Lucian's E should always cost him mana, even at level 5

darkdill··35 votes·2,781 views

Latest PBE notes show Lucian's Relentless Pursuit will be costing 40/30/20/10/0 mana instead of 0 at all ranks. Honestly, I think instead it should be 40/35/30/25/20 mana instead.

20 mana isn't a lot, but it still is eating away at the resources you'd use late-game for your other nukes.

I think that if you have a mana bar, every spell you have should cost mana, even if it's just a little bit. Mana management should always be part of playing the champion, so that if you're recklessly using your abilities, you might run out and be unable to use them later when you need them most.

Exactly my point. Lucian's E should never cost 0 mana. Even if 20 mana is low, it's still there.

I disagree with the idea of adcs being managated lategame by a mobility spell of all things. Especially when the managating doesn't actually do anything except help people vent because they don't play aggressive enough teamcomps this season to beat a mobile adc.

Rather than a mechanic that we can pretend will ever create a risk factor outside of bronze I would prefer one that ENCOURAGES risk taking much like ahri's charm or MFs impure shot.

In Lucian's case it would have to be something that keeps him engaged if he wants to deal damage. Graves has the same thing. See his passive

There should be something; honestly, he already gets cooldown reduction with his passive.

Kuroi862 votes

Why? It does next to nothing outside of directly nerfing a champ who really needs almost no tweaking.

darkdill1 votes

Tell that to Lucian's pick/win rate.

Kuroi862 votes

Pick rate simply reflects popularity. Win rate seems steady around 53%, that's not bad. I'm not saying he can't survive having his numbers tweaked some. I'm simply asking why you believe he should be nerfed. Do you think the weak point in his game is not weak enough?

darkdill1 votes

Indeed, Lucian's late-game is not weak enough.

Kuroi862 votes

Mk, in what way? Too much damage? Too mobile? Too safe? Too much survivability? It's one thing to just say you dislike the champ, but if there is really a problem, you need to pin point the problem, either you will learn how to counter said problem, or you will bring awareness to a potential issue that can be addressed.

I personally hate playing against the guy for two different reasons depending on who I am.

If I'm the carry, I hate playing against him because of his insane burst - he can dash up and deal an insane amount of burst damage before I can really react with more than a quick autoattack.

If I'm a support, I hate playing against him because of his free, low-cooldown dash making him able to very easily dodge my skillshots.

To be fair, the two somewhat cancel each other out - if he's dodging skillshots, he can't be dash-bursting.

Quepha2 votes

mana management isn't even a thing by the time lucian maxes his dash.

darkdill3 votes

Even so, it's still better than a 0-mana spam-dash.

I would just like to say that they put mana on his E ONLY for early game. He's fine where he is late game and "spamming skills" is what he's kinda supposed to do because there is something called a passive if some of you never thought about it.

Lucian was just to much of a lane bully for what he ended up being late game so they lowered his potential to get as fed as he typically does. It is very noticeable also because there are a lot less aggressive lucian's because of the fact that they end up spending another 80-120 mana each engage.

Lets just change the game so that all champions have 0 mana costs at 18 then.

the only champs that would really affect are kassadin and kog'maw. I'm just saying you guys are asking for a change that won't really accomplish anything.

Pretty sure you have no fuking clue what you are talking about. I play swain alot for example ask my about my thoughts on no mana costs for swain at level 18.

IMHO it is nothing but a design failure if you implement resources for champions but then arbitrarily chose that some champions it will be meaningless and have zero impact. Great example is miss fortune. Try laning as her and spamming abilties like other adc's do you will have no mana in short order infact the ENTIRE way including level 18 her mana is a relevant issue to manage and conserve. Then you get stupidity like lucien who might as well be manaless as he can spam his stuff with zero thought at all stages of the game.

So ya it is pretty much stupid that his costs GO DOWN as his ability improves and he gets larger and larger mana pools. Meanwhile the next champ like MF has inferior abilties that also have to be rationed in thier use as well.

there is a reason champs like lucien are 100% pick ban while other like mf and varus are 0% pick ban. it is riots retarded balanceteam.

Champs don't have infinite mana at 18, especially if you aren't a mage and you don't build for it. It's completely possible for a champ like Lucian to go OOM at 18. The fact that his E has no cost definitely has an effect regardless of level.

Ramza Paradise2 votes

agree, no real reason for it to be manaless.

The5lacker2 votes

I'd much rather they just not reduce its cooldown by 4 seconds every time he casts it or another one of his abilities then right-clicks on the enemy champion.

That would be like removing the silence on talon and we all know how that played out... That passive is the only passive that will ever fit his kit. No reason to change it.

The5lacker2 votes

Only Lucian's only had that ability for two months as opposed to his entire existence and you can reduce something's power without outright removing an aspect of it.

And the reason to change it is because it makes Lucian easily hyper-mobile and bursty with little to no mana cost and little to no reaction time. That's bad and it's one of the main reasons he's dominating so fully lately.

REALLY??????? I THOUGHT LUCIAN WAS SUPPOSED TO BE TERRIBLE LATE GAME!

No seriously though, just be happy his e now has mana so he cant spam as much. And you have to realize that he is an adc. Most adc's are hyper carry's, well actually just about all of them because, if I'm playing a lucian or an ash, ill dominate late game. That's there job. What you are looking for is to nerf Lucian and end up nerfing all the other adc's so that the role isn't even viable and it's just because you don't feel like dealing with them late game.

The5lacker1 votes

I don't see how that relates to the discussion at all. I was talking about his hyper-mobility due to the rather obscene cooldown reduction capable on his E that grants him insane trading power across all stages of the game, and you're justifying his late game power. While completely ignoring how much it overwhelms his early and mid-game power.

Yes, every ADC is supposed to scale into late game, but lane bullies aren't supposed to scale quite as well as Lucian and Riot kinda went nuts nerfing things that didn't matter and buffing the actual problem areas. Like, for example, removing the mana cost on his escape/harass/jogging tool.

Lucian needs his Q's damage clipped and the scaling flattened to 80% bonus AD across all ranks, and he needs to lose the "functionally 4 second cooldown reduction on an ability with an 8 second cooldown" from his E. Make it reduced by 0.5 seconds on every shot, and double it to 1 second against champions, then have that amount halved for each shot hit from The Culling. Bam. More reward for sustained combat, less stupidly high burst on top of DPS.

Meserion2 votes

Honestly I think it should cost more mana later on, instead of 0. Like maybe 40/45/50/55/60. You having mana issues? Riot made something called item 3508 Essence Reaver specifically with ADCs in mind. Need mana, auto attack gives 2-8% of damage back as mana and its effect in increased if you're below 50% mana. 8% of 300 is 24 mana per attack, his passive procs it ends up being 48 mana from it plus another auto which makes 50; almost enough for another dash.

Zanphyra1 votes

Well. If they make it cost enough mana Essence Reaver might be more common on him. kek

Lucian isnt even good late game. I'd say keep it that way.Ahri

masterdragon4811 votes

I don't really think it is holding him back that much, and I don't think this nerf is actually addressing the part of his kit that is too powerful.

I think the way the passive works needs to be changed slightly.

And what does Tristana get? an overall 7% attack speed reduction ( q taken into consideration). Her q cost no mana.....

People still build attack speed on trist regardless, PD and Shiv are great on her...

LordTobiothan1 votes

when you can put adc and nuke in the same sentence, his mana is hardly my concern on what is messed up about a champ.

Lneacx1 votes

I think that Lucian's E is balanceable around a 0 manacost, as long as it's gated by other means.

Right now, if Lucian wants to E more than once per fight, he needs to reduce its cooldown through Lightslinger procs. And to use Lightslinger, Lucian needs to 1). Consume mana through other spells, and 2). Stay in autoattack range. 1) applies an indirect mana gate, and 2) gates E behind Lucian's crummy auto range.

Right now, is Lucian's E gated properly through these 2 factors? I'm not sure, but I do think that Lucian can be balanced around a 0 manacost on E.

The problem I have with Lucian's dash is after I watched a Diamond friend play him in some highlights... Dude basically Dash+2AA+Dash+2AA+Dash+2AA.

Even with a gap closer you wouldn't catch him and he'd melt you with the double AA's from his passive and the fact he had strong sustain as well. He basically showcased to me how Lucian can win a team fight with only his dash, using no other skills.

Once he started to combo in his other abilities it just wasn't fair. His dash was a free "out play" mechanic that didn't require any skill to pull off. It just gave him additional room to attack with while kiting or chasing. He didn't even need to orbwalk at all late game.

People complain that Trist has a jump (CC immune!) and Vayne has Condemn, but Lucian actually covers MUCH longer distances while still fighting back. Sure it's not an AoE nuke (if you're AP) or a potential stun (if hitting a wall) but it's still 1,000% more utility than either of those abilities. Not to mention it procs his passive every time he does it.
