The fact she has to play as a top lane bruiser just to be relevant in the meta speaks volume of how weak her kit is right now. As someone who played her religiously for two years, I don't like that the only way for her to even be played is something so counter productive to her kit.

The fact that she can be played as a tank and still do massive damage should be an indicator that akali has some very serious balance issues.
she's kinda hard to balance, she's a sustain assassin. They give her too much burst she can't be killed, they remove her sustain and she loses her identity. they could just rework her into more of an ap talon... but he's got issues too.
Akali's kit always stirred up arguments about its balance and its lack of counter play. Tanky or not akali is problematic. Riot knows this and they have her in line for a rework.
I really dislike these "Akali is in a sad state, plz buff Rito" I feel like my response is a copy/paste, so here it is for clarification.
Akali is in this state because she's FUCKING BROKEN AS SHIT WHEN SHES STRONG!!! Back in season 4, she was one of the most frustrating champions to deal with in the game. Sure you can drop a pink Ward to see her in her shroud, but the pink Ward does not help mitigate the metric shit tons of damage that she will deal to you and to add insult to injury it's virtually unavoidable. She has many many many problems in her kit and this is why she is slated for a REWORK. She's in a shitty state because she's BROKEN by design.
Wait patiently for her rework. In the meantime, no I don't want to see any akali buffs and no I don't want to go back to season 4 and get rofl stomped by the ap assassin akali who also turned into a drain tank because of gunblade and her passive.
fiora's a juggernaut...yi's a juggernaut...now akali's a juggernaut... are there any OTHER juggernauts I should know about?
I think it's alright. Seems a little bit like old Shen, though only slightly. It seems like a good change of pace and is mainly to counter multiple ADCs and no front lines. I'd like to try it out sometime.

3+ tank items, still dishes out enough damage to kill anyone 1v1, being an assassin by design

Akali has gotten nothing but buffs for the past year at least... she is being played because she is strong right now; she still works AP too.
She never should have existed... you can't balance a burst assassin with multiple gap closers and no utility. She's either going to suck or be completely unhealthy

Akali by her very nature is toxic, it literally makes Fizz look like the perfect champion ever made in comparasion. Until she is reworked she should be worthless. What fun is there fighting a Sin that even if beaten in lane literally means nothing? I have seen Akali's that were 0/5 in lane hit 6 and get a triple on full hp people, or get lichbane and get a penta, when they were literally garbage.
Not even Katarina which is the Penta Queen can pull that off.
Nothing wrong with having to play a champion differently.
Gragas used to be an AP Mage. Now he's more likely to be found in the jungle building like a tank. I wouldn't say he's in a "sad state" and has to "resort to tanking" now that he's doing well but playing a different role.
the fact that i got 2 kills on akali as aatrox then got 100-0ed in one combo from her says volumes about how i think she is fine
