honestly how do you play soraka?

I mained soraka in s3 before her rework and now only play her once or twice per season to see if shes still bad. I honestly dont understand how people play her. Shes so squishy has no reliable hard cc and her heals literally kill her.

For comparison: I main Kayle who is also a heal support with an ult that is used to save allies. Kayle also doesnt have any hard movement skill and has no hard cc at all. Why is kayle effective while soraka isnt?

  1. the range on her heal leaves her at a safe distance for someone with no escape
  2. her ult is useful in today's high damage meta.
  3. she can self heal (notably)

compared to soraka who:

  1. her w range leaves her in a terrible position to heal anyone except the very back line which shes usually in anyways trying to land q.
  2. sorakas ult is honestly not good, even when used on low health allies with the 10% rune it might be able to what? block the base damage of a single enemy damage ult? Thats crap compared to a cc ult which prevents at least one enemy from doing any damage or for example kayles ult which makes her single target guaranteed to live for 2-3 seconds.
  3. soraka's self heal is pretty garbage in most fights because it is so slow compared to enemy damage output.

In addition to this, most of sorakas skills interrupt her movement so her slow goat legs are even worse even though her lack of even a speed buffing skill aside from q which isnt notably fast (and passive which isnt useful during chases or escapes) makes her super easy to catch. Then theres the good ole mechanic where if youve healed 3 times youve lost almost a third of your health. Then theres the root from her e which is so delayed it literally requires the enemy to already be cc'd by an ally or for the enemy to make a moderate mistake to land.

All of this is exacerbated by the fact that she's always focused because of her role as the squishy healer.

most immediate changes required to give her some semblance of usefulness soraka needs a major rework to give her useful damage abilities, useful cc, and a heal which doesnt kill herself and that can also be used on herself. But in the mean time:

  1. increase the range on her heal to at least 900. She is too squishy and has no cc or mobility, she should not have to be within 550 range of her target to heal.
  2. Reduce the detonation time of equinox to 1s at most and refund some cooldown if no enemy champions are rooted or cause it to persist after detonation for a few seconds and root enemies on contact. This will at least give her a bit of reliability or zone control instead of a nearly useless form of cc that enemies just walk through or that soraka has to rely on enemies to walk into/stay inside of to proc.

Potential changes for a rework P: give her something useful like each successful q stores a charge and once she has x charges she can blink a short distance q: remove the heal over time mechanic and focus this skill on being an effective dps skill, as it is now it's pretty poor due to the delay at range w: revert this to prerework status and tweak ratios to be comparable to similar heals. Soraka says "to heal and protect" but all she does is heal, add an armor buff back and include an equal mr buff. e: this needs a complete rework, needs to be significantly more useful or the cooldown needs to be significantly less. Maybe a single target skill where she buffs a friendly target to heal for a single damage instance (instead of take damage) from an enemy champ and upon blocking damage it will cc the source either with a movement debuff or damage debuff, maybe if it prevents a deat hit will stun the source of damage. idk im sure she could get some really cool e skill here which she really needs becuase currently it's her worst skill (which is saying a lot considering her current w takes her health) r: this should at least increase ally durability for a short duration probably like 15/20/25% for like 4/5/6 seconds. also allow it to optionally be channeled to more slowly regenerate health over time but while providing 30/40/50% damage reduction.

build the 2 core items on her, item 3504 and item 3107 and then build warmogs after finally going any type of resis needed that has HP on it. You can now heal until you have 5 hp and wait 5 seconds and go back to healing.

what about in lane though when youll only have 1 or maybe 2 items beside boots and warding item? soraka with a censer is still super easy to kill.

that is what her E and Q are for. If for some reason you have a battleraka(A soraka that for some reason face tanks) she places her E under her and then Q's for the heal and the regen heal it gives. So they can get snared and you might get away with your regen. But frankly Soraka should be behind a majority of your team being a heal bot. Unless she goes AP, which will almost never happen, because of the item expenses she would just sit back and heal as many as possible.

Even if you only have 1 or 2 items you should always have a item 1006 in your inventory just so you don't have to always back while in lane.

so tanky raka could perhaps combo q and e to relatively come out even against a melee champ in a short skirmish. ap/utility raka could never regen enough hp to make up for as much as she would lose from waiting for e to root an enemy. She simply has no viable defence. She can't run and she can't fight, she can only heal others and even then it hurts her to do so. Like her kit is just so bad in general. I mean if you have some serious peel on your team then she might be a useful ally but without that shes just a squishy liability.

Soraka main here, and I'll just go over a few small things that I do when playing Soraka.

  1. Max your W first, making the effectiveness and cooldown super low (1.5 seconds later game).

-1.2- Add item 3504 anditem 3174 . Each time you land a Q, you get a bunch of extra health to dump on someone, plus your autos and Aeri will charge Grail super fast. The extra 250 from Grail is huge when added to your base heal and AP ratio, not to mention % heal power.

  1. Invest in defensive items that at the very least, delay damage. I'm not a big fan of Redemption, and go with item 3190 instead so that the shield instantly stops you from dying immediately. It's great for the self peel, along with keeping allies in the fight too. Not to mention, extension Armor and MR stop you from straight up popping.

  2. Side note, item 3109 is super great on her, as you get free healing from your allies, which in turn, allow you to heal more. It's a constant loop.

  3. Hold onto your Silence for disengage. If a Leona jumps on your carry, put the field on your carry. See a Katarina going to jump to a dagger for resets or ult? Put the field on the dagger. Draven needs to catch an axe? Screw up his pathing and make him drop it. It's super troll honestly, and it's power lies in its ability to interrupt, not lock down.

For runes, you've got a LOT of paths:

Guardian for huge AoE teams, with domination for secondary. Taking Taste of Blood and Ravenous Hunter make your health cost much less of an issue.

Aeri, with Font Of Life and Revitalize for more team healing and constant mini shields from Aeri. Ultimate Hat is usually a must, but 40% CDR is super easy.

Aeri with Inspiration secondary, taking Magical Footwear for the free money and Cosmic Insight for that CDR cap. Also pairs will run item 3158 for more Exhaust uses.

And just remember to be there for anyone that is dying.

I always used to max w first but all of the guides i read on her max q first now, why do you think they advise that?

The match i played today I built grail and lucidity and was going to build censer but didnt get the chance. I see how they both work super well with soraka for her heals but they generally do for most enchanters.

How soon do you recommend buying defensive items such as locket? Would you go like boots+2nd teir supp item>grail+censer>defensive items? I feel like shes so lacking defensively that shes forced to rush a defensive itme which leaves her heals weaker.

I vs'd a voli supp and hec jungle. Hec was basically impossible to root even using e on me or my adc, voli i rooted about half of the time but it was usually only by using e on myself or my adc by which time hes within range to flip anyways so that really didnt help.

After reading 3 guides on moba fire i decided on aerie+Fol and revitalize bc it seemd pretty straight forward for a healer supp like soraka, it seems comparably effective to other enchanters but nothing super great for soraka specifically.

Idk my main issue with her is that shes just so easy to kill, like i mentioned a few lines above, shes so squishy i feel like the only way to have a chance at living is by rushing tank items but that makes your heals weaker than if you had been rushing things with ap or %heal.

If you gotta build defensive, build Grail> Merc Treads/Ninja Tabitha> then Locket or Vow, depending on matchup. Staying in the backline is hard for strong engage, but she still has that silence. Maybe wait for them to blow a spell, then silence the rest of their combo (they're already in, so now they have to fight their way out). Unfortunately, one of Soraka's weaknesses is being caught out, because she has no reliable way to get someone off of her. It's a team game though, so sticking around a teammate should be your first goal.

Guardian will shield you as well, so if you ult, you and your partner that get dove will get that big shield too. (It's got nice AP scaling, so I usually go the Spellthief support line)

Out of Kayle's 4 actives 2 are straight up damaging spells with 1 having a tiny bit of utility in the slow. Her heal is lower in effect than Soraka's. She's not a support. All of Soraka's abilities have decent utility. The Q is a long range poking-zoning tool that heals with the rejuvenation effect. The w is a straight up impactful heal. The e is another excellent zoning tool/cc and her ult is another extremely impactful heal. Combined with effects from items it makes her a very useful support. As opposed to Kayle.

Just imagine a Kayle vs Soraka lane. You try to walk up to do damage/poke, a meteor falls on you head, the enemy heals a significant portion of what you dished out. Trade, team Soraka. You walk up again and deal some damage, Soraka heals it for cheaper. If you accidentally overextend you find yourself stuck in a field of stars 1v2-ing the enemy duo. If you hang back Soraka walks up and keeps dropping meteors on you and your adc until the end of days. You try to push her away, she zones you off with E, lands an aa on your adc or you before comforably walking away. Just matchupwise, in a straight on match against each other these champions show which can and which cannot support.

I've mained kayle for like 10 months straight now and I beat soraka in lane every time when adc's and jungle's are equal.

Lets compare: q: -kayle can guarantee damage and slow. Sorakas q is easy af to dodge as a poke skill, especially after boots. Only during middle of teamfights when people arent paying attention or concerned with her little damage will it land reliably. In lane her q success is usually about 1/4 assuming both she and my adc are of comparable skill.

w: -sorakas single instance heal is weaker than kayles until soraka gets about 170-175 ap. Assuming soraka builds boots then censer and grail shes still behind by ~50-60 ap (accounting for transcendence, gathering storm, and dissonance). If shes rushes ap for item 5 (she already has item 3158 item 3098 item 3504 item 3174) then she will finally outpace kayles single instance healing. There's no way supps will get to item 5 during lane phase. Additionally, kayle supp maxes w first whereas most soraka supps max q first so kayles single instance healing is more than sorakas in lane. -soraka can output more hps than kayle by a significant amount however so we shouldnt discount that but unfortunately for soraka, in today's meta sustained hps is less useful than burst hps. Plus with each heal weakening her own health, in addition to having only 60% of the range of kayles heal it quickly becomes detrimental to sustain her max healing output and makes her a huge target to enemies.

e: -pretty mixed bag on this one, for both kayle and soraka this is their weakest skill as a support. Soraka can relatively instantly guarantee the damage but kayle can do more damage with 3-4 attacks. Mechanically soraka has an advantage with a silence as well as a root but unfortunately for her, the root is extremely easy to walk out of and is really only proccable when enemies are already cc'd by something more than her q or if they simply make a mistake and walk/stand in it. Effectively this skill for soraka is in most cases a .75second silence which has its uses against some champs but in general is pretty bad for someone with no other hard cc or escape and who is extremely squishy. Vs kayle 90% of the time kayle's e is better simply because the only time soraka could reliably make as much contribution with her e is by using it on kayle right before kayle would want to ult which has never happened in the numerous matches ive played against soraka simply because although equinox has a long range, kayles w range keeps her far enough away from soraka that it would be extremely dangerous for soraka to position to use it in that way.

r: -in lane kayle has a significant advantage here. Between levels 6 and 11 and assuming soraka has either grail or censer and shes ulting a target at <=40% hp then she will be healing for ~300hp which is ~3-4 basic attacks from an adc at that level with 1 item not considering damage buffs. AS at that level will be about .7-.75 (higher counting AS items). So against a single adc who is only basic attacking, sorakas ult wins. Unfortunately for soraka an adc has abilities and those abilities increase their damage output by a lot, in addition to that, the enemy support is also contributing damage and then of course there are junglers who also deal damage comparable to the adc. This means that against a directed assault by anything more than just an adc basic attacking a target, kayle's ult is superior to sorakas in lane. Only in teamfights against heavy dot or heavy aoe would sorakas ult potentially be more useful than kayles. Additionally sorakas ult cooldown is 60% longer than kayles which further weakens its comparable effectiveness in lane.

Fighting a soraka as kayle is done very similarly to fighting as soraka just with less pokes and less danger. Kayle would never go in to try and poke with e or q, even against someone aside from soraka. Q and e are kept solely for during engagements, e is also used when hitting towers for ranged safety. Kalye v soraka is very boring lane where occasionally soraka might land her q then kayle waits another minute for her to land another and then heals her adc back to full. When a fight breaks out or there is a gank post 6 then kayle puts out more dps than soraka while mitigating as much or more damage to her lane than soraka all the while not being constantly minirooted every time she has to heal or ult and while being at a far safer distance than soraka. Plus kayle's w speedboost prevents ganks more readily than sorakas unreliable e root or quickly removed e silence.

Kayle outclasses soraka at everything that matters aside from healing someone in a different lane and subjectively her skill graphics are nicer.

i can do that on kayle though and not have to worry about being able to be deleted by an enemy bc im at low health

Warmog Soraka is like a limitless HP battery. She's definitely not the easiest support in the game. I think she's good if you can master proper positioning where you are within healing range of your allies without taking damage so warmog regen is active. Then you can heal like no other champ in the game. Then after that the trick is to know how to use your E correctly to completely disrupt a team fight. Her Q is lame and hard to land but can definitely contribute to some non negligible damage. So I'd argue she's far from useless. She's just a true support that will make your carry look good.

As a Soraka main S7 with a 1,250,000 mastery I can tell you kayle can't beat Soraka for utility. Apart from her core items, you should be building her the same as any other champion, depending on what your enemy comp is and what your team lacks. You forget that kiting as soraka is important causing an additional 50 dmg banana per auto, Sorakas passive allows her to not cancel her previous movement command when casting spells (not inc E) which allows you to q your enemy whilst attacking or fleeing. The q damage isn't as important as realising that one q is equal in slow as an exhaust taking 30% movement speed for 2 sec only up every 5 sec not 210 and with rejuvination applied a w on your adc a plus 10% movement speed away from enemies or plus 86hlth lvl1 almost a pot every 8sec can easily keep your adc alive in a fight during the laning phase. Soraka can turn a fight round in an instant post lvl 6 and getting your toplaner or midlaner first kill giving them lane advantage and allowing them to snowball can be game over for the enemy team. Soraka isn't an easy play, especially as the enemy will try to assassinate you, but definitely the most rewarding support with many hearts, gl on the rift :)
