It is literally a banshee's veil passive. In addition, now that they moved his voidlings to his W, he is now a bit healthier to play against, although that passive can be annoying. However, he usually gets it once in a teamfight, so once you get it down, it stays down, unless he retreats to the backline, which is not what a battlemage wants to do.

banshee's veil eats one spell

malz passive eats multiple spells if you do not time your combo properly and IF you don't have back up to engage on him he will solo you out with his ult. Going in on a malzahar as a non tank champion in a teamfight is suicide

It's just like a lot of passives; you have to play around it. Do you engage on Poppy in lane with her shield? No. Do you destroy a Gangplank's barrels when you know he has his q off cooldown? You can, but you are going to get punished for it. Do you trade with a Vladimir when he has his Crimson Rush? No, no you don't. May Malz be a little overtuned? Probably. But does his passive have counterplay? Yes, yes it does.

against poppy? yes i would, if i can land my combo i would engage on her. that bitch ass shield is nothing if i engange on her and avoid her Q. She does no damage what so ever if she misses Q

Why would i destroy gangplank's barrels when i can just manuever aroudn the barrels?

Do i trade with vlad? yes that champion is trash

i can't USE a spell level 1 against a malz or else i will be put at a cooldown and mana disadvantage. I can't use an auto or else im going to get run downed by voidlings

If i get his passive down he just retreats behind his minion wave and pushes me into my tower

I don't understand you riot, malzahar, or both dick riders. that champion is completely bullshit.
