to argue with the people who come here just to say she has 0 counterplay, is permanently overpowered or is blatantly broken. This is a reasonable discussion post for if Riven will need nerfs and what they should be, to go alone with her planned changes.

#But Riven may still need nerfs Basically Riven has had a nice, even, statistical balance for a while now with only a brief surge during the Lethality meta. This is a statistical fact. But now the changes to itemization have not only favored her, but for those who don't know on the PBE they are looking to replace Animation canceling with a more reliable, less buggy, intentional system. This is going to be more reliable to use and easier to understand by comparison while otherwise playing basically the same.

What this means is her skillfloor is changing, narrowing her absurdly bad play for newer players to her. This combined with itemization changes means she is likely to shoot up in popularity and winrate, and following soon after that ban rate.

#It is in Riven's best interest As somebody who enjoys playing Riven, it is in my best interest she receive any necessary nerfs before those changes leave PBE(that is assuming they do), not three months after they hit live. So I can keep playing her in peace without fear of a 25% ban rate because she was made too good in my tier of play.

The thing is she is always decently strong in high tiers(though those statistics are hard to read as it is mostly one-tricks playing her Diamond+) where this won't help much, but the itemization changes already have brought her up a bit there. So this isn't nerfing high tier for the sake of low tier. It is nerfing all tiers for the sake of all tiers.

#How should Riven be nerfed? In my opinion the ideal nerfs for Riven would not hit her early game. Statistics and my knowledge from matchup guides of high tier players and personal experience in low tiers, is that Riven actually doesn't do that well into most matchups except at specific powerspikes. The exceptions are matchups vs champions who just have no answer to her in their kit like Vlad or Swain.

Now ideally, Riot will decide on a specific nerf for how these changes effect her. And they would probably better know than me how to do it. But I invite Riven mains and players to state below what they would be willing to give to keep her ban-rate from skyrocketing as these changes and ten bans goes through.

#The nerf I would choose For me, it would be raising the cooldown of her ultimate at later levels and making it so once she burns her ultimate R2 she loses the R1 effect. I think this not only is thematically fitting but was constantly something that bugged a lot of people. If a Riven makes the decision to blow her R2 early she still gets to gain that 20% bonus AD and bonus ranges for the full 15 seconds, meaning there is no repercussions for popping it early and Riven can still be absurdly powerful for a full 15 seconds.

What this would do is give Riven not only fewer engages with 40% cdr(in case you don't know Riven rarely wants to fight with her ult down) and gives her more solid decision making in deciding the optimal timing of burning her R2, which increases the risk of burning it early resulting in early loss of her AD or burning it late and not getting use of it. But that is me.

#You may disagree Which is fine. I am a Silver Shyvana main. I may do a lot of research for my posts but I am by no means a Riven main I only have 120 games on her. I am sure some Riven mains feel a different approach would be better. Post below your thoughts and ideas. Do you think she even needs a nerf with these changes? What reasonable nerf would you suggest?

Well as I said in my other post, this is the only major post I wanted to make until I complete my climb unless something specific comes up. Thank you for reading and see you on the rift.

Honestly, that was something that always irked my too. Whenever she actually uses Wind slash it looks like she shatters her sword again and hits you with runic shards of her blade.

Yet she merrily just whacks you with the same gigantic sword even after using her R2. I'd say it would be a pretty good nerf as it wouldn't impact good Rivens but actually punish miscalculating your R2 damage, making her worse for casual riven players.

And if someone says she shouldn't get the full shield when using "Valor" to retreat he's just asking to get slapped. We don't inhibit Sion from using his R to "strategically relocate" either.

Fair enough, Rubick who commented above agree with you(a master tier player). But she may still need some minor nerfs due to itemization changes. She may need no nerfs. In the end Riot will decide that. My only hope is if her win-rate continues to rise and the changes make her too strong in moderately experienced hands, that Riot consider a fair nerf before they leave PBE so my top laner isn't banned for a couple weeks or months pending nerfs.

Either way I really appreciate your input in sharing your thoughts here.

Her winrate dropped by 1% on this patch.

BC, arpen, lethality, every thing she builds except the lifesteal items got nerfed, and tanks are getting buffed and buffed in the future.

You're blind then, as you didnt see meddler post on the other thread.

Even if they are weaker, its riot games, riot games NEVER lets tank stay weak, by 1 or 2 patches they are going to give zac, maokai, naut whoever 20 different buffs and they'll be the only picks in lcs top lane.

Mira Arya Enthe8 votes

Jungle tanks and support tanks have been crap since S7 began. Top lane tanks have had a couple good picks and otherwise been crap. Not sure what you are on.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

Will not argue with you on jgl/sup tanks, those have been in a really bad spot ever since the beginning of S7.

But top lane tanks used to be fairly strong, even beyond the ones played in LCS. In fact, Malphite, Zac, Sion, the other tanks on top of the competitive staples (Nautilus, Gragas, Poppy, Maokai, Shen) had positive winrates (52%+). And Galio was moving there, als well, as people began to better understand his new kit. So, there are no real top lane tanks save Cho'Gath (who got buffs and has more of a meta problem) left to be crap!

Mira Arya Enthe2 votes

Well top has had some strong tanks. However it has been a couple specific ones at a time who were clearly broken in laning at the time(Nautilus and Poppy for example) yet they still are behind many many top lane carries for viability.

Yeah, agreed, Riven isn't all animation canceling, she also needs a lot of game knowledge being a squishy, low range, melee carry. Yes, melee and low range are separate things.

Ahristocats7 votes

wow, easier animation cancelling i wanted them to be removed in favor of buff compensation so i would be able to play her, might see what happens with those changes

anyway, i don't like "nerf this before it goes through" . Riven is an easy-to-predict champion (imo at least) and even when played by a main i don't have troubles against her

So let's not make threads on things that aren't live yet just like i didn't make any threads about the tank update before it went on live

Mira Arya Enthe3 votes

To be honest I only find the Fast Combo hard to do (Q>Move>AA>Q>Move>AA>Q>Move>AA) the rest are fairly easy to do in my opinion. For example going E>T>W>AA>Q is pretty easy. You just push the buttons in those orders.

While I respect what you are saying, I would personally prefer a minor overnerf one patch than overpowered for one patch as a player of any champion. Because I'd rather get to play my pick at a mild disadvantage than not be able to play them because they are P/B then see a barrage of complaints on the boards demanding they be gutted.

But that is me, I understand and respect your PoV and patience. And heck, I may have even suggested hitting the wrong areas for a Riven nerf. I know that. Anyway, thank you for your input.

Ahristocats3 votes

the problem with that logic is that you can't predict how a champion will do with a change

Riot tried to nerf amumu W damage because "he would be broken if his passive was really true damage" and what happened is amumu win rate dropping by 2% (leagueofgraph) with 7.8 (don't have the win rate of 7.9 yet) and it was supposed to be a buff for him with riot making his passive really true damage yet his win rate decreased hard.

i don't have other examples but idk if one time it was good to rush things

and you know this is the escuse used by riot/people about why riot doesn't buff/nerf all champions at the same time during a patch like Icefrog does in dota2

so that's fair to me

Automated Riven3 votes

This is largely what is being made more consistant. If I understand the changes correctly then these wont make the fast combo any easier to pull off per se. It will simply make it more reliable when you do pull it off. instead of pulling it off perfectly and have server lag cancel an auto for you. I honestly dont expect her winrate to do anything but drop as the wannabe riven mains flood the games trying to figure out what they never understood how to do.

I'm not entirely sure she needs nerfs, as much as I dislike the champion. She's often pretty easy to read in terms of what her next move is, and always has the counterplay of staying at range.

I don't think those things are changing at all, but maybe her strengths well be too strong, if that makes sense, in which case I think her R cd would be a pretty good area to hit her yes.

Mira Arya Enthe2 votes

Thanks for your input. I am surprised by the number of people who think Riven is mostly fine in balance on this post. Makes me happy as she is my main top laner. She may need no nerfs at all, which I hope the PBE and live confirms.

As a Riven OTP I'd like to share my point of view as I am very doubtful that Riven will actually need nerfs.

The itemization changes of the last recent patches have not been a net positive in my opinion as they have crushed whatever was left of Riven's early snowballing itemisation. The BC changes do not only mess up her buildpath but also weakened her core item #1. You now are left with the choice to give up the early game and just build BC or delay your BC and build Caulfields anyways. Lethality is mostly strong when stacked, so Ghostblade got weaker and the Ghostblade rush aswell - and considering how junglers get increasingly tanky lethality is mostly a troll stat nowadays.

That means you HAVE to turn to Deaths Dance. Now, as we all know it got significantly nerfed so that's pretty nice. But it's still extremely offensive and just another super late powerspike - which is especially impactful in higher elos (as games tend to be shorter the higher the elo is). Another side worry of the new BC is that easy matchups like Darius have went to being "normal" up to favorable in the later stages in the game. Kinda annoying.

In addition to this, we also shouldn't forget about the mastery damage nerfs across the board - having so much less damage in addition to opting for sustain/survivability instead of damage means that Riven has a much harder time oneshotting squieshies - especially in the midgame.

What this means is her skillfloor is changing, narrowing her absurdly bad play for newer players to her. This combined with itemization changes means she is likely to shoot up in popularity and winrate, and following soon after that ban rate.

Keep in mind though that the mouse input doesn't change too much (atleast that's how I understand it), it's just more consistent results especially for higher pings (yay 70 ping me!).

Keep in mind that her winrate still hovers ~50% in platinum (leagueofgraphs is consistent with lolalytics and op.gg, champion.gg is shit nowadays) which is actually rather low considering how Riven players have in average incredibly high games played on her. That means that she is actually rather weak right now from a purely statistical standpoint. Her learning curve is a very healthy 43% for beginners to 55% for experienced players.

I find this absolutely terrible as it would punish you for a rewarding quick ultimate that should have won you a teamfight. Rather than that - even if Riven would turn out to be too strong I highly doubt that it would be by much (and even then probably not in 7.10) so I'd prefer to simply revert the most recent ultimate buff.

Now, after I explained why I doubt that she will be overbearing I still think that she will be a very good pick in the future - for somewhat different reasons. History has shown that Jungle and Tank have a very specific relationship when it comes to carry and tank picks. Whenever junglers were very tanky (remember Cinderhulk?) squieshy picks like Riven would do well. Now that Riot has clearly begun to push for tanky junglers (whether they achieved that aim yet may be debatable, but they will certainly keep on forcing it) we can probably expect Riven to shine. Those changes to her Q / QE will surely help while DD may help her sustain through the mediocre damage output from tanks. She will probably be in a similiar spot to tank toplaners in the peak of lethality meta: pretty damn strong as long as she doesn't have another AD assassin in her team but probably not quite banworthy as there are quite a few other squieshy splitpushers who want to do the same.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Why does she shine in tank jungler meta?

TEA Nietzsche 1 votes

Generally teams want to have a healthy mix of everything - which is why even in lethality meta having a tank was very appealing (forced enemy team to get LW just for him).

The great thing about tank jungle meta is that when tank junglers are successfull they sort of "paint" the meta. Remember Cinderhulk? It slows down the game flow compared to carry meta which means that everyone has to adjust. We will see DPS midlane mages that can deal with bulky frontlines, there will be less incentive to have an early dominating botlane because you won't snowball it as hard with a tank jungler so we may even see tankier supports come back that got counterd by mages.

All this means that the meta focuses on late teamfights - but Riven is the exact opposite, she wants to splitpush 24/7. Now, the great thing about tanks is that they do not skirmish too well, especially against sustain. Their lockdown sure is great, but they lack the damage to actually focus Riven down which means that she can either escape or just 1v2 when fed. They are also slow which allows Riven to outrotate them - atleast in an unorganized environment.

Now, this is of course speculation based on Cinderhulk meta but I really don't see why she wouldn't be as great as she was back then.

Troll for Trump1 votes

But in order to splitpush successfully, or effectively, you should be ahead. Only when you are ahead, either in kills or cs, is it effective, because you're an actual threat.

Basically same rules as all skirmishers. With tank jglers(and cc), won't that make Riven more vulnerable to ganks, while being less effective in teamfights?

idk, there's too many things to predict.

Difference between now and back then is Riven's itemization.

And the changes hurt cleaver and lethality users, yeah.

TEA Nietzsche 3 votes

{quoted}

But in order to splitpush successfully, or effectively, you should be ahead. Only when you are ahead, either in kills or cs, is it effective, because you're an actual threat.

Oh no. Splitpush is always better unless you know that your team gets shit on 4v5 so badly that they need you there (although I tend to split even then because there is usually no point). Or if you know that their toplaner can not only 1v1 you but also chase you down. Why would you need to be ahead though, just push the lane in and run if you can't 1v1, you should be able to escape a single champion.

Basically same rules as all skirmishers. With tank jglers(and cc), won't that make Riven more vulnerable to ganks, while being less effective in teamfights?

I think Riven should be able to sustain through/escape such ganks with DD. Did you play Riven/see her during the Cinderhulk patches? Or just look at leagueofgraphs, it was probably one of Rivens strongest phases.

Difference between now and back then is Riven's itemization.

And the changes hurt cleaver and lethality users, yeah.

Eh, lethality sucks against tanks anyways so I wouldn't care about that. And DD+BC is probably not weaker than BC+GB/boots against atnks.

Rexxiee3 votes

So you're just circlejerking fishing for upvotes like everyone here, good way to lose your credibility with this post.

The changes are not making it any easier to animation cancel, you probably didnt even try it once on pbe, they are just removing the randomless from it (Q has varying lockout times instead of fixed one that varies by .1~.2s, etc).

But good job being a clueless low elo like 99% of the ppl that post here.

Mira Arya Enthe10 votes

Yep you caught me. I just totally hate my primary top laner and want her nerfed for no reason.

Removing the randomness of animation cancelling and making it a fixed and intentional numbers makes it easier to perform and more reliable when it is performed. It may not need nerfs at all, that is what PBE is for, to find out. But I would rather my champions be slightly underpowered for a patch or two than permabanned for a patch or two between the itemization changes and the fixing of her animation cancelling. And I admit both in the OP and all my comments I may by totally wrong about her needing nerfs or what nerfs are needed. I never claimed to be perfectly informed, this is a preemptive measure so if she does end up too strong on PBE(or worse, on live) the circle jerkers will have less leverage to just blast a bunch of retarded changes like these that have been popular in recent history.

"Riven shouldn't be allowed to get a shield when using her E away from enemies." "Riven's Q should be made single target." "Riven's E and Q cooldown should be increased unless she hits an enemy so she cannot run away."

I knew with this post I would take some flack from Riven haters and Riven mains. But I would rather post about it now than later.

Misinformed or not, anybody who knows me on the boards knows I love Riven and furiously defend her. Look at my arguments with Permabanned Garen, VulDread and others for examples.

honestly im just impressed how calm, cool, and to the point this post was. I like your ult idea, personally I liked riots idea of "Flow" on her as not only did it give a Resource bar and counterplay, but if her Flow determined the power of her ult instead of missing HP on an enemy (it is that right? I don't play her the kit doesnt click with my style) then it's much more visual counterplay.

ofc much like your opinions on changes mine are probably biased. I would like this because as someone who fights rivens more than plays them, i'd like this bar because when i see it full, i KNOW she will R2 soon and can ready a spell, dash, block, something (if i have it) Instead of her just smashing every key when ults up (what it feels like anyways lol)

Troll for Trump2 votes

By basically refusing to discuss with people who disagree with you and refute any evidence they present, you are the one circlejerking.

That out of the way, Riven doesn't need nerfs as of right now. Should be monitored, but no nerfs needed. People need to adapt to her new kit and mechanics before making decisions, just like what happened the last time she got a kit update.

Oh, and everyone keeps stating that the tank update was bad because of the winrate %s, but the buffs to tank stats and nerfs to dmg items are pretty big.

A lot less hp, more armor/mr in items (as well as more items to build). Even squishies get some armor with GA.

% armor nerfs hurt cleaver users (riven included), and lethality doesn't do so well against an overall increase of armor across the board (because lethality is flat).

Mira Arya Enthe4 votes

That's circlejerking. It's the same discussion over and over because you constantly ignore and refute anything people say that contradicts with your own, despite whatever is being presented.

it has to do with staying on topic.

Once again, ANOTHER instance of hypocrisy.

You ignored the entire bottom half of my comment and only focused on replying to the first sentence. The first sentence was a nod to your first paragraph, while the actual comment talks about the topic of your post.

You say that what we say is pointless and irrelevant to the topic, but you go on a tangent in the OP, and then proceed to do the same in this very reply to my comment.

Ay lmao random downvotes WITHOUT any people replying

Mira Arya Enthe4 votes

I had no reason to address the bottom half. I agree with it. But the accusation that staying on topic and not wanting to discuss "lolriven 490 dashes 0 counterplay whn plyed right" with people for the 4 millionth time is circle jerking is absurd. So I addressed that.

Troll for Trump2 votes

But most people don't say that.

"lolriven 490 dashes 0 counterplay whn plyed right"

is an EXTREME oversimplification of what people say.

In my case, she doesn't have no counterplay whatsoever, but less counterplay than you would in other champs, because of the initiative her kit provides.

You know how one of the issues you mentioned with Riven was her lack of clarity?

Yeah, you can't see those abilities midcast sometimes, because she animation cancels them between her abilities. If you can't even see the abilities, how are you supposed to interrupt them with your kit? Even if you catch them, your abilities will usually have slower cast times than Riven's.

Mira Arya Enthe7 votes

I have 2 master tier and 2 diamond tier players on this very post who have made their stance on Riven "She is easy to predict and easy to read what she is going to do next" in one wording or another. I highly disagree. Sure low tier players might miss stuff she does. Many low tier players also don't know Darius outer axe is worse then the inner or that Sion can get his knockup off earlier than full charge. The game should be designed around Diamond+ with only necessary balance tweaks to keep low tier from being hell.

People have created this montage and bias based delusion that Riven does super unpredictable, unbelievably fast plays. But Kassadin can unload his burst faster than she does with more element of surprise.

People who say she has no counterplay or almost no counterplay when played right are foolish. Even a bias hater like Tidal Tyrant is intelligent and skilled enough to know better despite hating Riven and being countered by her.

And among many other reasons THAT is why I would prefer to stay on topic. The anti-Riven circlejerk has nothing to back up 90% of their arguments except vague gameplay philosophies they made up like "resourceless means longer cooldowns" which absolutely have no actual backing other than a self assumed principle. As many sourceless champions have quite spammable spells. In fact most do. From Kat to Shyvana.

I have nothing to say to anti-Riven circlejerkers and nothing to argue with them because they are too busy acting redundant to one another to actually do some research on how Riven and the game works before spouting knowledgeless things like "Riven is a pure aggression, all in early game fighter so she shouldn't get a shield unless dashing on an enemy and her Q needs to be single target."

If you argue with the willfully ignorant they will drag you down to their level of arguments. I have tried to talk to said people. But that is not the purpose of this post. Which is why the header paragragh is there. To prevent people like you from needlessly sidetracking the topic into salty rage posting about your ideals of how League is suppose to be designed and how Riven doesn't follow that design.

While I agree she needs some visual clarity. Claims of her being broken because "erhmagerd 9001 dashes counterplay goes away with skill no CD pogchamp ez champ 4 nubs no resource op rito nerf" that I see all over these boards and reddit. Has no place on this topic.
