A Needed Change to Eternals

First things first: I know Eternals are a bit controversial. This thread isn't about pricing, availability, or even the specific Eternals, so I'd appreciate it if we kept the comments free of that -- there are a number of other threads where you can discuss that stuff.

This is specifically about the design of the Personal Bests / in-game displays, and why it needs adjustment.

Imagine you're playing Nasus. The game goes on past 50 minutes, and you end up with upwards of 1200 bonus damage on your Q. Cool! A personal best!

You get a pop-up. And you never see one again, because now you have to break 1200 stacks.

Given that the pop-ups are part of the feeling of accomplishment, this sucks.

There two easy solutions here, which can be used separately or combined together:

  1. Make personal bests tied to game time (and still show a "highest ever").
  2. Include breakpoint highlights.

In the first, the game is divided into sections between 2 and 5 minutes long. When you beat a personal best during one of those sections (based on total elapsed game time -- so personal best for 0-5 minutes, personal best for 0-10 minutes, etc.), you're alerted (most Q stacks by 20 minutes! Most Feast stacks by 15 minutes!)

In the second, the personal best is maintained, but you get a callout for beating either a set value (400+ Q stacks by 20 minutes!) or a personal average (say, beating the top 75% of your performance for that Eternal for that given time in the game). Of the two I favor the personal average, as it means that a player of any skill can slowly see themselves improving.

What these suggestions do is ensure that the feel-good (and visually appreciable) part of the Eternal is more commonly present as a reward for doing well, and not skewed by games where you end up stomping or in an incredibly long grind.

Please consider making this adjustment.

I like the idea of average over total.

So instead of I got 1200 stacks it's I got 20 stacks/minute. At intervals 15/30/45 minutes

I think a personal best can work, but with an addition of "you beat the average/ your average" prompt.

So if the community averages 400 stacks and you past that, then you get a prompt. If your average 500 stacks a game. Then you get a proc when you pass your average.

This way you can still have that super good 1200 game that can go on the leader board, but also more procs that still feel good.

in essence the idea was good, they just ruined it by making it paid, barring the occasional whale no one is gonna want to look forward to some overrated xbox popup.

no amount of sugar coating would make it actually good except:

  • actually making it worth the cost by putting ACTUAL work into it (year in review of every single year had the exact same data, so believe it or not no actual data was """""updated""""" thats just bullshit, its a literal copy-paste of whats already there) by making a mastery 8 or hell even like a golden chroma of the base skin.

  • making it free

without one or the other the community will never be appeased regardless.

in either case though, you do actually make a good point, its no longer a personal best, so personal average would probably be a much better metric.

I mean it's almost like they were designed with no real thought into them. Imagine paying a single dime for one.

no, or the chat would be spammed with achievements and i cant even focus on my ranked play

PrettyGirlsFeet9/6/2019, 4:47:31 PM3 votes

it doesn't need any changes people just need to accept that riot isn't gonna give them everything for free

ShyImagoghnar9/6/2019, 6:36:31 PM3 votes

it's predatory, desperate, degenerate bullshit and the only thing that needs to change is the boolean value of its existence

I think that getting a pop-up that covers the entire screen is pretty obnoxious and could rlly f my day since I already don't look at my screen when I play

Good post @The Djinn Shame most players don't take the time to read or just don't care though.

I don't really see the point to be honest.

Either it's a personal best or it isn't.

Setting parameters to increase the frequency of these pop-ups just seems too much like the "everybody gets a medal" mentality, and that's after disregarding the fact you have to pay for it in the first place.

In theory, if Riot removes the "personal best" part and just compares your performance to the average, e.g. "you have more stacks at this point in the game than 71% of other players!", they could simply lie and make up whatever numbers they want that tell you you're awesome. As long as it doesn't lie too hard ("I just reconnected at 15:00, why is it telling me I'm in the 85th percentile"), I don't think anyone would wise up. Even if someone did suspect that something was amiss, what evidence could they possibly provide? Riot controls all the data.

It would save resources on implementation, maintenance, and server load.

As a Kindred Kindred main the best achievement is 26 marks in my passive, and thats something I would like to show off in the eternals rather then how much I traveled with the Q. At least is content for the champion I played since the last time Kindred had something is the Super galaxy Kindred

What about Varus I don't play the champ but they are saying multi roots with R but doesn't it only hit 1 person? If so then that needs to be changed

Just make customizable skins that evolve as you get achievements through the Eternals system.

Boom fixed.

Personal bests seem like a bad idea in general.

Even if you break it up by game time, you're just going to see less and less of those popups.

It'd probably be best if the Eternal compared you to the population every X minutes.

"Wow! You have more Q stacks at 30 minutes than 85% of players!"
